6-78.4% compared to the literature values, implying low Si-C bond density in the microstructures. The scale effect on both thermal conductivity and Young's modulus was not significant.Periodontal disease is a widespread disorder comprising gingivitis, a mild early gum inflammation, and periodontitis, a more severe multifactorial inflammatory disease that, if left untreated, can lead to the gradual destruction of the tooth-supporting apparatus. To date, effective etiopathogenetic models fully explaining the clinical features of periodontal disease are not available. Obviously, a better understanding of periodontal disease could facilitate its diagnosis and improve its treatment. The purpose of this study was to employ a proteomic approach to analyze the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of patients with severe periodontitis, in search of potential biomarkers. GCF samples, collected from both periodontally healthy sites (H-GCF) and the periodontal pocket (D-GCF), were subjected to a comparison analysis using sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). A total of 26 significantly different proteins, 14 up-regulated and 12 down-regulated in D-GCF vs. H-GCF, were identified by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The main expressed proteins were inflammatory molecules, immune responders, and host enzymes. Most of these proteins were functionally connected using the STRING analysis database. Once validated in a large scale-study, these proteins could represent a cluster of promising biomarkers capable of making a valuable contribution for a better assessment of periodontitis.Concrete-filled composite columns are widely used in the construction industry, exploiting the benefits of combining steel and concrete, providing, for instance, high load-bearing capacities and enhanced fire resistance. These solutions are extensively used in high-rise buildings and/or when high fire resistance performance requirements are imposed. In this exploratory research, a new type of concrete-filled composite column is investigated using fire resistance tests. Promoting the use of cold-formed steel products and developing innovative solutions for low-rise buildings with lower passive fire protection requirements led to the solutions presented in this research. Hence, a set of fire-resistance tests were undertaken on concrete-filled closed built-up cold-formed steel columns, where single cold-formed steel shapes are combined and fastened to create a box-shaped cross-section. The experimental results were then compared with the corresponding bare steel solutions to assess, in detail, the observed enhancements. Additionally, the effect of restraint on thermal elongation was assessed. The field of nanotechnology is concerned with the creation and application of materials having a nanoscale spatial dimensioning. Having a considerable surface area to volume ratio, nanoparticles have particularly unique properties. Several chemical and physical strategies have been used to prepare zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs). Still, biological methods using green or natural routes in various underlying substances (e.g., plant extracts, enzymes, and microorganisms) can be more environmentally friendly and cost-effective than chemical and/or physical methods in the long run. ZnO-NPs are now being studied as antibacterial agents in nanoscale and microscale formulations. The purpose of this study is to analyze the prevalent traditional method of generating ZnO-NPs, as well as its harmful side effects, and how it might be addressed utilizing an eco-friendly green approach. The study's primary focus is on the potential biomedical applications of green synthesized ZnO-NPs. Biocompatibility and biomedical qualities have been improved in green-synthesized ZnO-NPs over their traditionally produced counterparts, making them excellent antibacterial and cancer-fighting drugs. Additionally, these ZnO-NPs are beneficial when combined with the healing processes of wounds and biosensing components to trace small portions of biomarkers linked with various disorders. It has also been discovered that ZnO-NPs can distribute and sense drugs. Green-synthesized ZnO-NPs are compared to traditionally synthesized ones in this review, which shows that they have outstanding potential as a potent biological agent, as well as related hazardous properties. As the commercially most-used Ti-6Al-4V alloy has a different modulus of elasticity compared to the modulus of elasticity of bone and contains allergenic elements, β-Ti alloy could be a suitable substitution in orthopedics. The spark plasma sintering (SPS) method is feasible for the preparation of materials, with very low porosity and fine-grained structure, leading to higher mechanical properties. In this study, we prepared quaternary Ti-25Nb-4Ta-8Sn alloy using the spark plasma sintering method. The material was also heat-treated in order to homogenize the structure and compare the microstructure and properties in as-sintered and annealed states. The SPS sample had a modulus of elasticity of about 63 ± 1 GPa, which, after annealing, increased to the value of 73 ± 1 GPa. The tensile yield strength (TYS) of the SPS sample was 730 ± 52 MPa, ultimate tensile strength (UTS) 764 ± 10 MPa, and ductility 22 ± 9%. Annealed samples reached higher values of TYS and UTS (831 ± 60 MPa and 954 ± 48 MPa), but the ductility decreased to the value of 3 ± 1%. The obtained results are discussed considering the observed microstructure of the alloy.Residual stresses affect the fatigue behavior, given that compressive stresses delay the phenomenon, while tensile