[Dementia: keeping track of nostrils stays a challenge].
Pure-water filtration membranes are often fouled by bacterial biofilms. Antibacterial coatings for preventing biofilm formation on such membranes should not rely on leaching of inhibiting compounds but should only be effective on surface contact. Certified assays for antibacterial coatings do not sufficiently exclude leaching effects and involve nutrient-rich cultivation media that do not correspond to conditions in pure-water systems. In this study, a two-step bioluminescence assay was developed for optimizing an antibacterial coating of PES/PVP ultrafiltration hollow-fiber membranes with a polydopamine as a sustainable, bio-inspired material for preventing bacterial biofilm formation. In the first step, leaching of the antimicrobial coating was analyzed by a bioluminescence assay with supernatants generated by washing coated membranes. In the second step, bioluminescence of bacterial biofilms on coated and uncoated membranes was measured using a nutrient-poor medium resembling site-specific conditions. Based on this bioluminescence assay, an optimized protocol for the coating process could be established by acidic polymerization of dopamine using 2 g/L sodium periodate and 4 g/L dopamine at 40 °C for 20 min reaction time. With coatings produced in this way, bioluminescence was reduced on coated membranes only while the corresponding supernatants exhibited no inhibitory effects.Knowledge on diseases caused by Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) has greatly increased in last decades after their etiology was demonstrated in the past seventies. Professor Ricardo Flores substantially contributed to these advances in topics like i) improvement of virus purification to obtain biologically active virions, ii) sequencing mild CTV isolates for genetic comparisons with sequences of moderate or severe isolates and genetic engineering, iii) analysis of genetic variation of both CTV genomic RNA ends and features of the highly variable 5' end that allow accommodating this variation within a conserved secondary structure, iv) studies on the structure, subcellular localization and biological functions of the CTV-unique p23 protein, and v) potential use of p23 and other 3'-proximal regions of the CTV genome to develop transgenic citrus resistant to the virus. Here we review his main achievements on these topics and how they contributed to deeper understanding of CTV biology and to new potential measures for disease control.Graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) have been applied in the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process for nitrogen removal as electron shuttles. However, there is still controversy about their efficacy. In this study, nine graphene-based materials with a gradient of three particle sizes (large (l), medium (m) and small (s) sizes) and oxidation degrees, were used to compare their effects on the anammox process efficiency. The graphene-based materials include GO and its reduced products (RGO250 and RGO800) obtained at temperatures of 250 °C and 800 °C respectively. It was observed that their enhancements on the anammox process were in the order of GO > RGO800 > RGO250. In detail, at the dose of 100 mg/L, specific anammox activities (SAA) were promoted by 6.7% (l-GO), 4.9% (l-RGO800), 11.5% (m-GO), 7.3% (m-RGO800), 13.2% (s-GO) and 8.3% (s-RGO800) compared to the control respectively; while RGO250 with the same dose inhibited the process. In addition, the enhancement of the anammox process was increasing with the decreasing size of GO and RGO800. The nitrite reductase (NIR) activity was greatly increased by up to 24.9% with the presence of GO, which might be attributed to organized and specific electron transport with oxygen functional groups. The finding of hydroxyl on RGO and increasing content of oxygen determined after reaction detected by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and energy dispersive spectrometer respectively, indicated the essential condition for RGO's function on transferring electrons for key enzymes in annamox bacteria. Most importantly, O/C (Oxygen/Carbon) ratios of graphene-based materials had greater effects on the promotion of the anammox process than the particle size and electrical conductivity. The metal catalysts X-Mo@MgO (X = Ni, Fe, Co) was studied as excellent catalyst for catalytic pyrolysis conversion of biomass and plastics into functional carbon nanocomposite. The proper reaction mechanism of the process was explored through the gas composition, and explored the bactericidal performance of functional carbon nanocomposite. The results showed that the Ni, Fe and Co-based catalysts elevated H2 gas yield reached to 57%, 34% and 44% as the addition of Mo, due to Mo or its oxide species for scission of small molecule compound. The introduction of NiMo@MgO catalyst produced lower CH4, and higher H2 and MWCNTs, which indicated that the formation of MWCNTs is mainly attributed to CH4 dehydrogenation. As a comparison, FeMo@MgO catalyst for CO disproportionation reaction could generate more MWCNTs and lower H2. The functional carbon nanocomposite from FeMo@MgO catalyst were comprehensively evaluated by multiple characterizations. TPO and Raman results confirmed that FeMo@MgO catalyst can provide an excellent carrier to generate MWCNTs with few defects and high graphitization. The functional carbon nanocomposite were initially applied to E.coli extinguishing. The core-shell structure catalyst not only has excellent bactericidal performance, but also has strong resistance to metal leaching.
