Light is the crucial environmental signal for desiccation-tolerant cyanobacteria to activate photosynthesis and prepare for desiccation at dawn. However, the photobiological characteristics of desert cyanobacteria adaptation to one of the harshest habitats on Earth remain unresolved. In this study, we surveyed the genome of a subaerial desert cyanobacterium Nostoc flagelliforme and identified two phytochromes and seven cyanobacteriochromes (CBCRs) with one or more bilin-binding GAF (cGMP phosphodiesterase/adenylyl cyclase/FhlA) domains. Biochemical and spectroscopic analyses of 69 purified GAF-containing proteins from recombinant phycocyanobilin (PCB), biliverdin or phycoerythrobilin-producing Escherichia coli indicated that nine of these proteins bind chromophores. Further investigation revealed that 11 GAFs form covalent adducts responsive to near-UV and visible light eight GAFs contained PCB chromophores, three GAFs contained biliverdin chromophores and one contained the PCB isomer, phycoviolobilin. Interestingly, COO91_03972 is the first-ever reported GAF-only CBCR capable of sensing five wavelengths of light. Bioinformatics and biochemical analyses revealed that residue P132 of COO91_03972 is essential for chromophore binding to dual-cysteine CBCRs. Furthermore, the complement of N. flagelliforme CBCRs is enriched in red light sensors. We hypothesize that these sensors are critical for the acclimatization of N. flagelliforme to weak light environments at dawn.
The aim of the study was to gain insight on how nurse leaders manage a culture of safety for graduate nurses.

Current theoretical approaches to safety culture tend towards a checklist approach that focuses on institutional characteristics, failing to examine the quality of interpersonal relationships. These interpersonal interactions are often seen as separate from the institutional realities of resource allocation, nurse-patient ratios, patient acuity or throughput. A theoretical approach is required to illuminate the dialectic between the structure of an organisation and the agency created by nurse leaders to promote patient safety.

Qualitative exploratory descriptive study.

Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 24 nurse leaders from hospital and aged care settings. Thematic analysis and Giddens structuration theory was used to describe the findings.

Nurse leaders identified a range of reciprocal communicative and cultural norms and values, decision-making processes, personal nursing phiauthority vested in them by the formal structure of the organisation. In doing so, they sustain the structure and reinforce it.
Nurse leadership functions and decision-making capacity hinges on multiple factors including practicing agency and aspects of the social structure such as the rules for safe communication, and the various institutional protocols. Nurse leaders enforce these forms of engagement and practice through their legitimation as leaders. They have both allocative and authoritative resources; they can command resources, direct staff to attend to patients and/or clinical tasks, mentor, guide, assign, correct and encourage with the authority vested in them by the formal structure of the organisation. In doing so, they sustain the structure and reinforce it.
The aim of this study was to evaluate factors influencing mindfulness among clinical nurses in China.

Mindfulness has positive effects on nurses' negative emotions and job burnout. However, few studies have explored the antecedent variables of mindfulness.

A total of 358 clinical nurses in Beijing Aerospace Center Hospital completed a cross-sectional survey between July and September 2020. The study employed self-report questionnaires covering social demographics, mindfulness, anxiety, job burnout, emotion regulation, stress perception, resilience, well-being and loneliness.

The mean Mindful Attention Awareness Scale score was 66.82 ± 11.53, which is near the cut-off score between the high and medium mindfulness categories. Anxiety, stress perception, emotional exhaustion and expressive suppression negatively affected the level of mindfulness, while mental resilience and cognitive reappraisal positively influenced the level of mindfulness (all P < .05).

Hospital nurses have higher-than-normal levels of mindfulness. The mindfulness level of clinical nurses is related to anxiety, stress perception, resilience, cognitive reappraisal, emotional exhaustion and expressive suppression.

Nursing managers should consider the role and mechanism of positive psychology and develop targeted intervention measures to improve nurses' mindfulness, in order to further reduce their negative emotions, improve their sense of professional benefit and thus ensure the quality and safety of nursing.

