Since Si thin film is a semi-transparent film in mid-IR, a generalization was proposed of the normalized transmission metric used in literature for EOT studies in opaque films. The plasma dispersion effect was introduced into the studied perforated Si film through either doping or carriers' generation. Careful consideration for the differences in optical response modeling in both cases was given. Full-wave simulation and analysis showed an enhanced transmission when using Si with excess carriers, mimicking the enhancement reported in perforated metallic films. EOT was found in the mid-IR instead of the visible range which is the case in metallic films. The case of Si with generated excess carriers showed a mid-IR EOT peak reaching 157% around 6.68 µm, while the phosphorus-doped Si case showed a transmission enhancement of 152% around 8.6 µm. The effect of varying the holes' dimensions and generated carriers' concentration on the transmission was studied. The analogy of the relation between the fundamental mode cutoff and the EOT peak wavelength in the case of Si to the case of metal such as silver was studied and verified. The perforated Si thin film transmission sensitivity for a change in the refractive index of the holes and surroundings material was investigated. Also, a study of the device potential in sensing the hole and surroundings materials that have almost the same refractive index yet with different absorption fingerprints was performed as well.Habitat fragmentation is one of the drivers for amphibian population declines globally. Especially in industrialized countries roads disrupt the seasonal migration of amphibians between hibernation and reproduction sites, often ending in roadkills. Thus, a timely installing of temporary mitigation measures is important for amphibian conservation. We wanted to find out if plant phenology can be a proxy in advance to determine the start of amphibian migration, since both phenomena are triggered by temperature. We analysed data of 3751 amphibian and 7818 plant phenology observations from citizen science projects in Austria between 2000 and 2018. Using robust regression modelling we compared the migration of common toads (Bufo bufo) and common frogs (Rana temporaria) with the phenology of five tree, one shrub, and one herb species. Results showed close associations between the migration of common frogs and phenological phases of European larch, goat willow and apricot. Models based on goat willow predict migration of common frog to occur 21 days after flowering, when flowering was observed on 60th day of year; apricot based models predict migration to occur 1 day after flowering, observed on the 75th day of year. Common toads showed weaker associations with plant phenology than common frogs. Our findings suggest that plant phenology can be used to determine the onset of temporary mitigation measures for certain amphibian species to prevent roadkills.The IASLC lymph node map grouped the lymph node stations into "zones" for prognostic analyses. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the survival difference between N1h and N1p in patients of pN1M0 NSCLC. Medline, the Cochrane Library, Embase, and the Web of science were systematically searched to identify relevant studies published up to April 4th, 2020. A retrospective and prospective cohort study comparing N1h versus N1p to the pN1M0 NSCLC was included. Hazard ratios (HRs) for OS were aggregated according to a fixed or random-effect model. Ten publications for 1946 patients of pN1M0 NSCLC were included for the meta-analysis.The 5-year OS was lower for patients with N1h (HR 1.67, 95% CI 1.44-1.94; P less then 0.001). The pooled 5-year OS in N1h and N1p were 40% and 56%, respectively. The patients in pN1M0 NSCLC have different survival according to different N1 lymph node zones involvement patients with N1p metastasis have a better prognosis than those with N1h metastasis.Impaired driving performance due to sleep loss is a major contributor to motor-vehicle crashes, fatalities, and serious injuries. As on-road, fully-instrumented studies of drowsy driving have largely focused on young drivers, we examined the impact of sleep loss on driving performance and physiological drowsiness in both younger and older drivers of working age. Sixteen 'younger' adults (M = 24.3 ± 3.1 years [21-33 years], 9 males) and seventeen 'older' adults (M = 57.3 ± 5.2, [50-65 years], 9 males) undertook two 2 h drives on a closed-loop track in an instrumented vehicle with a qualified instructor following (i) 8 h sleep opportunity the night prior (well-rested), and (ii) after 29-h of total sleep deprivation (TSD). Following TSD, both age groups displayed increased subjective sleepiness and lane departures (p less then 0.05), with younger drivers exhibiting 7.37 × more lane departures, and 11 × greater risk of near crash events following sleep loss. While older drivers exhibited a 3.5 × more lane departures following sleep loss (p = 0.008), they did not have a significant increase in near-crash events (3/34 drives). Compared to older adults, younger adults had 3.1 × more lane departures (p = less then 0.001), and more near crash events (79% versus 21%, p = 0.007). Ocular measures of drowsiness, including