Spiny monkey orange (Strychnos spinosa Lam.) is an African endemic fruit tree that is widely consumed by humans and animals for its nutritional value. In folk medicine, different parts of S. spinosa are widely used for the management of the health and well-being of humans and livestock.

We provide a critical appraisal on the ethnobotanical uses, nutritional and pytochemical as well as the biological activities of S. spinosa.

Articles were mined from online databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, SciELO and SpringerLink. We captured research outputs that aligned with the scope of the review.

Functional damage and decreased number of EPCs are observed in the peripheral circulation of hypertensive patients, but its mechanism is not yet elucidated. Here, we show that the number of EPCs in hypertensive patients is significantly lower than that of normal population, and the cell function decreases with a higher proportion of EPCs at later stages. A decrease in autophagy is responsible for the senescence and damage of EPCs induced by AngII. Moreover, lncRNA-p21 plays a critical regulator role in EPCs' senescence and dysfunction. Here, we exploited C. elegans as a 3R-compliant in vivo model to elucidate molecular mechanisms contributing to CisPt-induced neuronal dysfunction. To this end, we monitored the impact of CisPt on various sensory functions as well as pharyngeal neurotransmission by recording electropharyngeograms (EPGs). CisPt neither affected food and odor sensation nor mechano-sensation, which involve dopaminergic and glutaminergic neurotransmission. However, CisPt reduced serotonin-regulated pharyngeal pumping activity independent of changes in the morphology of related neurons. CisPt-mediated alterations in EPGs were fully rescued by addition of serotonin (5-HT) (≤ 2 mM). Moreover, the CisPt-induced pharyngeal injury was prevented by co-incubation with the clinically approved serotonin re-uptake inhibitory drug duloxetine. A protective effect of 5-HT was also observed with respect to CisPt-mediated impairment of another 5-HT-dependent process, the egg laying activity. We have recently reported that 12-weeks of dietary rapamycin (Rap, 14 ppm), with or without metformin (Met, 1000 ppm), increased plasma glucose and OA severity in male Dunkin Hartley (DH) guinea pigs, a model of naturally occurring, age-related OA. The purpose of the current study was to determine if increased OA severity after dietary Rap and Rap+Met was accompanied by impaired skeletal muscle mitochondrial function. Mitochondrial respiration and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) emissions were evaluated in permeabilized muscle fibers via high-resolution respirometry and fluorometry using either a saturating bolus or titration of ADP. Rap and Rap+Met decreased complex I (CI)-linked respiration and tended to increase ADP sensitivity, consistent with previous findings in patients with end-stage OA. The decrease in CI-linked respiration was accompanied with lower CI protein abundance. Rap and Rap+Met did not change mitochondrial H2O2 emissions. There were no differences between mitochondrial function in Rap versus Rap+Met suggesting that Rap was likely driving the change in mitochondrial function. Forty older adults (20 women) were randomly allocated in a parallel-group design to receive 0.5 L per day of HRW (15 ppm of hydrogen) or control drink (0 ppm of hydrogen) during a 6-month intervention period. MicroRNA-124 (miR-124)-3p-overexpressed lentivirus was constructed and injected via the intracerebroventricular method before CPB. Morris Water Maze test (WMW) and the Open-Field test (OFT) were used to measure behavior changes, data shows decline of cognitive function of rats after CPB. PND rats expressed higher Aβ and p-Tau Protein by using immunohistochemistry (IHC) analyses and Enzyme-Linked Immune Sorbent Assay (ELISA). Moreover, the results of IHC, ELISA, Western Blot analysis (WB) and Terminal-deoxynucleotidyl Transferase Mediated Nick End Labeling Assay (TUNEL) showed CPB procedure induced inflammation and apoptosis in rats with PND. The data also revealed the protective function of miR-124-3p overexpression against PND in relieving inflammation, cell apoptosis, and alleviating repaired cognitive function. Moreover, miR-124-3p was predicted by directly targeting LPIN1. This study gives a novel viewpoint that miR-124-3p could improve the state of PND via modulating LPIN1, therefore providing a new strategy for preventing and treating PND in a preclinical application.
