This study is the first to assess the development of the hormonal stress response in nestlings of a tropical bird, which is of interest because of our still-developing understanding of how tropical and temperate species differ physiologically. Finally, findings here underscore the importance of validating and adjusting sampling protocols that quantify nestling stress responses, as sampling timelines identified for adults may underestimate the magnitude of the nestling stress response.Baseline concentrations of glucocorticoids (i.e., cortisol and/or corticosterone) can moderately increase with the degree of energy demands that an individual faces. This could be a mechanism based on which glucocorticods (GCs) can mediate life history trade-offs, and therefore fitness. The 'cort-fitness hypothesis' predicts a negative relationship between GCs and fitness, meanwhile the 'cort-adaptation hypothesis' predicts the opposite pattern. Field studies on the relation between baseline GCs and survival rate have shown mixed results, supporting both positive and negative effect. These ambiguous results could be partially consequence of the short time frame in that most of the studies are carried on. In this study, we tested the predictions of the 'cort-fitness hypothesis' and 'cort-adaptation hypothesis' by using long-term data (eight-year of capture-mark-recapture) of Thorn-tailed Rayadito (Aphrastura spinicauda) in two populations at different latitudes. We assessed whether survival varied as a function of Cort levels and whether it varied in a linear (positive 'cort-adaptation hypothesis' or negative 'cort-fitness hypothesis') or curvilinear way. The two populations in our study had different baseline Cort levels, then we evaluated whether the association between baseline Cort and survival probability varied between them. In the high latitude population (i.e., lower baseline Cort levels), we observed a marginally quadratic relationship that is consistent with the cort-fitness hypothesis. In contrast, in the low altitude population we did not find this relation. Our findings suggests that the association between baseline Cort and survival probability is context-dependent, and highlights the importance of comparing different populations and the use of long-term data.While insulin demonstrates to have a considerable influence on the reproductive system, there are various unanswered questions regarding its precise sites, mechanisms of action, and roles for the developing and functioning of the adult male reproductive system. Apart from its effects on glucose level, insulin has an important role in the reproductive system directly by binding on insulin and IGF receptors in the brain and testis. To date, however, the effect of insulin or its alterations on blood-testis-barrier, as an important regulator of normal spermatogenesis and fertility, has not yet been studied. This review aimed to focus on the experimental and clinical studies to describe mechanisms by which insulin affects the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, testicular cells, spermatozoa, and sexual behavior. Moreover, we discussed the mechanism and impact of insulin changes in type 1 (insulin deficiency along with persisted or even increased sensitivity) and 2 (insulin resistance along with increased insulin level at the early stages of disease) diabetes and obesity on the male reproductive tract.A common response to parasite infestations is increased production of glucocorticoid hormones that regulate immune function. We examined relationships between ectoparasite infestations and fecal corticosterone metabolites (FCM) in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus). Furthermore, we experimentally removed fleas to determine if reductions in ectoparasites affected FCM production. Individuals were assigned to control (no flea removal) or treatment (anti-flea application, physical combing) groups and individuals were recaptured to assess changes in FCM concentrations. There was a significant and negative effect of number of anti-flea treatment applications on FCM concentrations of deer mice. However, models including host biology traits and environmental predictors had a better model fit compared to models containing ectoparasite predictors. Bromoenol lactone mouse In particular, there was a significant relationship of deer mouse FCM with date and host age, where glucocorticoid production decreased towards the end of the breeding season and increased with age. Overall, adverse events associated with reproduction and age class, rather than ectoparasites, may be more important to variation in glucocorticoids of deer mice.Environmental enrichment (EE) dynamically regulates gene expression and synaptic plasticity with positive consequences on behavior. The present study was performed on field-mice to explore the effects of EE on both captive-condition inducing social stress and epigenetic changes of molecules resilience stress. For this purpose, field-mice were caught and allowed to habituate in standard laboratory conditions for 7 days. The next day animals were randomly assigned to three groups i) mice at short-term standard condition (STSC); which were subjected to social interaction test (SIT) on day 9, ii) mice continuously maintainedfor additional 30 days, with these long-term standard conditions (LTSC), and iii) mice maintained in an EE cage for additional 30 days. After achieving SIT, we examined epigenetic changes of a repertory of molecules associated with resilience stress, by determining their levels by Western blot. Thus, the main findings were that during SIT, EE exerted more social interaction of field-mice with the strangers compared with STSC and LTSC mice. Related with social behavior results, we found that in mice subjected to EE the levels of histone 3 lysine 9 di-methylation (H3K9me2), glucocorticoid receptor (GR), N-methyl-D asparate (NMDA) receptor subunits NR2A and NR2B, postsynaptic density protein-95 (PSD-95), and mature brain-derived neurotrophic factor (mBDNF) were significantly elevated; whereas the levels of DNA methyltransferase-3A (DNMT3A), methyl-CpG-binding protein-2 (MeCP2), repressor element-1 silencing transcription factor (REST), H3K4me2 and lysine demethylase-1A (KDM1A) decreased. These results suggest that enhanced sociability of EE mice could be mediated, in part, by altered expression of molecules regulating glutamate signaling pathway through GR by epigenetic mechanisms.
