The present study revealed that cyanobacteria isolated from Sri Lanka are potential source for biodiesel industry because of their high fatty acid content. Further studies are required to optimize the mass culture conditions to increase thelipid content from cyanobacterial biomass along with the research in the value addition to the remaining biomass.Due to antimicrobial resistance and the public health hazard of antibiotic growth promoters, there is a grave need to find potential alternatives for sustainable poultry production. Piper betle (PB) and Persicaria odorata (PO) are herbs, which have been reported for antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. The present study aimed to estimate the influence of different dose supplementation of Piper betle leaf meal (PBLM) and Persicaria odorata leaf meal (POLM) on growth performance, ileal digestibility and gut morphology of broilers chickens. A total of 210 one day-old broiler chicks were randomly grouped into 7 treatments, and each treatment group has 3 replicates (n = 10) with a total number of 30 chicks. The treatments included T1 control (basal diet (BD) with no supplementation), T2 (BD + 2 g/kg PBLM); T3 (BD + 4 g/kg PBLM), T4 (BD + 8 g/kg PBLM), T5 (BD + 2 g/kg POLM), T6 (BD + 4 g/kg POLM), T7 (BD + 8 g/kg POLM). Growth performance, gut morphology and ileal digestibility were measurey weight gain, thus improved the growth performance of broiler chickens.Celiac disease (CD) is a gastrointestinal disorder whose genetic basis is not fully understood. Therefore, we studied a Saudi family with two CD affected siblings to discover the causal genetic defect. Through whole exome sequencing (WES), we identified that both siblings have inherited an extremely rare and deleterious CPED1 genetic variant (c.241 A > G; p.Thr81Ala) segregating as autosomal recessive mutation, suggesting its putative causal role in the CD. Saudi population specific minor allele frequency (MAF) analysis has confirmed its extremely rare prevalence in homozygous condition (MAF is 0.0004). The Sanger sequencing analysis confirmed the absence of this homozygous variant in 100 sporadic Saudi CD cases. Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) data has revealed that CPED1 is abundantly expressed in gastrointestinal mucosa. By using a combination of systems biology approaches like protein 3D modeling, stability analysis and nucleotide sequence conservation analysis, we have further established that this variant is deleterious to the structural and functional aspects of CPED1 protein. To the best of our knowledge, this variant has not been previously reported in CD or any other gastrointestinal disease. The cell culture and animal model studies could provide further insight into the exact role of CPED1 p.Thr81Ala variant in the pathophysiology of CD. In conclusion, by using WES and systems biology analysis, present study for the first-time reports CPED1 as a potential causative gene for CD in a Saudi family with potential implications to both disease diagnosis and genetic counseling.Pathological angiogenesis characterized by uncontrollable vessel growth is an accompanying feature of many diseases. The avian embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) is an excellent model for angiogenesis research. In our study we used a less common Japanese quail CAM model for the testing of angiogenic potential of leptin, high-molecular (heparin sodium) andlow-molecular (nadroparin calcium) heparins. Heparins play a significant role in vascular endothelial cell function, and they are able to modulate the activities of angiogenic growth factors. On embryonic day 7 leptin (5 μg per CAM), heparin sodium (75 IU per CAM) and nadroparin calcium (47.5 IU per CAM) in 500 μl PBS were applied on the CAM surface. After 24 h the fractal dimension (Df) of the vasculature was evaluated. Samples from each group were histologically analyzed and VEGF-A and Quek1 expression were detected by qPCR. Df was significantly increased in the leptin group. A moderate stimulatory effect of heparin sodium and an inhibitory effect of nadroparin calcium were observed. Both leptin and heparin sodium caused a noticeable increase in the CAM thickness compared to the control and nadroparin calcium groups. We observed an increased number of blood vessels and accumulation of fibroblasts. There was no significant impact on gene expression of VEGF-A and Quek1 24 h after treatment, however, trends similar to the changes in Df and CAM thickness were present. The resulting effect of nadroparin administration on Quek1 levels was exactly the opposite to that of leptin (p less then 0.05).Saprolegnosis of fresh water fishes caused by Saprolegnia diclina often results in serious economic losses to fish hatcheries. Despite the proven efficiency of malachite green as a potential fungicide in prevention and control of fish saprolegnosis, there is a strong debate about its safety aspects in use since it was documented to be responsible for many carcinogenic and teratogenic attributes. Bioactivity of four ethanolic plant extracts were assessed to attain a natural alternative to the traditional fungicide currently used in saprolegnosis control. Ethanolic extracts of Punica granatum and Thymus vulgaris exhibited a potential efficacy in suppressing mycelial growth of S. diclina at concentration of 0.5 mg/ml while extracts of Nigella sativa and Zingiber officinales were not effective respectively. The extract of pomegranate showed the highest antifungal potency with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 200 ppm while thyme extract was less effective and recorded MIC of 400 ppm against S. diclina. The acute fish toxicity of the plant extracts indicated the low toxicity of P. granatum and T. vulgaris extracts as no fish mortalities were detected at aquaria containing 200, 400 and 800 ppm of plant extracts respectively. Considering the low toxicity of these plant extracts, it may be concluded that 200 and 400 ppm of pomegranate and thyme extracts which suppressed the mycelial growth of the S. diclina could be safely used for saprolegniasis