Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) leaflets (OPLs) are one of the major agricultural by-products generated from the massive cultivation of Malaysian palm oil. This biomass is also reported to be of potential value based on its health-improving effects. By employing proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy combined with multivariate data analysis (MVDA), the metabolite profile of OPLs was characterized and correlated with their antioxidant and wound healing properties. Principal component analysis (PCA) classified four varieties of extracts, prepared using solvents ranging from polar to medium polarity, into three distinct clusters. Cumulatively, six flavonoids, eight organic acids, four carbohydrates, and an amine were identified from the solvent extracts. The more polar extracts, such as, the ethyl acetate-methanol, absolute methanol, and methanol-water, were richer in phytochemicals. ARS-1620 Based on partial least square (PLS) analysis, the constituents in these extracts, such as (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, orientin, isoorientin, vitexin, and isovitexin, were strongly correlated with the measured antioxidant activities, comprising ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and nitric oxide (NO) free radical scavenging activities, as well as with cell proliferation and migration activities. This study has provided crucial evidence on the importance of these natural antioxidant compounds on the wound healing properties of OPL.Andean blueberry (Vaccinium meridionale Swartz) fruits are an underutilized source of anthocyanins and other valuable bioactive phytochemicals. The purpose of this work was to obtain Andean blueberry juice powders via freeze-drying processing and evaluate the effect of maltodextrin as a drying aid on their physicochemical, technological, microstructural, and bioactive characteristics. Andean blueberry juices were mixed with variable proportions of maltodextrin (20-50%); freeze-dried; and characterized in terms of their tristimulus color, Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), moisture content, water activity, morphology, water solubility, flow properties, total polyphenols and anthocyanins content, and DPPH•-scavenging capacity. The powders obtained presented suitable characteristics in terms of their water activity (60% for total monomeric anthocyanins), with antioxidant activities up to 4 mg equivalent of gallic acid/g of dry matter. Although an increased content of maltodextrin resulted in lower concentrations of phytochemicals, as expected, it also favored an increased % recovery (over 90% of total phenolics at the highest maltodextrin proportion) and improved their flow properties. Freeze-dried juice powders are a potential alternative for the stabilization and value addition of this fruit as a new source of functionality for processed foods.Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) is a type of systemic vasculitis with eosinophilia in the peripheral blood, which is preceded by bronchial asthma or allergic disease. EGPA is pathologically characterized by microangiopathy granulomatosis vasculitis. Vasculitis can be exacerbated and cause central nervous system and cardiovascular disorders and gastrointestinal perforation. Histological examination reveals eosinophil infiltration and granulomas in lesions in areas such as the lung, nervous system, and skin. Laboratory tests show inflammatory findings such as C-reactive protein (CRP) elevation, increased eosinophils, elevated serum IgE, and elevated myeloperoxidase-anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (MPO-ANCA). MPO-ANCA is positive in approximately 40-70% of cases of this disease. EGPA is a necrotizing vasculitis that affects small- and medium-sized blood vessels; however, it differs from other types of ANCA-related vasculitis (such as microscopic polyangiitis and granulomatosis) because it is preceded by bronchial asthma and eosinophilia in the blood and tissues. Treatment with immunosuppressive agents such as steroids or cyclophosphamide depends on the Five Factor Score, which predicts the prognosis and severity of the condition. If the effect of appropriate treatment with steroids is insufficient, the anti-interleukin-5 antibody mepolizumab can be administered. The combination of mepolizumab with standard treatment leads to a significantly longer duration of remission, a higher proportion of patients who achieve sustained remission, and less steroid use than with a placebo.Discovering antibiotic molecules able to hold the growing spread of antimicrobial resistance is one of the most urgent endeavors that public health must tackle. The case of Gram-negative bacterial pathogens is of special concern, as they are intrinsically resistant to many antibiotics, due to an outer membrane that constitutes an effective permeability barrier. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been pointed out as potential alternatives to conventional antibiotics, as their main mechanism of action is membrane disruption, arguably less prone to elicit resistance in pathogens. Here, we investigate the in vitro activity and selectivity of EcDBS1R4, a bioinspired AMP. To this purpose, we have used bacterial cells and model membrane systems mimicking both the inner and the outer membranes of Escherichia coli, and a variety of optical spectroscopic methodologies. EcDBS1R4 is effective against the Gram-negative E. coli, ineffective against the Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and noncytotoxic for human cells. EcDBS1R4 does not form stable pores in E. coli, as the peptide does not dissipate its membrane potential, suggesting an unusual mechanism of action. Interestingly, EcDBS1R4 promotes a hemi-fusion of vesicles mimicking the inner membrane of E. coli. This fusogenic ability of EcDBS1R4 requires the presence of phospholipids with a negative