The mushroom P. citrinopileatus has strong ability to uptake selenium from the surroundings, which modifies many biological pathways. This paper provides a theoretical reference for the development of Se-enriched fungal foods.Phallus atrovolvatus is a wild edible mushroom found in Thailand. Three strains of Ph. atrovolvatus (DOAP-1, DOAP-2, and DOAP-3) were collected from forests in Central Thailand. Some requirements for mycelial growth were obtained in different media. Potato dextrose agar was determined as the best medium to support mycelial growth (83.50 mm after incubation for 7 days). Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on the sequence of internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS4) confirmed DOAP-1 species status within Phallaceae as Ph. atrovolvatus with high levels of similarity at 99.34%. Antioxidant properties of hot water extract from the fruiting body of three isolates (CMP-1, CMP-2, and CMP-3) were also evaluated. Highest free radical scavenging ability was found in CMP-1 (94.94% at 2.0 mg/mL) whereas crude mushroom extracts exhibited very strong ferrous-ion chelating effects of 99.16% at 10 mg/ mL. Results indicating that all CMP isolates from Ph. atrovolvatus possess excellent antioxidant properties from natural sources.The antidiabetic effect of different doses of water extract (WE) and ethanol extract (EE) was tested on a high-fat diet and streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Parameters were evaluated with normal control (NC), diabetes mellitus control (DM), and metformin (M) groups. In the experiment, nine groups were used with eight rats in each group and three doses of each WE and EE were used, with low, medium, and high doses. The results revealed that the DM group lost a significant amount of weight, whereas the NC group's weight increased throughout the experiment. After treatment with Fomitopsis pinicola, the EE group's weight increased gradually. Liver, kidney, and pancreas weight decreased after STZ injection and returned to normal in EE treated groups. Fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels were observed to be significantly lower after F. pinicola treatment. Serum insulin levels were also restored to normal after mushroom extracts supplementation. Specifically, STZ-induced hyperglycemia was inhibited by high dose EE administration. The biochemical analysis revealed that high-dose EE treatment increased HDL-C and decreased TC, TG, and LDL-C. Results demonstrated that high-dose EE administration protected the organ tissues from oxidative stress by normalizing the antioxidant levels, and CAT, SOD, and GSH-Px suppressed the lethal effect of MDA. The study concluded that F. pinicola EE at the dose 300 mg/kg has a more hypoglycemic, hyperinsulinemic, antioxidant, and antihyperlipidemic effect than NC, DM, and M, and regulates hyperglycemia by increasing insulin secretion.Ganoderma lucidum is a mushroom used in traditional Chinese medicine for its purported health benefits. Its complex chemical composition and potential synergies between bioactive compounds make it desirable to design a product that retains most of these compounds in a single formulation. In this article we evaluate a novel G. lucidum nutraceutical suspension (GNS) that reunites two fractions, an ethanolic extract and an aqueous extract, in a single oral liquid product. Back-to-back ethanolic and water extracts were mixed and the fraction that precipitates was recovered. Genetic or somatic mutations causes the transformation of normal epithelium of colon into precancerous stage and eventually to metastatic phenotype in nearly 10 to 15 years. This progression is depending heavily on the tumor induced angiogenesis, which significantly impact the survival of the patients. Angiogenesis is majorly promoted by hypoxia, growth factors, macrophages, and non-coding RNAs as well as distinct signaling pathways in metastatic CCs. Blocking of antiangiogenic pathway using phytochemicals, small molecules, synthetic derivatives alone or along with chemotherapeutics substantially enhanced disease control as well as overall survival of patients with metastatic CC in second line treatment. Further, clinical trials showed benefit of adjuvant chemotherapeutics for treating metastatic CC patients. This chapter attempts to summarize the recent updates of angiogenic promotes of metastatic CC and targeted therapeutics for adjuvant therapy in clinical trials.Current statistics related to cancer incidence and cancer-related death rates clearly show that specific racial/ethnic minorities are more likely to be diagnosed and/or die with cancer. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in the United States and it disproportionately affects the non-Hispanic Black or African American (AA) population. When compared to the non-Hispanic White (nHW) population, incidence and death rates in AAs are 28% and 60% higher, respectively. Hispanics have an overall lower CRC incidence rate than nHWs (Hispanics 35.5 per 100,000 population; nHWs 40.2 per 100,000 population), but their incidence continues to rise, unlike nHWs, who are experiencing a decline. This disparity between Hispanics and nHWs is further highlighted in the younger Hispanic population. While the cause of the disparities is associated with CRC-related genetic and environmental factors, the role of specific genes/mutations in each population are still not fully unraveled. However, because CRC is a slowly progressing disease, routine screening and/or early intervention are key to achieving better outcomes in CRC patients and ultimately in closing the disparity gap among different populations.
