BACKGROUND Individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) often possess maladaptive traits and present with various difficulties in psychosocial functioning. However, little is known about the intimate partners of adults with bipolar disorder (BD) and how mental illnesses other than BD within couples may further complicate the picture. Such knowledge is needed to inform both couple and family interventions. METHODS Participants were parents whose children were enrolled in a prospective study 55 with BD and their partners, and 47 healthy control couples. All completed diagnostic interviews, and questionnaires describing personality traits, negative life events, coping skills, social support, marital adjustment and inter-partner verbal aggression. Parents with BD and healthy control parents were compared, as were the intimate partners. A series of exploratory analyses focused on the average measures within couples, with and without BD, and took account of comorbid personality disorders among those with BD and major depity in the these high risk families. Moreover, mental illnesses other than BD may contribute to marital problems within couples. Some statistical analyses, particularly those involving comorbid conditions, were under-powered in this study. As clinical implications, the current study suggests that both individuals with BD and their partners could benefit from interventions aimed at lowering emotionality and verbal aggression, and increasing social support and effective coping skills. We previously reported the VP4 and the VP7 genotypes of the first G6P[14] rotavirus strain (RVA/Human-wt/GHA/M0084/2010/G6P[14]) from the stool of an infant with diarrhoea in Ghana. In the current study, we obtained the complete genome sequences using Illumina MiSeq next-generation sequencing to enable us to determine the host species origin of the genes by phylogenetic analysis. The genotype constellation was G6-P[14]-I2-R2-C2-M2-A11-N2-T6-E2-H3. Phylogenetic analysis showed that M0084 was a reassortant strain from RVAs of both artiodactyl and human host species origin. The level of sequence identity of the individual genes of M0084 to other sequences in the GenBank ranged from 95.2 to 99.5%; however, there was no single strain from the GenBank database with a complete genome sequence that was highly similar to that of M0084. To help trace the source of such unique gene pools being introduced into human RVAs, it will be useful to examine RVA sequences from potential reservoirs such as sheep and goats, which are common domestic animals in this locality.Next-generation sequencing detected a novel virus from grapevine cultivar 'Kishmish Chjornyj' from Russia. Its complete genome sequence of 5625 nucleotides includes seven open reading frames encoding seven putative proteins similar to those of members of the genus Polerovirus in the family Luteoviridae. The novel virus showed graft-transmissibility and was tentatively named "grapevine polerovirus 1" (GPoV-1). Phylogenetic analysis using complete genome sequences of GPoV-1 and members of the family Luteoviridae indicated that although GPoV-1 is a member of the genus Polerovirus, it is unique within its clade. GPoV-1 is the first polerovirus detected in grapevine.Teschovirus A is currently the sole species in the genus Teschovirus, whose members are divided into 13 subtypes porcine teschovirus (PTV) 1-13. However, recent discoveries of novel PTV genotypes have suggested that a new species, "Teschovirus B", should be established. Here, we have identified six of the 19 known genotypes and two novel genotypes (PTV 17-18), revealing the high genetic diversity of the PTV subpopulation in indigenous pigs of western Jiangxi, China. Moreover, we determined the nearly complete genome sequences of PTV 17-SG9 and PTV 18-SG10. Together with PTV 1-13, these novel genotypes were confirmed to be members of the species Teschovirus A based on phylogenetic and genetic divergence analysis. Consequently, the species Teschovirus A now includes at least 15 PTV genotypes.PURPOSE This study aimed to analyze the choroidal characteristics in eyes with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV, affected eyes) and unaffected fellow eyes, and investigated the longitudinal changes in the choroidal structure of fellow eyes in patients with unilateral PCV. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 55 treatment-naïve patients with unilateral PCV. The choroidal thickness and vascularity between PCV affected eyes, unaffected fellow eyes, and normal control eyes were compared. Structural changes in the choroid of the fellow eyes were reviewed during follow-up. RESULTS PCV eyes had thicker subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) (p  less then  0.001), greater ratio of Haller layer to SFCT (p  less then  0.001), and lower choroidal vascularity index (p = 0.023), compared to controls. In unaffected fellow eyes, the ratio of the Haller layer to SFCT was greater (p  less then  0.001) than in controls. During a 58.91-month mean follow-up, nine (16%) fellow eyes developed new PCV. These eyes showed a greater ratio of Haller layer to SFCT at baseline (p  less then  0.001) compared to the other fellow eyes. We also observed a numerical change in the choroidal vascularity index during follow-up of fellow eyes that developed new PCV. CONCLUSION The dilation of the Haller layer was prominent in PCV eyes and fellow eyes, compared to normal controls. In the fellow eyes that developed new PCV lesions, there were changes in the choroidal vascularity during follow-up.PURPOSE The incidence and clinical significance of thyroiditis detected by molecular imaging methods is a clinical challenge that is not widely investigated in the literature. The aim of this systematic review was to analyze published data about the detection of thyroiditis on PET or PET/CT using different tracers. METHODS