patient-centred care has become a rallying call for improving quality and access to care in countries where health system responsiveness and satisfaction with health services remain low. Understanding patient-provider interactions is important to guide implementation of an effective patient-centred care approach in sub-Saharan Africa. This review aims to overcome this knowledge gap by synthesizing the evidence on patient-provider interactions in sub-Saharan Africa.

we conducted a scoping review using Arksey and O´Malley´s framework. We searched in eight databases and the grey literature. We conducted a thematic analysis using an inductive approach to assess the studies.

of the 80 references identified through database searching, nine met the inclusion criteria. Poor communication and several types of mistreatment (service denial, oppressive language, harsh words and rough examination) characterize patient-provider interactions in sub-Saharan Africa. Nevertheless, some health providers offer support to p training, mentorship and regular supportive supervision of health providers to provide patient-centred care. Patients should be empowered in care processes.
Household Contacts (HHCs) of Pulmonary Tuberculosis (PTB) patients have a higher risk of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). However, its prevalence and risk factors among adults living with PTB patients are poorly documented in Kenya.

to determine the prevalence and risk factors for LTBI among adult HHCs of PTB patients in Kenya.

this was an analytical cross-sectional study of HHCs of PTB patients in Nairobi, Kenya. Socio-demographic data was captured on questionnaires and blood samples drawn for Interferon gamma (IFN-γ) quantification. Univariate and multivariate analyses using the Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) was used to determine the prevalence of LTBI and risk factors at 95% Confidence Interval (CI).

a total of 166 PTB patients yielded 175 HHCs of whom 29.7% (52/125) were males and 70.3% (123/125) were females. A majority of HHCs [65.7% (115/175)] lived in a single-room house with the patient and [37.7% (66/175)] were in the age group 30-39-years. The overall prevalence of LTBI was 55.7%, peaking among spouses of the patients [70.0% (14/20) and the 30-39 year age group [63.5% (42/66)]. Potential risk factors for LTBI included cohabiting with a PTB patient for 8 to 12 weeks [OR = 3.6 (0.70-18.5), p = 0.107], being a spouse of the patient [OR = 2.0 (0.72-5.47), p = 0.173] and sharing a single room with the patient [OR = 1.58 (0.84 - 2.97), p = 0.158].

the high prevalence of LTBI among adult HHCs of PTB patients in this population demonstrates the need for targeted contact-screening programs in high TB transmission settings.

asthma is a chronic inflammatory and a heterogeneous condition of respiratory system whose pathogenesis is linked with variable structural changes. The clinical manifestation of asthma includes attacks of breathlessness, cough, chest tightness and wheezing. Provision of basic equipment and test for asthma diagnosis and access to essential medicines by asthmatic patients reduces morbidity and mortality rates. Significant progress has been made in the diagnosis and management of asthma in other countries but not in the health care delivery system in Zimbabwe. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop algorithm for asthma diagnosis and management for Zimbabwe.

a two stage Delphi model was used to collect data in order to develop an algorithm of asthma diagnosis and management. A baseline interview with 44 doctors was done to understand their experiences and knowledge regarding asthma diagnosis and management. We collected data using the KoBo Collect Toolbox installed on Android mobile phone and transfee workshop and later refined by the core-research team. The final algorithm described in this paper was circulated for further contributions and endorsement by the asthma experts.

we established the need for doctors to receive constant refresher courses on asthma diagnosis for upskilling. We recommend adoption by the Zimbabwe's Ministry of Health and Child Care of the asthma diagnostic algorithm we developed.

Spontaneous bilateral quadriceps tendon rupture is a rarer injury, however, can be debilitating. Patients with such injuries usually present with history of minor trauma, swelling and inability to actively extend the knee. Its occurrence secondary to minor trauma is mostly associated with chronic diseases and long-term use of certain medications. Occurrence of simultaneous bilateral quadriceps tendon rupture in the absence of trauma in a healthy patient with no known medical condition is yet to be reported and therefore requires a high index of suspicion for early diagnosis and effective management to avoid complications. The aim of this case report is to create awareness of the spontaneous occurrence of this injury in the absence of the reported risk factors. We report the unusual case of a 60-year old healthy man who presented with a spontaneous simultaneous bilateral quadriceps' tendon rupture in the absence of trauma and no medical risk factors. We report the unusual case of a 60-year old healthy man who presented with a spontaneous simultaneous bilateral quadriceps tendon rupture in the absence of trauma and no medical risk factors. Consent was taken from him to be used as a case report being a rare case. The man had full recovery after surgery and physiotherapy and was discharged home. Spontaneous bilateral quadriceps tendon rupture is a rare occurrence. The index case report is important as there was no history of trauma and it was bilateral.
few studies have been conducted to evaluate pharmacists´ knowledge and practice of the asthma guidelines. The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) report was developed to reduce practice variability and to improve the quality of asthma care. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and practice of the GINA report among community pharmacists in a Nigerian State.

