e., on data produced by different acquisition devices and without model fine tuning, as shown from the very encouraging performance evaluations that dramatically reach and overcome the 90% value on the AuROC and balanced accuracy metrics.Glioma segmentation is an essential step in tumor identification and treatment planning. Glioma segmentation is a challenging task because it appears with blurred and irregular boundaries in a variety of shapes. In this paper, we propose an efficient and novel model for automatic glioma segmentation based on capsule neural networks. We improved the architecture and training of the SegCaps model, the first capsule-based segmentation network. The proposed architecture is improved by introducing dilation blocks in the primary capsule block to get deeper features while avoiding resolution reduction. The prediction layer of the network is also modified using one-dimensional convolution filters, enabling the network to not only maximize tumor existence likelihood but also regularize the capsule orientations within the tumor. Our main contribution, however, is to introduce an enhanced curriculum-based training algorithm into the proposed SegCaps model. We adapt the curriculum learning for the model by suggesting a new pacing mechanism based on a roulette-wheel selection algorithm that enriches randomness in the network and prevents bias. A hybrid dice loss function is also employed, which is better adapted to the introduced curriculum-based training procedure. We evaluated the performance of improved SegCaps on the BraTS2020, a multimodal benchmark dataset for brain tumor segmentation. The experimental results confirmed that the improvements yield a top-performing yet memory-efficient deep capsule architecture. The proposed model outperformed the best-reported accuracies on the BraTS2020, achieving improved dice scores of 85.16% and 81.88% for tumor core and enhancing tumor segmentation, respectively. Using 90%, fewer parameters than the popular U-Net also confirmed the high memory efficiency of our proposed model.Pneumothorax is a potentially life-threatening condition that can be rapidly and accurately assessed via the lung sliding artefact generated using lung ultrasound (LUS). Access to LUS is challenged by user dependence and shortage of training. Image classification using deep learning methods can automate interpretation in LUS and has not been thoroughly studied for lung sliding. Using a labelled LUS dataset from 2 academic hospitals, clinical B-mode (also known as brightness or two-dimensional mode) videos featuring both presence and absence of lung sliding were transformed into motion (M) mode images. These images were subsequently used to train a deep neural network binary classifier that was evaluated using a holdout set comprising 15% of the total data. Grad-CAM explanations were examined. Our binary classifier using the EfficientNetB0 architecture was trained using 2535 LUS clips from 614 patients. When evaluated on a test set of data uninvolved in training (540 clips from 124 patients), the model performed with a sensitivity of 93.5%, specificity of 87.3% and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.973. Grad-CAM explanations confirmed the model's focus on relevant regions on M-mode images. Our solution accurately distinguishes between the presence and absence of lung sliding artefacts on LUS.
Thyroid disease instances have been continuously increasing since the 1990s, and thyroid cancer has become the most rapidly rising disease among all the malignancies in recent years. Most existing studies focused on applying deep convolutional neural networks for detecting thyroid cancer. Despite their satisfactory performance on binary classification tasks, limited studies have explored multi-class classification of thyroid disease types; much less is known of the diagnosis of co-existence situation for different types of thyroid diseases.
This study proposed a novel multi-channel convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture to address the multi-class classification task of thyroid disease. The multi-channel CNN merits from computed tomography characteristics to drive a comprehensive diagnostic decision for the overall thyroid gland, emphasizing the disease co-existence circumstance. Moreover, this study also examined alternative strategies to enhance the diagnostic accuracy of CNN models through conco be deployed to provide computational decision support in clinical settings.African swine fever (ASF) has been present in Estonia since 2014, and pigkeepers play a major role in controlling the spread of viral infection in domestic pigs. Participatory epidemiology may provide insight into livestock keepers' existing attitudes and compliance with implementing control strategies. By conducting focus group discussions and using participatory epidemiology tools, this study aimed to reveal pigkeepers' knowledge and awareness of ASF clinical signs, transmission routes, and preventive measures. Furthermore, opinions including trust in stakeholders in ASF control, acceptability of ASF eradication, and control measures by pigkeepers in Estonia were identified. The most indicative ASF signs in pigs were "increased mortality" and "fever, inappetence, lethargy". The highest risk of virus introduction into the herd was designated to "agricultural machinery, vehicles", "rodents, birds, insects", and "people". "Fencing" was the most liked ASF preventive measure, while "training of staff in biosecurt transmission routes of the virus for their farms, and preventive measures for ASF. Pigkeepers are aware of their own role in preventing ASF, and there is a high level of trust between them and government authorities. Additional efforts are needed from authorities to communicate better the purpose of some ASF control and eradication measures to the pigkeepers. Further incentives are required to support the implementation of costly biosecurity measures, assure compliance, and mitigate the consequences of these measures.
Severe inflammation of the lungs results from acute lung injury (ALI), a common life-threatening lung disease with a high mortality rate. The ligand-activated transcription factor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) γ plays essential roles in diverse biological processes including inflammation, metabolism, development, and immune response. Salvianolactone acid A (SA) is a terpenoid derived from the herb Salvia miltiorrhiza. However, there is a scarcity of experimental evidence indicating whether the effect of SA on ALI occurs via PPAR-γ.
SA (20 or 40 mg/kg, i.g., 1 time/day) was administered to mice for 3 d, followed by the induction of ALI by intranasal lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 10 mg/kg). The lung function and levels of inflammation, reactive oxygen species (ROS), immune cells, apoptosis, and PPAR-γ were examined. The antagonistic activity of GW9662 (GW, 1 µM, specific PPAR-γ blocker) and PPAR-γ transfection silencing against SA (10 μM) in BEAS-2B cells induced by LPS (10 μg/ml, 24 h) was atially mediated through PPAR-γ signaling. These data provide the molecular justification for the usage of SA in treating ALI and can assist in increasing the comprehensive utilization rate of Salvia miltiorrhiza.
The anti-ALI effects of SA were partially mediated through PPAR-γ signaling. These data provide the molecular justification for the usage of SA in treating ALI and can assist in increasing the comprehensive utilization rate of Salvia miltiorrhiza.
Regardless of major advances in diagnosis, prevention and treatment strategies, cancer is still a foreboding cause due to factors like chemoresistance, radioresistance, adverse side effects and cancer recurrence. Therefore, continuous development of unconventional approaches is a prerequisite to overcome foregoing glitches. Natural products have found their way into treatment of serious health conditions, including cancer since ancient times. The compound oroxylin A (OA) is one among those with enormous potential against different malignancies. It is a flavonoid obtained from the several plants such as Oroxylum indicum, Scutellaria baicalensis and S. lateriflora, Anchietea pyrifolia, and Aster himalaicus.
The main purpose of this study is to comprehensively elucidate the anticancerous effects of OA against various malignancies and unravel their chemosensitization and radiosensitization potential. Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies of OA have also been investigated.

In residential long-term care, military service veterans with co-occurring posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dementia encounter a range of physical and social stimuli that may serve as triggers of trauma-related distress that manifests as care rejection or aggression. Yet, PTSD rarely has been examined in research to understand behaviors of care rejection and aggression in veterans with dementia.
Guided by the need-driven dementia-compromised behavior model, we examined the moderation effect of PTSD on pathways from background factors and interpersonal triggers to rejection of care and aggression among veterans with dementia with and without co-occurring PTSD.
Secondary data analysis of the Staff Training in Assisted Living Residences-Veterans Health Administration (STAR-VA) intervention evaluation by the U.S. Veterans Health Administration healthcare system.
