Both carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and arterial plaques have been shown to predict future CV events. Since there are no previous studies on the subject, our objective was to compare carotid IMT and the length of plaques in abdominal-pelvic main arteries in CV risk assessment in a prospective study setting with a follow-up of over 20 years.
A total of 1007 patients (50% men), aged 51±6.0 years, participated in the current study. Carotid IMT and the summarized plaque length (SUM) from abdominal aorta to common femoral arteries were ultrasonographically assessed. Patients were followed-up a median (1st-3rd quartile) of 22.5 (17.5-23.2) years for CV events.
SUM significantly predicted CV events (HR per every 10mm increase 1.035, 95% CI 1.027-1.044, p< 0.001). Those in the highest SUM tertile had over 3-fold risk for CV event (HR 3.392, 95% CI 2.427-4.741, p<0.001) when compared to those in the lowest tertile. SUM significantly predicted CV events even after adjusting for age, sex, hypertension, diabetes, smoking (pack-years), LDL cholesterol and IMT. Adding SUM to the established model improved C-index (95% CI) from 0.706 (0.674-0.738) to 0.718 (0.688-0.747) as well as both discrimination (p<0.001) and reclassification (p<0.001) of the patients. In contrast, IMT predicted cardiovascular events only in univariate analysis and it did not improve discrimination or reclassification of the patients.
In light of our findings, SUM is a superior indicator and clinical tool for evaluating the overall CV risk compared to carotid IMT.

Testing data is extremely limited and unreliable, which restricts health authorities' ability to deal with the pandemic. Given the stark demographic, social and economic heterogeneities within Brazilian cities, it is important to identify hotspots so that the limited resources available can have the greatest impact. This study shows that decentralised monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in sewage can be used to assess the distribution of COVID-19 prevalence in the city. The methodology developed in this study allowed the identification of hotspots by comprehensively monitoring sewers distributed through Belo Horizonte, Brazil's third largest city. Our results show that the most vulnerable neighbourhoods in the city were the hardest hit by the pandemic, indicating that, for many Brazilians, the situation is much worse than reported by official figures.The adsorption-desorption behaviour of heavy metals in aquatic environments is complex and the processes are regulated by the continuous interactions between water and sediments. This study provides a quantitative understanding of the effects of nutrients and key water and sediment properties on the adsorption-desorption behaviour of heavy metals in riverine and estuarine environments. The influence levels of the environmental factors were determined as conditional regression coefficients. The research outcomes indicate that the mineralogical composition of sediments, which influence other sediment properties, such as specific surface area and cation exchange capacity, play the most important role in the adsorption and desorption of heavy metals. It was found that particulate organic matter is the most influential nutrient in heavy metals adsorption in the riverine environment, while particulate phosphorus is more important under estuarine conditions. Dissolved nutrients do not exert a significant positive effect on the release of heavy metals in the riverine area, whilst dissolved phosphorus increases the transfer of specific metals from sediments to the overlying water under estuarine conditions. Furthermore, the positive interdependencies between marine-related ions and the release of most heavy metals in the riverine and estuarine environments indicate an increase in the mobility of heavy metals as a result of cation exchange reactions.Adropin (ADR) plays a role in metabolism regulation and its alterations in obesity and diabetes have been found. Treatment with ADR was beneficial in metabolic diseases, and physical exercise increased ADR concentrations in obese patients. However, data on the distribution of ADR in the brain are sparse. The role of metabolic status and physical exercise on its expression in the brain is undiscovered. We hypothesized that diabetes type 2 (DM2) and/or exercise will alter number of ADR-immunoractive (-ir) cells in the rat brain. Animals were divided into groups diabetes type 2 (receiving high-fat diet and injections of streptozotocin) and control (fed laboratory chow diet; C). Rats were further divided into running group (2 weeks of forced exercise on a treadmill) and non-running group. Body mass, metabolic and hormonal profiles were assessed. Immunohistochemistry was run to study ADR-ir cells in the brain. We found that 1) in DM2 animals, running decreased insulin and increased glucose concentrations; 2) in C rats, running decreased insulin concentrations and had no effect on glucose concentration in blood; 3) running increased corticosterone (CORT) concentrations in DM2 and C rats; 4) ADR-ir cells were detected in the hippocampus and ADR-ir fibers in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus, which is a novel location; 5) metabolic status and running, however, did not change number of these cells. We concluded that 2 weeks of forced moderate intensity locomotor training induced stress response present as increased concentration of CORT and did not influence number of ADR-ir cells in the brain.

Taking these concerns as our point of departure, we explore the relationships between vaping and smoking among a cohort of young people.
Qualitative longitudinal methods with a diverse sample of 36 14-18-year olds from the UK city of Leicester. A total of 66 depth interviews conducted across two phases separated by 6-12 months. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed.
We highlight a complex 'tangle' of connections between substances/risk behaviours recounted to us by our adolescent study participants, including multiple and multilinear relationships between vaping and smoking.