control. Both of pomegranate and thyme extracts which proved to possess a potential antifungal activity can be considered as a natural alternative fungicides to control saprolegniasis avoiding carcinogenic malachite green application.Various metabolites exist in the medicinal plants have lot of potential to cure various diseases and disorders. Plants such as, Vetiveria zizanioides, Trichosanthes cucumerina, and Mollugo cerviana were collected from Western Ghats, Tamilnadu, India. Phytochemicals were extracted from these plants using various organic solvents and tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The phytochemicals such as, carbohydrate, alkaloids, steroids, saponins, flavonoids and tannin were detected from these medicinal plants. Among the extracts, methanol showed potent activity and this solvent was used to extract polyherbal medicinal plants. Methanol extract of V. zizanioides was found to be highly active against E. coli (27 ± 2 mm), P. mirabilis (19 ± 3 mm) and B. subtilis (18 ± 2 mm). Ethyl acetate extract showed high activity against E. coli (24 ± 2 mm), P. mirabilis (22 ± 3 mm) and B. subtilis (20 ± 1 mm). These three plants were taken at 111 ratio and extracted with methanol at 110 ratio and synergistic actyherbal extract. The methanol extract of polyherbal fraction showed cytotoxicity against these two cell lines. The LC50 value was 467 ± 2.9 µg/ml against HeLa cell line and >800 µg/ml against MCF-7 cell lines. The polyherbal extract showed antibacterial, antioxidant and anticancer activities.The use of synthetic antioxidants has been associated with serious concerns for human and environmental health. During ripening stages, tomato fruit is exposed to different abiotic stresses which not only influence its nutritional, mechanical, and functional properties at harvest, but also affect the quality and shelf life of the fruit during storage. This study investigated the pattern of changes in dietary antioxidants during various ripening stages of tomato fruit (cv. Red Rose) and their impact on storage behavior of the fruit during cold storage. Tomato fruits were harvested at mature green, breaker, turning, pink, light-red and red stages of maturity. Then, they were analysed for flesh firmness, soluble solids content, titratable acidity, total sugars, pH, dry matter content, lipophilic (lycopene, β-carotene, and total carotenoids), and hydrophilic (ascorbic acid, phenolic and flavonoids) antioxidants. Additional fruits were harvested at each maturity stage and divided into three equal lots, then were subjected to low-temperature (10 ± 1 °C) storage with 80 ± 5% RH, for 7, 14, and 21 days. Flesh firmness, and the levels of dietary antioxidants were analysed following the subsequent storage periods. The results revealed that the peak of hydrophilic antioxidants such as ascorbic acid, phenolic compounds, and flavonoids was between the 'pink' and the 'light-red' stages of fruit maturity. Whereas tomatoes harvested at the 'red' stage of maturity had the highest levels of lycopene and β-carotene. Both the stage of fruit maturity at harvest and duration of cold storage influenced flesh firmness, organoleptic and functional properties of 'Red Rose' tomato fruit. In conclusion, the results of the current investigation have practical implications in formulating foods with improved functional properties at processing industries.In situations of restricted food supply, the trophic niches of closely-related species of animals should be separate. For sit-and-wait hunters, such as shrikes, this is associated with competition for food and hunting sites. In the present study, the foraging behaviour of two shrike species - Red-tailed Shrike Lanius phoenicuroides and Red-backed Shrike Lanius collurio - was studied in a desert habitat in Oman. The fieldwork was carried out in September 2019, during the peak migration of these birds. Their behaviour was recorded in detail during 30-minute observation bouts. A General Linear Mixed Model with logit link function and binomial error variance was used to compare their behaviour. The type of perch and its height did not differ between them, but there were significant differences in their use of look-out posts only in the mean duration of a single perching event, which was more than twice as long in Red-backed Shrike. No differences in prey size were found between the species and hunting success (the ratio of successful attacks to all attacks) was similar in both (RtS-RbS 46 vs. 61%). click here Dietary diversity was twice as great in Red-tailed Shrike as in Red-backed Shrike, but in general, their diets did not differ very much. Dietary overlap between the species at this level of prey identification was 92%. This absence of differences in some aspects of behaviour and diet may be due to the similarity of the two species, above all their same body size, and even the possibility of hybridization. If the species compared are so similar due to body size, behaviour and evolutionary relationship their food niches may overlap.In this study, the 1H HRMAS-NMR (High-resolution Magic Angle Spinning-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spectra of 52 cheese samples obtained from the South Korean dairy farms were evaluated for their metabolic profiling and intensities associating with the sensory qualities. The NMR profiles displayed a broad range of compounds comprising amino acids, carbohydrates, organic acids, and phospholipids. Afterwards, the cheese samples were categorized into three groups (more likeness - G1, moderate likeness - G2, less likeness - G3), in relating to their sensory scores. The NMR data of the samples were later investigated through multivariate statistical tools to define the variations in metabolic fingerprints of every cheese sample and their intensities hailing in individual sensory groups. The unsupervised PCA employing all cheese samples unveiled the uniqueness in metabolite profiles of the brown and cheddar type cheeses (outliers). Moreover, Gouda and other types of cheeses displayed samples positioning in respective of their metabolite profiles.
