Understanding bat habitat use and how bat activity changes in response to differing habitats across time and space is critical in developing and implementing effective bat conservation actions. To investigate the utility of geographic information systems (GIS) in studying bat habitat interactions, habitat delineations and bioacoustic sampling were conducted along two transects in Chautauqua County, NY (USA) from mid-May until the end of August 2013. Surveys were vehicular, and driven between 29 and 32 kmph in order to match bats' flying speed. They were conducted starting 30 min after sunset on nights where the temperature was greater than 13 °C. In total, twenty surveys were completed, and 1248 bat calls were identified to species. Mixed models regression analysis revealed significant interactions among all of the species of bat analyzed in the model. The model was supported with a secondary analysis comparing bat call density with land cover. This study supports the hypothesis that bats forage in different habitats at the species level and indicates the importance of forested areas to bats. Additionally, the methodology for this study has the potential to gather large data sets in a short period of time, while collecting data on several species of bat at once and has been shown to be useful in identifying important habitat features for bats using bioacoustics and geospatial analysis. Since the data has been collected following state guidelines, the dataset and its analysis establish a baseline for future data collection campaigns and in performing a similar analysis for other regions within the state of New York or areas worldwide.Seasonal hypoxia, as an increasingly recognized environmental issue, frequently occurred in marine ranching from northern Yellow Sea, China. Although microorganisms play an important ecological role in marine ecosystems, but little is known on the response mechanism of microbial community to seasonal hypoxia in marine ranching. A total of 132 seawater samples and 47 sediment samples were collected from the marine ranching, both in the death disaster zone of sea cucumbers and the non-disaster zone, and in different months. 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing was used to explore the microbial community and its influencing factors. The results showed that the stratification in community composition and dissolved oxygen content appeared in August. The Alpha diversity in seawater was higher in summer than in winter, and significant differences in Beta diversity appeared between the death disaster zone of sea cucumbers and the non-disaster zone in sediments. In addition, environmental effects explained more of the variation in bacterial community composition in seawater as compared with spatial effects did, whereas, sedimentary bacterial communities were more closely related to spatial effects. The present results could provide fundamental data for understanding the response mechanism of the microbial community to seasonal hypoxia in marine ranching and are of great significance for the management and protection of marine ranching.Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (eCO2) greatly impacts greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of CH4 and N2O from rice fields. Although eCO2 generally stimulates GHG emissions in the short term ( less then 5 years) experiments, the responses to long-term (≥10 years) eCO2 remain poorly known. Here we show, through a series of experiments and meta-analysis, that the eCO2 does not necessarily increase CH4 and N2O emissions from rice paddies. In an experiment of free-air CO2 enrichment for 13-15 years, CH4 and N2O emissions were decreased by 11-54% and 33-54%, respectively. The decline of CH4 emissions was related to the reduction of CH4 production and enhancement of CH4 oxidation via raising soil Eh and soil-water interface [O2] under eCO2. Moreover, the eCO2 significantly decreased NH4+-N content, suggesting a reduction of soil nitrification and thereby N2O emissions. A meta-analysis showed that CH4 and N2O emissions were stimulated under short-term eCO2 while reduced under long-term eCO2. The eCO2-induced increase in yield and biomass and the ratio of mcrA genes/pmoA genes declined with eCO2 duration, indicating an eCO2-stimulation of methanogenesis lower than that of methanotrophy over time by fewer increased substrates. Upscaling the results of meta-analysis, the eCO2-induced global paddy CH4 and N2O emissions shifted from an increase (+0.17 Pg CO2-eq year-1) in the short term into a decrease (-0.11 Pg CO2-eq year-1) in the long term. Our findings suggest that the effect of eCO2 on GHG emissions changes over time, and this should be considered in future climate change research.Invasive alien species (IAS) have become a major threat to ecosystems worldwide. From an evolutionary ecological perspective, they allow teasing apart the relative contributions of plasticity and evolutionary divergence in driving rapid phenotypic diversification. When IAS spread across extensive geographic ranges, climatic variation may represent a source of strong natural selection through overwinter mortality and summer heat stress. This could favour local adaptation, i.e., evolutionary divergence of certain traits. IAS, however, are likely to show plasticity in survival-related traits, and environmental fluctuation in their new distribution range could favour the maintenance of this pre-existing phenotypic plasticity. By contrast, sexually selected traits are more likely to undergo evolutionary divergence when components of sexual selection differ geographically. Here, using data from a common-garden rearing experiment of Western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis Baird