curvature and a negative charge. This finding suggests that EcDBS1R4 promotes a large lipid spatial reorganization able to reshape membrane curvature, with interesting biological implications herein discussed.The presence of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella spp. in the environment is of great public health interest, worldwide. Furthermore, its extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing strains constitute an emerging global health concern due to their limited treatment options in hospital. Therefore, this study aimed at characterising and tracking nonresistant and ESBL-producing Salmonella spp. from agricultural settings to nearby water sources highlighting their antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) and virulence factor (VF) distribution using a combination of both culture-dependent and independent methods. Furthermore, this study investigated the diversity and shared serovars among sampled matrices using amplicon sequencing of the invasion gene A (invA) of Salmonella spp. The results showed that soil had the highest prevalence of Salmonella spp. (62.5%, 65/104) and ESBL-producing Salmonella (34.6%, 36/104). For typed ARG, the most commonly detected gene was blaOXA with 75% (30/40), followed by blaCTX-M 67.5% (27/40),blaTEM 40% (16/40) and sul1 30% (12/40) gene; blaSHV gene was not detected in isolated ESBL-producing Salmonella spp. For VF, the most detected gene was invA (96.9%, 38/40), followed by spaM (17.5%, 7/40), spiC (40%, 16/40), orfL (32.5%, 13/40), misL 32.5% (13/40) and pipD 32.5 (13/40). link2 For diversity analysis, soil, manure, irrigation water and nearby freshwater revealed 81, 68, 12 and 9 serovars, respectively. Soil, manure, irrigation water and freshwater stream samples shared five serovars, which indicated circulation of ESBL-producing Salmonella spp. within the agricultural environment and nearby water sources. Soil is therefore identified as one of the major reservoirs of ESBL-producing Salmonella spp. It is concluded that agricultural environment contamination may have a direct relationship with the presence of antibiotic-producing Salmonella in freshwater streams.This study compared the effect of two dietary vegetable oils on plasma biochemical indices, haematological parameters, and redox status of horses. Forty riding horses (20 mares and 20 stallions) of the Malopolski breed were divided equally into two groups that were similar in terms of age, sex, and body weight (on average 530 ± 30 kg). The horses received soybean oil (SO) or flaxseed oil (FO) in the amount of 25 mL per 100 kg BW/day. After 60 days, blood was collected for biochemical and haematological analyses. The results show that horses receiving FO as compared to the SO group had significantly lower plasma levels of glucose, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio and triacylglycerols, as well as the activities of alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase. In turn, %HDL-TC and lactate dehydrogenase activity were significantly higher in the FO group. The inclusion of FO in the diet contributed to an increase in antioxidant indices creatinine, vitamin C, copper, and zinc contents and also superoxide dismutase and catalase activities. The level of the end product of lipid peroxidation, i.e., malonyl dialdehyde, in the FO group as compared to the SO group was significantly lower. Moreover, FO caused an elevation in red blood cell indicators, lymphocyte count and lysozymes. In conclusion, FO exerts a beneficial effect by stimulating antioxidant defence mechanisms of horses and reducing the severity of oxidative stress. FO also improved the lipid profile and haematological parameters of the blood. The replacement of SO by FO is recommended based on these findings.In this paper, an approach to determine the thermal impedance of a multi-chip silicon carbide (SiC) power module is proposed, by fusing optical measurement and multi-physics simulations. The tested power module consists of four parallel SiC metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) and four parallel SiC Schottky barrier diodes. This study mainly relies on junction temperature measurements performed using fiber optic temperature sensors instead of temperature-sensitive electrical parameters (TESPs). However, the fiber optics provide a relatively slow response compared to other available TSEP measurement methods and cannot detect fast responses. link3 Therefore, the region corresponding to undetected signals is estimated via multi-physics simulations of the power module. This method provides a compensated cooling curve. We analyze the thermal resistance using network identification by deconvolution (NID). The estimated thermal resistance is compared to that obtained via a conventional method, and the difference is 3.8%. The proposed fusion method is accurate and reliable and does not require additional circuits or calibrations.Molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) is a two-dimensional (2D) MXene material which makes it a promising photoelectric material. In this study, reflective type MXene Mo2C thin films were coated on a silver mirror by a magnetron sputtering method and were subsequently used in a passively Q-switched solid-state pulsed laser generator at the central wavelengths of 1.06 and 1.34 μm, respectively. The fabricated thin films of reflective type MXene Mo2C exhibited large modulation depth of 6.86% and 5.38% at the central wavelengths of 1064 and 1342 nm, respectively. By inserting the Mo2C saturable absorbers (SAs) into V-shaped NdYAG laser, short pulses were generated having a pulse duration, pulse energy, and average output power of 254 ns, 2.96 μJ, and 275 mW, respectively, at a wavelength of 1.06 μm. Similarly, shorter laser pulses were obtained in NdYVO4 laser at 1.34 μm. Our results illustrated potential of the 2D MXene Mo2C films for laser applications.