this cross-sectional survey was conducted among community pharmacists in Enugu State, Nigeria (May to July, 2018). Data were collected with a 39-item structured self-administered questionnaire and analyzed using the IBM SPSS Version 21.0. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize data. Inferential statistics utilized the Pearson Chi-Square test where applicable, with statistical significance set at P < 0.05.

a total of 89 community pharmacists in Enugu State participated in the study (76.7% participation rate). More than half of them were less than 40 years old (60.7%), male (59.6%) and only had the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) degree (83.1%). About a tenth of the community pharmacists (10.1%) reported that they stock the peak flow meter. Few of them (2.2%) utilized the Asthma Control Test™ in their practice. After categorization, less than half of the community pharmacists had good knowledge of asthma (34.8%) and demonstrated good practice of the GINA report (11.2%).

the community pharmacists had poor knowledge of asthma and demonstrated poor practice of the GINA report. With adequate knowledge of the guidelines, community pharmacists can assist patients with making informed decisions and proffer appropriate recommendations to physicians.

In June, 2016, an outbreak of snakebites in Donga Local Government Area, Taraba State, north-east Nigeria, was reported. EGF816 purchase We investigated the outbreak to identify risk factors for snakebites and to institute appropriate control measures. We conducted an unmatched case control study to identify risk factors for snakebite in the communities involved. We conducted key informant interviews and Focus Group Discussions with stakeholders in the communities to obtain information on the community´s perspective of the outbreak. There were Sixty-one (61) snakebite cases with Fifteen (15) deaths [CFR 24.6%]. Majority of the mortalities [37(60.3%)] were males. Median age was 27 years (Range 5-58). Kadarko ward had the highest [26 (42.6%)] number of cases. Most snakebites 12 (44.4%) occurred in the farm, 27 (96.4%) vipers Echis spp were responsible for most of the bite and most [26 (92.9%)] victims sought care from traditional healers. Residing in Kadarko ward and having a history of snakebite in the past were risk factors [Odds ratio of 2.9 (95% CI 1.1-7.4) and 5.9 (95% CI 1.1-32.5)] respectively. Abandonment of homes for two years due to communal clashes has been thought to have allowed snake populations to grow. The snakebite outbreak in Donga, Taraba State affected predominantly male farmers in the rural wards. Residing in Kadarko ward and having a previous history of snakebite were risk factors.
the prevailing high maternal mortality and morbidity rate among pregnant adolescents in Nigeria underscores all efforts said to have been made to tackle maternal deaths among this population. Not much research has been done to ascertain the reasons associated with the poor utilisation of Maternal Health Services (MHS) by pregnant teenagers. This study, therefore, explored the extent and determinants of MHS utilisation among pregnant teenagers in Delta State.

this study made use of a mixed cross-sectional study design. Multi-stage sampling technique was adopted in selecting eight communities while snowballing was used in identifying pregnant teenagers. A structured interviewer-administered questionnaire was used for the data collection from 212 pregnant teenagers and an interview guide was further used to interview 16 pregnant teenagers randomly selected from the communities. Descriptive and inferential data analyses were done using SPSS version 22. Hypotheses were tested using Chi-square test at P≤0.05 leicant others and cost of MHS.
the level of utilisation of MHS by pregnant teenagers is low with main determinants of use being stigmatisation of pregnant teenagers, availability of health personnel, accessibility to MHS facilities, permission from significant others and cost of MHS.Parotid gland tumor is complex and poses diagnostic and therapeutic problems. The purpose of this study was to assess the role of extemporaneous examination in the management of patients with parotid gland tumors. We report a pro and retrospective analytical study of a series of cases of salivary gland tumors, whose data were collected in the ENT and in the department of cervical-facial Surgery at the University Hospital in Casablanca, between January 2012 and December 2015. Seventy two cases of parotid tumors were recorded. The sex-ratio (H/F) was 0.94, 0.76 for patients with benign tumors and 1.62 for patients with malignant tumors. The average age was 47 years (15- 75 years). The median of consultation time was 40 months. Clinical symptoms were dominated by parotid swelling (100%), pain in 25% of patients, facial palsy in 6%, and cervical adenopathies in 10%. Ultrasound was recommended in 80% of patients. MRI was performed in 26% of cases. All patients underwent surgery, 76% of patients underwent exofacial parotidectomies and 24% total conservative parotidectomies.
