fer for patellar instability are required.
The results revealed that 100% of papers evaluated lacked adequate return-to-play guidelines. Moreover, timelines significantly varied among studies. More clearly defined return-to-play guidelines after tibial tubercle transfer for patellar instability are required.
Shoulder pain is common, with a lifetime prevalence of up to 67%. Evidence is conflicting in relation to imaging findings and pain in the shoulder. Sonoelastography can be used to estimate tissue stiffness and may be a clinically relevant technique for diagnosing and monitoring tendon healing.
To evaluate changes in supraspinatus tendon stiffness using strain elastography (SEL) and associations with changes in patient-reported outcomes, supraspinatus tendon thickness, and grade of tendinopathy after 12 weeks of unilateral shoulder exercises in patients with supraspinatus tendinopathy.
Controlled laboratory study.
A total of 23 patients with unilateral clinical supraspinatus tendinopathy performed 12 weeks of "standard care" exercises. At baseline and follow-up, supraspinatus tendon stiffness was measured bilaterally using SEL and compared with tendinopathy grading on magnetic resonance imaging scans and tendon thickness measured using conventional ultrasound. Patient-reported outcome measures includedm, structural changes in supraspinatus tendons could not be visualized using SEL, indicating that a longer time span should be expected in order to observe structural changes, which should be considered before return to sports. Subgrouping based on stage of tendinopathy may also be important in order to evaluate changes over time with SEL among patients with supraspinatus tendinopathy.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are debilitating injuries frequently suffered by athletes. ACL reconstruction is indicated to restore knee stability and allow patients to return to prior levels of athletic performance. While existing literature suggests that patient-reported outcomes are similar between bone-patellar tendon-bone (BTB) and hamstring tendon (HT) autografts, there is less information comparing return-to-sport (RTS) rates between the 2 graft types.
To compare RTS rates among athletes undergoing primary ACL reconstruction using a BTB versus HT autograft.
Systematic review; Level of evidence, 4.
The MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched, and studies that reported on RTS after primary ACL reconstruction using a BTB or HT autograft were included. Studies that utilized ACL repair techniques, quadriceps tendon autografts, graft augmentation, double-bundle autografts, allografts, or revision ACL reconstruction were excluded. RTS information was extracted and analyzng BTB autografts demonstrated higher overall RTS rates when compared with HT autografts. However, BTB and HT autografts had similar rates of return to preinjury levels of performance and rerupture rates. Less than half of the athletes were able to return to preinjury sport levels after ACL reconstruction with either an HT or BTB autograft.
There is a high incidence of hand and wrist injuries in athletes participating in collegiate sports, but there is little information published characterizing them.
To characterize hand and wrist injuries in collegiate athletes using a large national database.
Descriptive epidemiology study.
This retrospective cross-sectional analysis was designed using data from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Injury Surveillance Program database to identify hand and wrist injuries (exclusive of any radial or ulnar fractures) in male and female collegiate athletes participating in NCAA Division I, II, and III sports from 2004 to 2015. Descriptive analyses were performed on stratified data to examine the associations between these injuries and sport, event type, and sex.
Men's ice hockey (8.25 per 10,000 athlete-exposures [AEs]) and women's ice hockey (8.21 per 10,000 AEs) had the highest rate of hand and wrist injuries in all exposures. AZD1390 price In every sport except women's gymnastics (
= .107), injuri injuries with more frequency and severity. Injuries occurred more commonly during competition. While the majority of injuries were minor and did not require surgery, certain sports conferred a much higher risk of significant injuries requiring a surgical intervention.
For high-tensile strength sutures, past research has largely focused on mechanical properties or bacterial adherence across various manufacturers.
This study investigated high-tensile strength sutures with different shapes but otherwise identical composition. The purpose was to evaluate the differences between high-tensile strength suture wire and suture tape relative to bacterial adherence and bacterial retention after washout.
Controlled laboratory study.