blink duration, number of long eye closures and PERCLOS increased following sleep loss for younger adults only (p less then 0.05). link2 These results suggest that for older working-aged adults, driving impairments observed following sleep loss may not be due to falling asleep. Future work should examine whether this is attributed to other consequences of sleep loss, such as inattention or distraction from the road.Arapaima gigas is one of the largest freshwater fish species of high ecological and economic importance. Overfishing and habitat destruction are severe threats to the remaining wild populations. By incorporating a chromosomal Hi-C contact map, we improved the arapaima genome assembly to chromosome-level, revealing an unexpected high degree of chromosome rearrangements during evolution of the bonytongues (Osteoglossiformes). Combining this new assembly with pool-sequencing of male and female genomes, we identified id2bbY, a duplicated copy of the inhibitor of DNA binding 2b (id2b) gene on the Y chromosome as candidate male sex-determining gene. A PCR-test for id2bbY was developed, demonstrating that this gene is a reliable male-specific marker for genotyping. link3 Expression analyses showed that this gene is expressed in juvenile male gonads. Its paralog, id2ba, exhibits a male-biased expression in immature gonads. Transcriptome analyses and protein structure predictions confirm id2bbY as a prime candidate for the master sex-determiner. Acting through the TGFβ signaling pathway, id2bbY from arapaima would provide the first evidence for a link of this family of transcriptional regulators to sex determination. Our study broadens our current understanding about the evolution of sex determination genetic networks and provide a tool for improving arapaima aquaculture for commercial and conservation purposes.The evolutionary history of many organisms is characterized by major changes in morphology and distribution. Specifically, alterations of body mass and geographic distribution may profoundly influence organismal life-history traits. Here, we reconstructed the evolutionary history of flight-feather molt strategy using data from 1,808 Neornithes species. Our analysis suggests that the ancestral molt strategy of first-year birds was partial or entirely absent, and that complete wing flight-feather molt in first-year birds first evolved in the late Eocene and Oligocene (25-40 Ma), at least 30 Myr after birds first evolved. Complete flight-feather molt occurred mainly at equatorial latitudes and in relatively low body mass species, following a diversification of body mass within the lineage. We conclude that both body mass and geographic distribution shaped the evolution of molt strategies and propose that the evolutionary transition towards complete juvenile molt in the Neornithes is a novel, relatively late adaptation.Our objective was to quantify the differences in the outcomes from childhood bacterial meningitis (BM) and to describe the factors associated with them in different parts of the world. This study is a secondary analysis of prospectively collected data from five clinical BM trials conducted in Finland, Latin America (LatAm), and Angola between 1984 and 2017. As all data were collected uniformly, direct comparison of the series was possible. Associations between patient characteristics and death or dismal outcome-the triad of death, severe neurological sequelae, or deafness-were explored. In all, data on 2123 children with BM were analyzed. Etiology was confirmed in 95%, 83%, and 64%, in Finland, LatAm and Angola, respectively. The leading agents were Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Neisseria meningitidis. Dismal outcome was the end result for 54%, 31%, and 5% of children in Angola, LatAm, and Finland, respectively. Although underweight, anemia, and tardy arrival worsened prognoses in Angola and LatAm, it was the presenting condition that was central in terms of outcome. In multivariate analysis, the factors independently associated with dismal outcome were the study site (Angola vs. Finland, OR 11.91, 95% CI 5.54-25.63, p less then 0.0001 or LatAm vs. Finland, OR 9.46, 95% CI 4.35-20.61, p less then 0.0001), Glasgow Coma Score less then 13 (OR 4.58, 95% CI 3.31-6.32, p less then 0.0001), seizures (OR 1.96, 95% CI 1.43-2.69), age less then 1 year (OR 1.55, 95% CI 1.13-2.14, p = 0.007), and pneumococcal etiology (OR 1.49, 95% CI 1.08-2.06, p = 0.015). Greatly dissimilar outcomes from BM reflected the findings on admission on all three continents. Optimizing growth, preventing anemia, and prompt treatment may improve outcomes in resource poor areas.A large amount of high-quality teleseismic data is used for common conversion point (CCP) stacking of receiver functions in the Longmenshan area and near-by region. The results show that a large-scale high-velocity anomaly (LHVA) or lithospheric delamination can modify the structure of upper mantle discontinuities or weaken the phase boundary of olivine, which is a very important finding and can be used to assess stagnant slabs in the mantle transition zone globally. The deepening region of the 660 km discontinuity beneath the Songpan-Ganzi terrane identified in this study might be generated by the LHVA.