The swim bladder of most larvae had inflated at 4 h post hatching (hph) in Japanese medaka and at 48 hph in zebrafish in controls. In both fish species, the swim bladder inflation was inhibited in larvae exposed to PFBA (lowest observed effect concentration [LOEC] in medaka 40 mg/L; in zebrafish 80 mg/L), TDCPP (LOEC in medaka 1 mg/L; in zebrafish 0.5 mg/L), and T3 (no inhibition in Japanese medaka; LOEC in zebrafish 7.5 μg/L). We also examined the influence of PFBA, TDCPP, and T3 on the expression of thyroid stimulating hormone subunit beta (tshβ) or thyroid hormone receptor alpha (trα) and beta (trβ). No changes were observed in the expression of genes after PFBA and TDCPP exposure; however, T3 exposure upregulated trα and trβ expression in both fish species. Our results show that inhibition of the swim bladder inflation at 4 hph in Japanese medaka and 48 hph in zebrafish is a potential indicator of thyroid hormone-disturbing activity of chemicals.Neutrophils play a crucial role in establishing inflammation in response to an infection or injury, but their production rates, as well as blood and tissue residence times, remain poorly characterized under these conditions. Herein, using a biomaterial implant model to establish inflammation followed by in vivo tracking of newly formed neutrophils, we determine neutrophil kinetics under inflammatory conditions. To obtain quantifiable information from our experimental observations, we develop an ordinary differential equation-based mathematical model to extract kinetic parameters. Our data show that in the presence of inflammation resulting in emergency granulopoiesis-like conditions, neutrophil maturation time in the bone marrow reduces by around 60% and reduced half-life in the blood, compared with noninflammatory conditions. Additionally, neutrophil residence time at the inflammatory site increases by 2-fold. Together, these data improve our understanding of neutrophil kinetics under inflammatory conditions, which could pave the way for therapies that focus on modulating in vivo neutrophil dynamics.Hepatitis B has been a well-documented risk factor of liver cancer and mortality. To what extent hepatitis B affects mortality through increasing liver cancer incidence is of research interest and remains to be studied. We formulate the research question as a hypothesis testing problem of causal mediation where both the mediator and the outcome are time-to-event variables. The problem is closely related to semicompeting risks because time to the intermediate event may be censored by an occurrence of the outcome. We propose two hypothesis testing methods a weighted log-rank test (WLR) and an intersection-union test (IUT). A test statistic of the WLR is constructed by adapting a nonparametric estimator of the mediation effect; however, the test may be conservative regarding its Type I Error rate. To address this, we further propose the IUT, the test statistic of which is constructed under the composite null hypothesis. Asymptotic properties of the two tests are studied, showing that the IUT is a size α test with better statistical power than the WLR. The theoretical properties are supported by extensive simulation studies under finite samples. Applying the proposed methods to the motivating hepatitis study, both WLR and IUT provided strong evidence that hepatitis B had a significant mediation effect on mortality via liver cancer incidence.Iatrogenic aortic dissection post primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is rare but yet a serious complication. In this report, we present a case of a 40-year-old lady who had an aortic dissection post PCI which was initially missed by the conventional contrast images and required a gated computerized tomography aortogram to confirm the diagnosis. The patient was managed with strict blood pressure control resulting in complete healing of the dissection after 72 hours of the management. The case illustrates the importance of selecting the correct imaging to make an accurate diagnosis when aortic dissection is suspected and outlines the importance of blood pressure control in treating iatrogenic aortic dissections.The prognosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in adults is inferior to that in children. Hence, ALL remains challenging to cure in the adult population. Aberrant genetic alterations have been observed in ALL, although the patterns of differential gene alterations in adult and pediatric ALL have not been comprehensively determined on a genome-wide scale. We investigated the biologic differences in genomic profiles between adults (n = 64) and children (n = 54) with ALL and relationship between genomic heterogeneity and prognosis. The 2 populations showed similar common mutation types but an increased prevalence of genetic alterations in adult ALL. The median numbers of gene mutations were 17 (range 1-53) and 4.5 (range 1-19) per sample in adult and pediatric ALL, respectively (p less then 0.001). An increased number of gene mutations and age were significantly correlated (R2 = 0.5853, p less then 0.001). We identified 122 and 53 driver genes in adult and pediatric ALL samples, respectively. IKZF1, IDH1, and TTN mutations were significantly enriched in adult patients with ALL. KRAS, ARID1A, and CREBBP mutations were significantly enriched in pediatric patients with ALL (p less then 0.05). The incidence of relapse was 40.0% and 9.6% in adult and pediatric patients with ALL, respectively (p = 0.003). The overall survival and relapse-free survival of adult patients with ALL were poorer than those of pediatric patients with ALL (p = 0.002 and p less then 0.001, respectively). This genomic landscape enhances the understanding of the biologic differences in ALL between the 2 populations and provides insight for developing therapeutic approaches.
