(1) Background Although HIV has not diminished in importance in Canada, the field of HIV research remains small, and the graduate students who decide to pursue careers within it feel isolated and uncertain about their professional skills and opportunities. Universities Without Walls (UWW) was created in 2009 to help redress these shortcomings. This paper presents a case study of UWW, a non-credit training program for emerging HIV researchers in Canada. In particular, we focus on the possibilities of experiential learning via online and blended delivery. UWW uses both online and in-person teaching modalities to teach engaged scholarship, interdisciplinarity, community-based research (CBR), intervention research, and ethics. (2) Methods Using a case study, we elucidated the research question "What are the factors that make Universities Without Walls a viable training environment in the contemporary HIV/AIDS field?" Focus groups were conducted with 13 UWW key stakeholders in 2012 during a program mid-point evaluapplied ethics-can be learned through a blended delivery when combined with opportunities to apply the knowledge in ways, such as a field mentoring placement and a learning institute. Related to this outcome, our case study describes that implicit curricular components in the formation of a professional-the sense of self in the field as a researcher, student, and community member-can also be delivered through a blended model. However, the tools and activities need to be tailored to each student for their context, while pushing their disciplinarian and professional boundaries.Systemic inflammation alters the composition of exhaled breath, possibly helping clinicians diagnose conditions such as sepsis. We therefore evaluated changes in exhaled breath of rats given tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). Thirty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to three groups (n = 10 each) with intravenous injections of normal saline (control), 200 µg·kg-1 bodyweight TNF-α (TNF-α-200), or 600 µg·kg-1 bodyweight TNF-α (TNF-α-600), and were observed for 24 h or until death. Animals were ventilated with highly-purified synthetic air to analyze exhaled air by multicapillary column-ion mobility spectrometry. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were identified from a database. We recorded blood pressure and cardiac output, along with cytokine plasma concentrations. Control rats survived the 24 h observation period, whereas mean survival time decreased to 22 h for TNF-α-200 and 23 h for TNF-α-600 rats. Mean arterial pressure decreased in TNF-α groups, whereas IL-6 increased, consistent with mild to moderate inflammation. Hundreds of VOCs were detected in exhalome. P-cymol increased by a factor-of-two 4 h after injection of TNF-α-600 compared to the control and TNF-α-200. We found that 1-butanol and 1-pentanol increased in both TNF-α groups after 20 h compared to the control. As breath analysis distinguishes between two doses of TNF-α and none, we conclude that it might help clinicians identify systemic inflammation.Businesses in urban areas have been required to accommodate stranded persons as temporary evacuation facilities during disasters. Regarding measures aimed at aiding stranded persons, aspects such as trust and the image of the business need to be considered. Therefore, in this study, a personnel training course was developed to smoothly take in stranded persons, and the outcomes of this training were evaluated by quizzes, entry sheets, and a questionnaire. This was a two-day and one-night course characterized by the use of role-play in which 20 participants experienced the series of processes that unfold during disasters, playing either the role of a stranded person or a facility member. This training included emergency food provision using real stockpiled food and accommodation training using actual bedding stored in a model facility. After the review, when the participants were taught the correct response for vulnerable people, their scores in the test regarding the points of caution in vulnerable people were significantly higher than those prior to the course, confirming that participants had acquired knowledge as a result. Furthermore, through training using real food and accommodation, the participants were able to understand victims' requirements by experiencing the need for satisfactory emergency rations and comfortable bedding.Computer vision-based approaches are very useful for dynamic displacement measurement, damage detection, and structural health monitoring. However, for the application using a large number of existing cameras in buildings, the computational cost of videos from dozens of cameras using a centralized computer becomes a huge burden. Moreover, when a manual process is required for processing the videos, prompt safety assessment of tens of thousands of buildings after a catastrophic earthquake striking a megacity becomes very challenging. Thiazovivin cell line Therefore, a decentralized and fully automatic computer vision-based approach for prompt building safety assessment and decision-making is desired for practical applications. In this study, a prototype of a novel stand-alone smart camera system for measuring interstory drifts was developed. The proposed system is composed of a single camera, a single-board computer, and two accelerometers with a microcontroller unit. The system is capable of compensating for rotational effects of he proposed smart camera system through the use of large-scale shaking table tests of a steel building. The results show that the proposed smart camera system had very promising results in terms of assessing the safety of steel building specimens after earthquake excitations. The biggest obstacle for the application of tungsten as the target materials in the spallation neutron source is its serious corrosion in the coolant of flowing water. For this reason, W-Cr-C clad tungsten was developed by tungsten carburizing in a spark plasma sintering device, with superior corrosion resistance in the static immersion and electrochemical corrosion test. This work focused on its erosion and corrosion performance in a flowing water system, based upon test parameters simulated under the service conditions. W-Cr-C clad tungsten showed superior corrosion resistance to that of bare tungsten due to the corrosion form changing from the intergranular corrosion of bare tungsten to pitting corrosion of W-Cr-C coating. The corrosion rate of tungsten was as high as tenfold that of the coated sample at 20 °C, and at most fourfold at 60 °C after testing for 360 h. Effects of water velocity and temperature on pitting and intergranular corrosion were investigated in detail and their corresponding corrosion mechanisms were analyzed and discussed.