When the COVID-19 case number reaches a maximum in a country, its capacity and management of health system face greatest challenge.

We performed a cross-sectional study on data of turning points for cases and deaths for the first three waves of COVID-19 in countries with more than 5000 cumulative cases, as reported by Worldometers and WHO Coronavirus (COVID-19) Dashboard. We compared the case fatality rates (CFRs) and time lags (in unit of day) between the turning points of cases and deaths among countries in different development stages and potential influence factors. As of May 10, 2021, 106 out of 222 countries or regions (56%) reported more than 5000 cases. Approximately half of them have experienced all the three waves of COVID-19 disease. The average mortality rate at the disease turning point was 0.038 for the first wave, 0.020 for the second wave, and 0.023 for wave 3. In high-income countries, the mortality rates during the first wave are higher than that of the other income levels. However, the likely to become even worse in the light of these countries' limited ability to combat COVID-19 and prevent severe outcomes or deaths as the new variant transmission becomes dominant.
Economy and medical resources affect the efficiency of COVID-19 mitigation and the clinical outcomes of the patients. The situation is likely to become even worse in the light of these countries' limited ability to combat COVID-19 and prevent severe outcomes or deaths as the new variant transmission becomes dominant.Although applications of the integrated ultrafiltration (UF) membrane have been investigated for years, most studies have been conducted at the lab scale. Here, a case study on the integrated Fe-based floc-UF process was presented. To enhance membrane performance, both pre-filtration (bag filter) and pre-oxidation were used as pretreatments to remove particles and inhibit the development of microorganisms. Results showed that the integrated process operated stably with pre-treatments, and the UF membrane fouling behavior could be divided into three different phases slow increase rate (phase I), medium increase rate (phase II), and fast increase rate (phase III). In comparison to those in phases II and III, both natural organic matters and colloids were the main membrane fouling mechanisms during phase I, as the pollutants were not successfully removed by flocs initially. With the continuous injection of flocs, a loose cake layer became the main fouling mechanism during phase II, resulting in the deterioration of membrane fouling. During phase III, however, microorganisms (e.g., Proteobacteria) were inevitably nourished within the cake layer and played an important role in aggravating the degree of membrane fouling. During this integrated membrane-based process, several operating factors, including floc concentration, sludge discharge frequency, and the aeration rate during backwashing, played important roles in determining membrane performance. In addition, except for oxygen consumption, all the effluent quality parameters met the drinking water criteria followed in China (GB5749-2006).Under the background of indoor air formaldehyde decontamination, a freestanding ultra-light assembly was fabricated via ice-templating approach starting from MnO2 nanoparticles and environmentally benign agar powder. selleck chemicals The 3D composite of agar and MnO2 (AM-3D) was comparatively studied with powdered counterparts (including pure MnO2 and mixture of agar and MnO2) and the 3D-structured agar for formaldehyde oxidation, and their physicochemical properties were examined with XRD, ATR, SEM, XPS, isothermal N2 adsorption, ESR, Raman, CO-TPR and O2-TPD. For the single test of formaldehyde oxidation, the AM-3D catalyst exhibited 62.0%-67.0% removal percentage for ~400 mg/m3 formaldehyde, which did not demonstrate significant advantage over the control samples. However, thanks to the porous 3D agar scaffold with large spatial volume that could promote a rapid gas-phase formaldehyde concentration reduction, and the strong interaction between the dispersed MnO2 particles and agar substrate that could afford a large amount of reactive oxygen species to further oxidize the adsorbed formaldehyde, the AM-3D composite was a much better HCHO-to-CO2 converter and possessed much more advantageous stability for repeated cycles of formaldehyde oxidation even after ten cycles, there was still 41.7% of formaldehyde removed. Furthermore, the viable sunlight irradiation could easily restore the activity of the used AM-3D catalyst back to the level approaching that of the fresh one. Finally, reaction pathways were put forward via the infrared spectroscopic and ion chromatographic investigations on the surface intermediates of the spent materials.Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are organic chemicals that can persist in the environment for a longer period due to their non-biodegradability. The pervasive and bio-accumulative behavior of POPs makes them highly toxic to the environmental species including plants, animals, and humans. The present review specifies the POP along with their fate, persistence, occurrence, and risk analysis towards humans. The different biological POPs degradation methods, especially the microbial degradation using bacteria, fungi, algae, and actinomycetes, and their mechanisms were described. Moreover, the source, transport of POPs to the environmental sources, and the toxic nature of POPs were discussed in detail. Agricultural and industrial activities are distinguished as the primary source of these toxic compounds, which are delivered to air, soil, and water, affecting on the social and economic advancement of society at a worldwide scale. This review also demonstrated the microbial degradation of POPs and outlines the potential for an eco-accommodating and cost-effective approach for the biological remediation of POPs using microbes.
