Medial open wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO) is a well-established treatment for osteoarthritis of the medial tibiofemoral compartment. Surgical site infection (SSI) after MOWHTO is a devastating complication that may require further surgery. In this study, we aimed to identify the risk factors for infection after MOWHTO over 1 to 4 years of follow-up.
Fifty-nine patients who underwent MOWHTO combined with knee arthroscopic surgery were included in this prospective study. Artificial bone grafts were used in all cases. Possible risk factors, including sex, age, body mass index (BMI), underlying disease, hospitalization length, correction angle, and surgery time, were recorded. Both univariate and multivariate analysis were used.
A total of 59 patients who underwent 61 operations were included. Eleven patients (18.0%) were reported to have SSI. Univariate analysis showed that smoking and diabetes mellitus were positively associated with SSI. Multivariate analysis showed that smoking and age were positively associated with SSI. Three patients (4.9%) were reported to suffer from deep SSI, requiring surgical debridement, all of whom were male smokers.
Smoking, diabetes mellitus, and old age were identified to be possible risk factors of SSI after MOWHTO. These findings are common risk factors of SSI after orthopedic surgery according to the literature. Patient selection should be performed cautiously, and postoperative prognosis for MOWHTO should be carefully explained to patients who smoke.

These alterations improve fruit quality and make fruit desirable for human consumption. However, fruit over-ripening results in large losses of fruit crops. This problem is overcome by applying 1-methylcyclopropene to the fruits, due to its capacity to block the ethylene receptors, suppressing fruit ripening. In this study, treatments with only 1-methylcyclopropene and both 1-methylcyclopropene and methyl jasmonate were administered to observe whether exogenous methyl jasmonate can improve the metabolite levels in fruits with blocked ethylene receptors. Fruit pericarps were analyzed at 4, 10, and 21 days after harvest (DAH) and compared with untreated fruits. The post-harvest treatments affected primary metabolites (sugars, organic acids, amino acids, and fatty acids) and secondary metabolites (carotenoids, tocopherols, and phytosterols). However, the lipid metabolism of the tomatoes was most impacted by the exogenous jasmonate. Fatty acids, carotenoids, tocopherols, and phytosterols showed a delay in their production at 4 and 10 DAH. Conversely, at 21 DAH, these non-polar metabolites exhibited an important improvement in their accumulation.This study tests organizational trust as the psychosocial mechanism that explains how healthy organizational practices and team resources predict multilevel performance in organizations and teams, respectively. In our methodology, we collect data in a sample of 890 employees from 177 teams and their immediate supervisors from 31 Spanish companies. Our results from the multilevel analysis show two independent processes predicting organizational performance (return on assets, ROA) and performance ratings by immediate supervisors, operating at the organizational and team levels, respectively. We have found evidence for a theoretical and functional quasi-isomorphism. First, based on social exchange theory, we found evidence for our prediction that when organizations implement healthy practices and teams provide resources, employees trust their top managers (vertical trust) and coworkers (horizontal trust) and try to reciprocate these benefits by improving their performance. Second, (relationships among) constructs are similar at different levels of analysis, which may inform HRM officers and managers about which type of practices and resources can help to enhance trust and improve performance in organizations. The present study contributes to the scarce research on the role of trust at collective (i.e., organizational and team) levels as a psychological mechanism that explains how organizational practices and team resources are linked to organizational performance.
Dengue fever is one of the most important arboviral diseases. Surface temperature versus dengue burden in tropical environments can provide valuable information that can be adapted in future measurements to improve health policies.
A methodological approach using Daymet-V3 provided estimates of daily weather parameters. A Python code developed by us extracted the median temperature from the urban regions of Colima State (207.3 km
) in Mexico. JointPoint regression models computed the mean temperature-adjusted average annual percentage of change (AAPC) in disability-adjusted life years (DALY) rates (per 100,000) due to dengue in Colima State among school-aged (5-14 years old) children.
Primary outcomes were average temperature in urban areas and cumulative dengue burden in DALYs in the school-aged population. A model from 1990 to 2017 medium surface temperature with DALY rates was performed. The increase in DALYs rate was 64% (95% CI, 44-87%), and it seemed to depend on the 2000-2009 estimates (AAPC = 185%, 95% CI 18-588).

