The 'Optimized Prevention Rank' have indicated that the lack of social awareness along with lack of social distancing and high susceptibility have contributed to the increasing number of containments of COVID-19 cases. The rankings of the wards would no doubt provide the policy makers a basis to control further spread of the disease or delay a second wave. Since effective antiviral drugs are far away, the application of our approach would save the lives of many people, especially the poor and underprivileged. With the emergence of new pathogens like coronavirus disease 2019 and the prevalence of cancer as one of the leading causes of mortality globally, the effort to develop appropriate materials to address these challenges is a critical research area. Researchers around the world are investigating new types of materials and biological systems to fight against various diseases that affect humans and animals. Carbon nanostructures with their properties of straightforward functionalization, capability for drug loading, biocompatibility, and antiviral properties have become a major focus of biomedical researchers. However, reducing toxicity, enhancing biocompatibility, improving dispersibility, and enhancing water solubility have been challenging for carbon-based biomedical systems. The goal of this article is to provide a review on the latest progress involving the use of carbon nanostructures, namely fullerenes, graphene, and carbon nanotubes, for drug delivery, cancer therapy, and antiviral applications.
To describe a case of asymmetric optic disc edema presenting as the initial ocular feature of POEMS (Polyneuropathy, Organomegaly, Endocrinopathy, Monoclonal gammopathy, Skin changes) syndrome.

A 29-year-old female patient presented with 3 weeks history of blurred vision, proptosis, and peripheral neuropathy as well as hypothyroidism. Fundoscopy revealed optic disc edema associated with visual loss in the left eye. Following a computed tomography (CT) scan and a positron emission tomography/CT (PET/CT) scan which respectively revealed hepatomegaly and multiple osteosclerotic lesions, as well as laboratory findings of monoclonal gammopathy and elevated vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels, she was diagnosed with POEMS syndrome. After treatment with an autologous stem cell transplant, the optic disc edema and blurred vision resolved.

The most reported ocular manifestation of POEMS syndrome, a rare and complex multisystem disorder, is bilateral optic disc edema that typically occurs in older males. Therefore, this report presents an uncommon case of asymmetric optic disc edema in a younger, female patient.

To describe a rare case of racemose hemangioma which developed spontaneous macular macroaneurysm (MA) rupture and vitreaous hemorrhage.

A 29-year-old healthy asian female visited our hospital and a racemose hemangioma was found in the left eye. At presentation, the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 30/20 in her left eye. At 9 years after the first visit, MA-like lesion was noted in the macular area. After that, vitreous and subretinal hemorrhage appeared in the left eye. The patient underwent simultaneous vitrectomy and cataract surgery, but vitreous re-hemorrhage occurred two days after the operation. To avoid re-hemorrhage, silicone oil (SO) tamponade was added in the second vitrectomy. Two years after the second operation, SO was removed and postoperative BCVA in the left eye was 20/200 without re-bleeding in the vitreous.

Although retinal hemorrhages have been reported in the patients with a racemose hemangioma, in our case the macular MA rupture occurred at 9 years after the first visit. Congenital retinal arteriovenous anastomosis can show a change in vascular shape in some cases, thus it is important to observe carefully.