and Girard, 1853) from five populations across the species' invasive range in China, we show that invasive mosquitofish have retained plasticity in key physiological (thermal tolerances), morphological and life-history traits even 100 years after their introduction to China, but exhibit heritable population differences in several sexually selected traits, including the shape of the male copulatory organ. Adaptive plasticity of traits linked to immediate survival in different thermal environments-while likely responsible for the species' extraordinary invasion success-could slow down genetic evolution. Several sexually selected traits could diverge geographically and show rapid evolutionary change, e.g., because climate alters selective landscapes arising from mate competition as an indirect consequence of variation in overwinter mortality.Natural ecosystems globally have been disrupted by anthropogenic activities, and the current biodiversity extinction rate exceeds the natural extinction rate by 1,000-fold. Protected areas (PAs) help insulate samples of biodiversity from these human-induced threats; however, assessments of the factors threatening biodiversity in PAs are scarce in South Asia - one of the key global epicentres of human population growth. Here, by synthesizing published literature and analysing the current configuration of the PA estate, we discuss the trends and biases in existing knowledge, identify research gaps, measure the level of PA coverage and growth patterns, and discuss the threats to South Asian biodiversity inside PAs. We showed that published studies focused mainly on documenting species distributions in PAs, were heavily biased toward vertebrates, and had been mostly conducted in India. Nearly 70% of studies focused on the distribution of organisms, while only 9% performed conservation assessments or devised strategies to manage PAs; 70% of studies cover vertebrates, while only two studies focused on marine fauna; 50% of studies focused on India, with only a handful from Afghanistan. Only three (Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka) of the eight countries already meet a terrestrial PA representation target of 17%, while no country meets a marine representation target of 10%. Most PAs were very small, with nearly 80% below 100 km2, and 22% below 1 km2. We identified that South Asian PAs are facing a broad range of anthropogenic threats - about three in five studies reported threats inside protected areas. Due to extensive anthropogenic pressures, biodiversity in South Asia is facing an existential crisis, and society-wide collaborative efforts are needed to arrest and reverse the declines. We hope this review will stimulate efforts to capitalise on the opportunity for efficient PA growth in the region on the eve of the post-2020 global biodiversity targets.Different wetland plants were evaluated regarding their potential to be used in further green biorefining platforms to produce soluble protein and cellulose-textile fibers. The results show a higher protein content in the plants grown in treatment wetland conditions, compared with the same species grown in natural conditions, and diverse effect on the content of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, depending on the plant species, more than the growing environment. The TW biomass did not represent a risk regarding accumulation of heavy metals, named Pb, Cd, and Cr, since the studied plants did not present it in their tissues, neither in the roots nor in the leaves. The results regarding cellulose quality of the TW plants showed positive results, having values of molar mass distributions and degrees of polymerization that suggest a suitability to be considered for cellulose-fiber textiles studies. This is one of the first approaches, in the TW field, to establish a new criterion for selecting plant species to be planted in the system, aiming at recovering resources and use them as inputs for biorefineries and sustainable biobased products.Volatile pollutants from former industrial sites can degrade the buildings' indoor air quality that were built after the industrial activities. Since 2010, environmental assessments have been conducted in French establishments hosting sensitive populations identified as being on or near potentially contaminated former industrial sites. These projects are based on historical studies traditionally carried out as part of managing contaminated sites, to determine which substances should be analyzed. They pinpoint former activities likely to have stored or used pollutants. We show that the historical information collected is not effective in targeting sites with increased probability of mercury being present in soil gases. Environmental history has demonstrated the existence of large-scale artisanal contamination, both prior to and concomitant with the industrial era. Classic historical studies would not take into account artisanal activities, which are less documented than industrial activities. We carried out additional research for three schools located in three different Parisian districts. Although information on activities which could have emitted mercury was relatively imprecise (in terms of location, type and duration of activities) and uncertainties exist about the completeness of the archival documents available, our investigations identified several mercury-using activities that had not been identified during the classic historical study. Consequently, although a more extensive historical research improves knowledge about the presence of potential mercury-using activities, our study shows that a systematic analysis of mercury as part of the assessment of establishments hosting sensitive populations remains relevant.