Pharmacological ascorbate (P-AscH-), i.e., large amounts given intravenously (IV), generates significant fluxes of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), resulting in the killing of PDACs but not normal cells. Recent studies have demonstrated that P-AscH- radio-sensitizes PDAC but is a radioprotector to normal cells and tissues. Several mechanisms have been hypothesized to explain the dual roles of P-AscH- in radiation-induced toxicity including the activation of nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), RelB, as well as changes in bioenergetic profiles. We have found that P-AscH- in conjunction with radiation increases Nrf2 in both cancer cells and normal cells. Although P-AscH- with radiation decreases RelB in cancer cells vs. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/cct128930.html normal cells, the knockout of RelB does not radio-sensitize PDACs. Cellular bioenergetic profiles demonstrate that P-AscH- with radiation increases the ATP demand/production rate (glycolytic and oxidative phosphorylation) in both PDACs and normal cells. Knocking out catalase results in P-AscH- radio-sensitization in PDACs. In a phase I trial where P-AscH- was included as an adjuvant to the standard of care, short-term survivors had higher catalase levels in tumor tissue, compared to long-term survivors. These data suggest that P-AscH- radio-sensitizes PDACs through increased peroxide flux. One of the characteristics of COVID-19 is that the symptom, severity, and mortality of the disease differ by age. Thus, when the vaccination supply is limited, age-dependent vaccination priority strategy should be implemented to minimize the incidences and mortalities. In this study, we developed an age-structured model for describing the transmission dynamics of COVID-19, including vaccination. Using the model and actual epidemiological data in Korea, we estimated the infection probability for each age group under different levels of social distancing implemented in Korea and investigated the effective age-dependent vaccination strategies to reduce the confirmed cases and fatalities of COVID-19. We found that, in a lower level of social distancing, vaccination priority for the age groups with the highest transmission rates will reduce the incidence mostly, but, in higher levels of social distancing, prioritizing vaccination for the elderly age group reduces the infection incidences more effectively. To reduce mortalities, vaccination priority for the elderly age group is the best strategy in all scenarios of levels of social distancing. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of vaccine supply and efficacy on the reduction in incidence and mortality.Chronic neuroinflammation is a pathological condition of numerous central nervous system (CNS) diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and many others. Neuroinflammation is characterized by the microglia activation and concomitant production of pro-inflammatory cytokines leading to an increasing neuronal cell death. The decreased neuroinflammation could be obtained by using natural compounds, including flavonoids known to modulate the inflammatory responses. Among flavonoids, quercetin possess multiple pharmacological applications including anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, antiapoptotic and anti-thrombotic activities, widely demonstrated in both in vitro and in vivo studies. In this review, we describe the recent findings about the neuroprotective action of quercetin by acting with different mechanisms on the microglial cells of CNS. The ability of quercetin to influence microRNA expression represents an interesting skill in the regulation of inflammation, differentiation, proliferation, apoptosis and immune responses. Moreover, in order to enhance quercetin bioavailability and capacity to target the brain, we discuss an innovative drug delivery system. In summary, this review highlighted an important application of quercetin in the modulation of neuroinflammation and prevention of neurological disorders.This study describes the chemical composition, antitumor, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities of the plant Thymus algeriensis Boiss. Essential oils (EOs) were collected in different periods (before, during, and after flowering stage) from the El-Guetfa region, M'sila, Algeria. The EOs extraction was achieved using three distinguishing techniques hydro (Clevenger trap), steam, and microwave distillations, targeting different aerial parts of the plant (stems, flowers, and leaves). The EOs chemical components were estimated using GC-FID and GC-MS apparatuses. The resulting yield of the extracted oil was moderate and ranged between 0.84 and 1.53% (wt/vol). In total, eighty-five components were identified, in which the oxygenated monoterpenes family formed the main portion, starting from 40.56 up to 70.66%. The obtained essential oil was dominated by five major components that varied from low to quite moderate percentages camphor (17.45-32.56%), borneol (11.16-22.2%), camphene (7.53-12.86%), 1.8-cineole (5.16-11.
