0001), and lung primary patients had worse OS (p = 0.032). Higher BED values, the number of hepatic lesions, and larger GTV were not predictive of local control, radiographic response, or OS. 21% of patients suffered from treatment toxicity, but no grade ≥3 toxicity was reported.

Relatively low-dose SBRT for liver metastases demonstrated efficacy and minimal toxicity, even for patients with large tumors or multiple lesions. This approach may be useful for patients in whom higher-dose therapy is contraindicated or associated with high risk for toxicity. OS depends largely on the primary tumor.

This study evaluated a convolutional neural network (CNN) for automatically delineating the liver on contrast-enhanced or non-contrast-enhanced CT, making comparisons with a commercial automated technique (MIM Maestro®).

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy requires careful labor-intensive planning involving delineation of the target and organs on CT or MR images to ensure delivery of the effective dose to the target while avoiding organs at risk.

Contrast-enhanced planning CT images from 101 pancreatic cancer cases and accompanying mask images showing manually-delineated liver contours were used to train the CNN to segment the liver. The trained CNN then performed liver segmentation on a further 20 contrast-enhanced and 15 non-contrastenhanced CT image sets, producing three-dimensional mask images of the liver.

For both contrast-enhanced and non-contrast-enhanced images, the mean Dice similarity coefficients between CNN segmentations and ground-truth manual segmentations were significantly higher than those between ground-truth and MIM Maestro software (p < 0.001). buy A2ti-2 Although mean CT values of the liver were higher on contrast-enhanced than on non-contrast-enhanced CT, there were no significant differences in the Hausdorff distances of the CNN segmentations, indicating that the CNN could successfully segment the liver on both image types, despite being trained only on contrast-enhanced images.

Our results suggest that a CNN can perform highly accurate automated delineation of the liver on CT images, irrespective of whether the CT images are contrast-enhanced or not.

In this study, we investigated the effect of rectal gas on the dose distribution of prostate cancer using a volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) treatment planning.

The first is the original structure set, clinical target volume (CTV), the rectum, and the bladder used clinically. The second is a structure set (simulated gas structure set) in which the overlapping part of the rectum and PTV is overwritten with Hounsfield Unit -950 as gas. Full arc and limited gantry rotation angle with VMAT were the two arcs. The VMAT of the full arc was 181°-179° in the clockwise (CW) direction and 179°-181° in the counterclockwise (CCW) direction. Three partial arcs with a limited gantry rotation angle were created 200°-160 °CW and 160°-200 °CCW; 220°-140 °CW and 140°-220 °CCW; and finally, 240°-120 °CW and 120°-240 °CCW. The evaluation items were dose difference, distance to agreement, and gamma analysis.

In the CTV, the full arc was the treatment planning technique with the least effect of rectal gas. In the rectum, when the gantry rotation angle range was short, the pass rate tended to reduce for all evaluation indices. The bladder showed no characteristic change between the treatment planning techniques in any of the evaluation indices.

The VMAT treatment planning with the least effect on dose distribution caused by rectal gas was shown to be a full arc.

Propolis has been used for the management of oral mucositis in a number of studies. Due to lack of sufficient evidence especially in radiotherapy induced oral mucositis, the present study was designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of propolis mouthwash in oral mucositis and dysphagia in patients undergoing head and neck radiotherapy.

This study was a prospective, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The patients randomly divided into two groups receiving either the propolis or the placebo mouthwash. Patients were advised to rinse their mouth with 15 mL three times daily for four weeks. Severity of mucositis and dysphagia were evaluated by the National Cancer Institute Common Toxicity Criteria (NCI-CTC) and Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE), respectively.

Thirty patients completed the study. Each group consisted of 15 patients. Although, there is not any significant difference between two groups in the first week of radiotherapy, a significant difference was seen in the second, the third and the fourth week (p = 0.03, 0.02, 0.02, respectively). Dysphagia reported as a mild score in the propolis group only in the fourth week which is significant compared with the placebo group (p = 0.01). There is not any serious adverse effect related to propolis or placebo during the study.

It seems that propolis mouthwash is an effective and safe medication for alleviation of oral mucositis and dysphagia in patients under head and neck radiotherapy.

To study normal lung tissue (NLT) complications in magnetic resonance (MR) image based linac and conventional radiotherapy (RT) techniques.

The Geant4 toolkit was used to simulate a 6 MV photon beam. A homogenous magnetic field of 1.5 Tesla (T) was applied in both perpendicular and parallel directions relative to the radiation beam.Analysis of the NLT complications was assessed according to the normal lung tissue complication probability (NTCP), the mean lung dose (MLD), and percentage of the lung volume receiving doses greater than 20 Gy (V
), using a sample set of CT images generated from a commercially available 4D-XCAT digital phantom.

The results show that the MLD and V
were lower for MR-linac RT. The largest reduction of MLD and V
for MR-linac RT configurations were 5 Gy and 29.3%, respectively.

MR-linac RT may result in lower NLT complications when compared to conventional RT.