stresses accelerate it. However, the mechanisms behind the effect of residual stresses are not totally understood. A numerical study is developed here to understand the effect of thermal residual stresses (TRSs) on fatigue crack growth (FCG). The crack driving force was assumed to be the cumulative plastic strain at the crack tip. The heating of a region ahead of the crack tip produced elastic compressive TRS, which were 69% of material's yield stress. Alternatively, plastic deformation was produced by severe cooling followed by heating to generate compressive residual stresses. The crack propagation in the compressive residual stress field produced a decrease in the FCG rate. On the other hand, without the contact of crack flanks, the TRS showed no effect on FCG. Therefore, the TRSs only affect FCG by changing the crack closure level.Essential oils have been used in diverse areas such as packaging, agriculture and cosmetics, for their antimicrobial and pesticide activity. The organic volatile compounds of the essential oils are involved in its activity. Controlling their release helps to prolong their functionality. In this study, a functionalized calcium carbonate porous coating was employed to control the release of thyme and rosemary oil in a confined space. The release rate was evaluated at 7 °C and 23 °C, gravimetrically. Dorsomorphin It was shown that the capillary effect of the porous coating slowed down the release of the volatiles into the headspace compared to the bulk essential oil. A linear drive force model was used to fit the obtained data from both essential oils. The model showed that rosemary reached the asymptotic mass loss equilibrium faster than thyme. This result can be explained by the diverse composition and concentration of monoterpenoids between the two essential oils. Temperature and degree of loading also played important roles in the desorption of the essential oils. It was observed that at high degrees of loading and temperatures the desorption of essential oils was higher. The above-described technology could be used for applications related to food preservation, pest control among others. The objective of this study is to determine selected properties of thin-walled rotationally moulded composite parts. Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) filled with quartz flour (QF, 5-35 wt.%) was tested. High-density polyethylene functionalized with maleic anhydride (HDPE-g-MA) was used as a compatibility agent. Polymer samples were prepared with and without the compatibility agent (2 wt.% in relation to the QF content). The study investigated the effect of QF content and HDPE-g-MA on the properties of rotationally moulded parts, including their melt flow rate (MFR), thermal properties (DSC and TGA), thermomechanical properties (VST), mechanical and physical properties, microstructure, and geometry. Results showed that the properties of LLDPE/QF with HDPE-g-MA were significantly higher than those of LLDPE/QF without HDPE-g-MA. It was also found that the compatibility agent improved the composite material's thermal stability. This improvement was attributed to interactions occurring between the composite material components due to the use of the compatibility agent. In addition to that, microscopic examination demonstrated that the use of HDPE-g-MA improved miscibility of the composite material components. The composite samples containing HDPE-g-MA had better surface geometry. In the current paper, the results of the sensitization process' influence on the refractive organic materials' features are shown. The correlation between the refractive properties and the intermolecular charge transfer effect of doped organic thin films are shown via estimation of the laser-induced change in the refractive index. The refractive parameter is shown for a model organics matrix based on a polyimide doped with fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, reduced graphene oxides, etc. A second harmonic of the Nd-laser was used to record the holographic gratings in the Raman-Nath diffraction conditions at different spatial frequencies. The laser-induced refractive index change was considered to be an indicator in order to estimate the basic organic materials' physical-chemical characteristics. Additional data are presented for the liquid crystal cells doped with nanoparticles. The correlation between the content of the nanoobjects in the organics' bodies and the contact angle at the thin film surfaces is shown. Some propose to use this effect for general optoelectronics, for the optical limiting process, and for display application. The damage and failure of coiling tube in biomass carbonization kettle due to the long-term operation was discussed. According to the actual structure of the carbonization kettle, a three-dimensional model was established, and the temperature field was simulated based on the given design parameters. The results show that the temperature distribution is stable during 440~450 °C, and the relative error with the actual temperature 449.2 °C, which is about 0.78%. The tensile specimens made of 20G steel, the common material of the coil, was placed in a tubular furnace, and the real heat treatment conditions were simulated with mixed gas and water vapor. After that, the uniaxial tensile test was carried out on MTS testing machine. The obtained physical parameters such as yield strength and elastic modulus were substituted into the numerical temperature field model to obtain the stress field model. The simulation results indicate that during the initial ventilation of the equipment, the coil compressed with the maximum stress of 8.
