EV infections can be asymptomatic or symptomatic with conditions ranging from mild illnesses to serious diseases such as dilated cardiomyopathy. A causal relationship between EV infections and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has been heavily debated, with some studies suggesting that this relationship is not yet conclusive and requires additional evidence, whereas others strongly argue for this correlation. While this relationship is well investigated in some developed countries like the USA and Finland, it is understudied or neglected in other countries like Russia for many reasons such as the low incidence of T1DM. Although the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are highly affected by T1DM, the role of EVs in the disease in MENA has not been investigated extensively. Therefore, we aimed to address the relationship between T1DM and EVs in MENA and other regions globally.A joint- or crack-opening resistance evaluation method for the selection of optimal waterproofing material for a railroad bridge deck is proposed. The joint opening range (mm) for the evaluation, and a typical load case of a high-speed double-track railroad bridge structure deck, is analyzed through the finite element method (FEM) and the results of analysis are used to calculate the minimum opening range. The proposal for the evaluation criteria and the specimen test results demonstrate how the evaluation method is pertinent for future selection of waterproofing membranes for the sustainability of high-speed railroad bridge deck structures.Different modification methods, such as adding modifiers and pretreating crumb rubber, have been developed to achieve decent engineering properties and reduce the viscosity of rubberized bitumen. This study evaluated the influence of the modification methods on the aging resistance for rubberized bitumen. Two types of crumb rubber-a 40-mesh crumb rubber and a microwave-pretreated crumb rubber-and two kinds of modifiers-Sasobit and Trans-polyoctenamer-were selected to prepare rubberized bitumen. The samples were subjected to a Thin-Film Oven Test for the simulation of the short-term aging condition, while a Pressure-Aging-Vessel test was used to simulate the long-term aging condition. The indexes of rubberized bitumen, including softening point, elastic recovery ratio, maximum load, ductility, fracture energy, phase angle, and dynamic modulus, were tested before and after aging. The result showed that trans-polyoctenamer displayed the best resistance to short-term aging, while Sasobit significantly improved the fracture energy of rubberized bitumen after short-term aging. Microwave pretreated partially destroyed the internal structure of crumb rubber, leading to a decrease of short-term aging resistance for rubberized bitumen. Compared with short-term aging, the changing trends of various indexes were basically same, except the discrepancy of properties indexes was reduced after long-term aging.Unconventional oil and gas exploitation, which has developed in the UK since 2009, is regulated by four main agencies The Oil and Gas Authority, the Environment Agency, the Health and Safety Executive and local Mineral Planning Authorities (usually county councils). Ascorbate (vitamin C) is a potent antioxidant and is associated with neurological and cognitive function. In this study we assessed the ascorbate status of a cohort of people with Parkinson's disease (n = 215), aged 50-90 years, compared with a cohort of age matched healthy controls (n = 48). The study sample's cognitive status ranged from normal to mild cognitive impairment and dementia. There was no difference between the Parkinson's disease and healthy control groups with respect to mean ascorbate status, however, a higher proportion of participants with Parkinson's disease had hypovitaminosis C (i.e., 23 µmol/L (p = 0.014). Ascorbate concentrations were significantly lower in the cognitively impaired subgroup compared with the normal cognition subgroup in the Parkinson's disease cohort (p = 0.03). In contrast, urate showed an inverse correlation with cognitive function (r = -0.19, p = 0.007), with higher urate concentrations observed in the cognitively impaired subgroup compared with the normal cognition subgroup (p = 0.015). There was an inverse association between ascorbate status and urate concentrations (r = -0.15, p = 0.017). Plasma protein carbonyls, a measure of systemic oxidative stress, were not significantly different between the Parkinson's disease cohort and healthy controls, and there was no association with cognitive function (r = 0.09, p = 0.19) or with ascorbate status (r = -0.05, p = 0.45). Overall, our study showed ascorbate status was positively associated with cognitive function in Parkinson's disease, suggesting that longitudinal studies investigating the temporal sequence of cognitive decline and ascorbate status are warranted.