Sutures were implanted in dorsal air pouches of 72 BALB/cJ mice. Experimental pouches were inoculated with
; no bacteria were used in the control conditions. The mice were randomized into 3 groups group 1 underwent suture extraction 7 days after implantation; group 2 underwent an irrigation procedure, followed by immediate suture extraction on day 7; and group 3 underwent an irrigation procedure on day 7, with delayed suture extraction on day 14 after implantation. The sutures were evaluated using confocal microscopy; electron microscopy; and spe .0219]; group 3, 0.1707 ± 0.0205 vs 0.0191 ± 0.0053 [
< .0001]). No bacterial growth occurred in the control conditions. Histological assessment revealed only mild inflammation in the control groups as compared with more severe responses in the experimental groups at all time points.
FiberTape was associated with increased bacterial adhesion as well as retention as compared with FiberWire in an in vivo murine wound model.
This study demonstrates that suture design influences the occurrence of and ability to clear surgical infection and must be considered when selecting high-tensile strength sutures in a clinical setting.

SFT presents as a slow growing, often asymptomatic mass, generally affecting middle-aged adults regardless of the sex. We report a rare case of an 18-year-old man referred to our institution to perform computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to investigate a pelvic mass incidentally discovered at abdominal ultrasound examination. A well circumscribed, heterogenous and hypervascular lesion was described at imaging, with absence of calcifications, hemorrhage, necrosis nor cystic degeneration. The mass removal was performed via the Da Vinci-assisted robotic surgery. Histopathological evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of SFT. CT and MRI can aid the identification of SFT, providing useful information which needs to be supported by histopathological analysis.
Older adults with multiple chronic conditions (MCC) rely heavily on caregivers for assistance with care. However, we know little about their psychosocial experiences and their needs for support in managing MCC. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of caregivers of older adults living in the community with MCC.
This qualitative study was a secondary analysis of previously collected data from caregivers in Ontario and Alberta, Canada. Participants included caregivers of older adults (65 years and older) with three or more chronic conditions. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Interview transcripts were coded and analyzed using Thorne's interpretive description approach.
Most of the 47 caregiver participants were female (76.6%), aged 65 years of age or older (61.7%), married (87.2%) and were spouses to the care recipient (68.1%). Caregivers' experiences of caring for community-living older adults with MCC were complex and included (a) dealing with the demal participation, social inclusion, and community support and health services. The importance of effective communication cannot be overestimated during a pandemic. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency national 1339 hotline has been in operation since the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus outbreak in 2016. The hotline is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and provides accurate, reliable information based upon the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency guidelines in response to queries. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the 1339 hotline received callers' questions about symptoms and the implications of their actions regarding the epidemic. Through the 1339 hotline, callers received the up-to-date information that enabled them to protect themselves as well as others from COVID-19. This public service may have influenced on reduced risk of virus transmission in Korea.
This study aimed to assess medication use in pregnant women in Malaysia by measuring use, knowledge, awareness, and beliefs about medications.
This was an observational, cross-sectional study involving a total of 447 pregnant women who attended the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic, Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL), Malaysia. A validated, self-administered questionnaire was used to collect participant data.
Most of pregnant women had taken medication during pregnancy and more than half of them (52.8%) showed a poor level of knowledge about the medication use during pregnancy. Eighty-three percent had a poor level of awareness and 56.5% had negative beliefs. Age and education level were significantly associated with the level of knowledge regarding medication use during pregnancy. Multiparous pregnant women, and pregnant women from rural areas were observed to have a higher level of awareness compared with those who lived in urban areas. Use of medication during pregnancy was determined to be significantly asscy.
This study aimed to identify differences in drinking norms, heavy drinking, and motives between types of drinkers (abstainers, solitary, and social drinkers) in a representative sample of Korean adults.
An online survey of people registered on the electoral roll were randomly invited to be part of the "National Korean Drinking Culture Study" conducted in 2018 (
= 3,015). Participants included 1,532 men and 1,469 women aged 19-60 years. Questions included the number of times they drank in the last month, what they drank, and the volume drank. The amount of pure alcohol consumed was calculated. Drinking norms, motives, and types were determined in the survey questions.
Solitary drinkers were more likely to be divorced or separated, less educated, and marginally employed. Solitary drinking peaked in those in their 30s (18.5%) and social drinkers in their 50s (68.1%). Solitary drinkers drank more frequently compared with social drinkers (6.1 vs. 3.6 times per month,
< 0.001), and consumed a significantly larger quantity of alcohol (69.