A comprehensive computer literature search of the Scopus, PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane library databases was conducted up to November 2019 to find relevant papers on the detection of thyroiditis by PET/CT, the metabolic appearance, and the clinical significance. RESULTS Twenty-six articles were selected and retrieved in full-text version. From the analyses of these studies, the following main findings have been found. Diffuse thyroid uptake of PET tracers is a relatively frequent event, ranging from 0.4 to 46.2%, and it is commonly related to benign disease. Thyroiditis is the most frequent reason for diffuse increased thyroid 18F-FDG uptake. Cases of malignant disease with a pattern of diffuse 18F-FDG thyroid uptake are less frequent. Preliminary studies show a possible role of thyroiditis detected by 18F-FDG PET/CT in evaluating treatment response and as a prognostic marker in oncological patients treated with immunotherapy. However, further studies are needed. CONCLUSIONS Diffuse 18F-FDG thyroid uptake is a relatively rare event commonly due to benign diseases, among which thyroiditis is the most common. The rate of neoplastic disease with diffuse 18F-FDG thyroid uptake is very low. Diffuse 18F-FDG thyroid uptake requires further investigation and clinical evaluation for the correct diagnosis. Currently, cases of diffuse thyroid uptake with non-18F-FDG radiotracer are only anecdotal.Aristotle was the first author who described the existence of abnormalities in the timing of human puberty. In the classic Greek-Roman period, Pliny the Elder and Phlegon of Tralles described the first individual cases of precocious puberty in children. During the Middle Ages, precocious puberty in the male (but not in the female) was ignored. Remdesivir purchase We present what is, to our knowledge, the first full description in European literature of male precocious puberty and its consequences in an adult. This case is included in a book of the miscellaneous genre of Spanish Renaissance literature (Jardin de Flores Curiosas) written by Antonio de Torquemada in the sixteenth century.Proline-, glutamic acid-, leucine-rich protein 1 (PELP1) is a novel estrogen receptor (ER) coregulator, demonstrated distinctive characters from other ERα coregulators, and has been suggested to be involved in metastasis of several cancers. In ERα-positive breast cancer, PELP1 overexpression enhanced ruffles and filopodium-like structure stimulated by estradiol (E2) through extranuclear cell signaling transduction hereby increased cell motility. However, whether PELP1 is also involved in extracellular matrix remodeling of ERα-positive breast cancer cells is still unknown. In this study, we investigated the role of PELP1 in E2-induced MMP-9 expression and the underlined mechanism. The results demonstrated the following E2-induced ERα-positive MCF-7 breast cancer cell MMP-9 mRNA and protein expression in a rapid response and concentration-dependent manner. Knocked down PELP1 significantly suppressed E2-induced MMP-9 expression. E2-bovine serum albumin (BSA), a large molecular membrane-impenetrable conjugate of E2, can also upregulate MMP-9 protein expression in MCF-7, and the action of E2-BSA can be abolished by PI3K inhibitor LY294002; treating MCF-7 simultaneously with PELP1-shRNA and LY294002 did not show synergetic inhibitory effect on E2-BSA-induced MMP-9 expression. Our results indicated that estrogen-induced MMP-9 expression in ER-positive breast cancer cells may be through PELP1-mediated PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.Peer-mediated interventions (PMIs) are often used to support children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to develop social skills. However, more investigation is needed to better understand the role of peers as both intervention recipients and models. Sixty-five typically developing peers who participated in a PMI for children with ASD were investigated using a randomised control trial. Play sessions of the dyads were scored using the Test of Playfulness. Results showed a significant moderate intervention effect for the peers from pre- to post-intervention; outcomes for children with ASD were not influenced by peer characteristics; and, the children demonstrated a similar pattern of play interaction. Implications for practice are discussed.Clinical Trials Registry Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry, https//www.anzctr.org.au/ (ACTRN12615000008527; Universal Trial Number U1111-1165-2708).Mercury (Hg) is a potent neurotoxin that biomagnifies within both aquatic and terrestrial food webs resulting in adverse physiological and reproductive effects on impacted wildlife populations, including songbird communities. Due to reducing conditions, wetland ecosystems promote the formation of methylmercury. Regional studies have documented elevated blood mercury concentrations in songbird species within these habitat types. The overall goal of this research was to examine spatial and seasonal patterns of Hg exposure for targeted songbird species within Sphagnum bog wetland systems and compare these patterns with adjacent upland forests in the Adirondack Park of New York State. Project sampling was conducted at study plots within four Sphagnum bog and associated upland forest sites from May - August during the 2008, 2009, and 2011 field seasons. The overall results documented (1) blood Hg concentrations were elevated in songbird species inhabiting Sphagnum bog habitats as compared to nearby upland forest species; (2) target species within each habitat type exhibited consistent species-level patterns in blood Hg concentrations at each study site; and (3) no seasonal change in blood Hg concentrations within Sphagnum bog habitats was documented, but an increasing, followed by a decreasing seasonal pattern in mercury exposure was detected for upland forest species.