Although both conservative and surgical treatment strategies have been employed for the treatment of CR, effective procedures have not been established till date. In this study, the effects of MSC-CM on CR were investigated. Bone marrow-derived MSCs of rats (rMSCs) were cultured until 80% confluent, cultured in serum-free conditioned medium for 48 h; the collected medium was defined as MSC-CM. Osteogenesis, chondrogenesis, and angiogenesis-related gene expression in rMSCs cultured with MSC-CM was evaluated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. A rat CR model was used for animal studies, in which CR occurred after mandibular distraction osteogenesis for 10 days. MSC-CM was injected via the tail vein and quantitative and qualitative evaluations were performed by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and histology. MSC-CM enhanced osteogenesis-, chondrogenesis-, and angiogenesis-related gene expression in rMSCs. Micro-CT showed CR in control groups; however, it was observed to be improved in the MSC-CM group. Histologically, an enlarged cartilage layer was seen in the MSC-CM group, while cartilage layers had almost thinned or disappeared in control groups. These results indicate that MSC-CM improved CR.Zinc titanates are compounds that have shown great application versatility, including in the field of semiconductors. Solid state reactions, the polymeric precursor method and the hydrothermal method are the most mentioned synthesis of these compounds in the literature. In the present work, we use microwave assisted hydrothermal method (MAH) to synthesize zinc titanate and evaluate its potential for solar cell applications through structural and optical characterization techniques. The synthesized samples were also subjected to a variable temperature heat treatment in the range of 500 °C-800 °C. The analysis showed that the crystallization of the material starts at 500 °C and that samples submitted to temperatures of 600 °C-800 °C showed the formation of two phases of zinc titanates, being a cubic phase of ZnTiO3, considered rare in the literature, predominant up to a temperature of 800 °C. The optical characterization, based on the techniques of photoluminescence spectroscopy and UV-Visible spectroscopy, showed that the photoluminescent activity and the energy of the band gap increased with the increase of the temperature of the heat treatment, having the highest response in 700 °C, facts that can be linked to the predominant formation of the cubic phase of ZnTiO3 and simultaneous of the cubic and rhombohedral phases of ZnTiO3 at 700 and 800 °C. Finally, we highlight as the most important results, the fact that it was possible to obtain these titanates at a temperature lower than that reported in the literature, and that the heat-treated sample at 500 °C is the one with the lowest energy expenditure to be synthesized and the one with the greatest potential for application in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC's).A previous report shows that poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PIPAAm) gel grafted onto poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) (PI-PDMS) surfaces with large PIPAAm graft density (Lar-PI-PDMS), is prepared by using electron beam irradiation, demonstrating that applied mechanical stretching affects properties of the Lar-PI-PDMS surface. However, the influence of PIPAAm graft density on the properties of PI-PDMS surfaces and their stability are not understood. To provide insight into these points, the properties of PI-PDMS surfaces with low PIPAAm graft density (Low-PI-PDMS) surfaces with stretched (stretch ratio = 20%) and unstretched states were examined as stretchable temperature-responsive cell culture surface using contact angle measurement and cell attachment/detachment assays, compared to those with Lar-PI-PDMS, as previously reported. Long-term contact angle measurements (61 days) for unstretched Low-PI-PDMS and Lar-PI-PDMS surfaces indicated that the cross-linked structure of the grafted PIPAAm gel suppressed hydrophThus, PI-PDMS may be utilized as a stretchable temperature-responsive cell culture surface without significant hydrophobic recovery.Modified titanium dioxide (m-TiO2NPs) is a novel photocatalytic nanomaterial. selleck chemical Its level of toxicity was evaluated to be used in photodynamic treatment for cervical cancer. In the toxicity studies (Irwin test, acute and repeated doses (10 days)), female albino Swiss Webster (CFW) mice, 28 days old were used; the m-TiO2NPs was administered in single 300, 600 and 5,000 mg/kg of body weight (b.w) doses injected in the peritoneal zone. No adverse events or mortality were produced. Daily intraperitoneal doses of 300 and 600 mg/kg b.w every 24 h for 10 days did not produce adverse effects or mortality. There were no abnormal clinical signs or behavioral changes (neurological or physiological) in any of the mice. All organs exhibited normal architecture, and histological studies determined that m-TiO2NPs does not produce changes in the cells or tissues. Based on the test results, it is concluded that the m-TiO2NPs has not a toxic effect in doses equal to or less than 5,000 mg/kg b.w.
Chronic rhinosinusitis allergy (CRA) is a disease that is commonly found in children and is mostly caused by allergy to house dust mites (HDM). The use of HDM immunotherapy can be considered in children with allergies.

Analyzing the impact of mite immunotherapy on disease burden in Indonesian children with CRA.

A randomized control trial study was conducted to participants in 2 groups, namely the immunotherapy group (n = 25) and the non-immunotherapy group (n = 25). Participants were given HDM immunotherapy for 14 weeks, which was given once per week. Participants during therapy were evaluated for rhinosinusitis symptoms and measured their immunity status (specific IgE), sleep quality (SDSC), quality of life (SN5), and family coping (F-COPES) pre-post therapy. Statistical analysis used in this study included paired t-test, Wilcoxon test, independent t-test, or Mann Whitney test with
< 0.05.

The value of specific IgE in the immunotherapy group was 4.12 ± 7.75 kU/l (pre-test) and 1.52 ± 2.42 kU/l ignificant difference in the F-COPES value (
= 0.129).

The administration of HDM immunotherapy can improve the participant's immunity, quality of life, and sleep disorder.

Despite of significant efforts in recent years in glioblastoma research, the clinical efficacy of existing medical intervention is still limited and very few potential diagnostic markers are available. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) that lacks protein-coding capabilities were previously thought to be "junk sequences" in mammalian genomes are quite indispensible epigenetic regulators that can positively or negatively regulate gene expression and nuclear architecture, with significant roles in the initiation and development of tumors. Nevertheless, the precise mechanism of these distortedly expressed lncRNAs in glioblastoma pathogenesis is not yet fully understood. Since the advent of high-throughput sequencing technologies, more and more research have elucidated that lncRNAs are one of the most promising prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for glioblastoma.
