Our results demonstrated that short-term exposure to nanopolystyrene in the range of μg/L potentially enhances the adverse effects of fungal infection on organisms. Crude oil and its derivatives are still the primary source of energy for humankind. However, during its transportation and treatment, spills of this resource can occur in aquatic environments. Nile tilapia is one of the most globally widespread fish species. This species is even found in brackish water due to its tolerance to salinity and pollution. In this study, the performance of brain cells (mitochondrial membrane potential [ΔΨm], calcium [Ca2+] and O2 and H2O2 levels) exposed to crude oil was assessed. In addition, fatty acid metabolism (cholesterol concentration and fatty acid synthase [FAS], acyl CoA-oxidase [AOX] and catalase [CAT] activities) in the brain, heart, liver and intestine of Nile tilapia exposed to the water-accommodated fraction (WAF) of 0.01, 0.1 or 1 g/L Maya crude oil (MCO) for 96 h were evaluated. After exposure, in brain cells, there were only increases in ROS and slight reductions in ΔΨm. Exposure to WAF of MCO induced and increased the levels of cholesterol and altered FAS and AOX activities in all examined tissues. The brain is the most susceptible organ to alterations in the activity of fatty acid metabolic enzymes and cholesterol levels relative to the heart, liver and intestine. The correlation between inhibition of the activity of CAT and AOX suggests a possible reduction in the proliferation and size of peroxisomes. Most biomarkers were significantly altered in the brains of Nile tilapia exposed to the WAF containing 1 g/L MCO in comparison to the control. To reveal the combined subacute toxicity of BTR and Cu at environmental levels on terrestrial animals, the activity of antioxidative enzymes and the glutathione levels in earthworms (Eisenia fetida) of the single or co-exposure treatments were determined. The activity of both antioxidant enzymes and non-enzymatic antioxidants was affected by BTR in earthworms. Moreover, the analyses of lysosomal neutral red retention time and total antioxidant capacity indicated a detoxification effect of BTR on Cu-induced impairments of the antioxidant defense capacity in earthworms. The apoptotic rate of coelomocytes in earthworms of the co-exposure treatment was lower than that in earthworms treated with Cu only, indicating that BTR alleviates Cu mediated lysosomal membrane damage and antioxidant defense system responses in earthworms. In this paper, we deciphered the core resistome disseminating from hospital wastewater to the aquatic environment by characterising the resistome, plasmidome, mobilome and virulome using metagenomic analysis. This study also elucidated different environmental resistome risks using shotgun-metagenomic assembly. The results showed that clinically relevant taxa were found in assessed matrices (Salmonella spp., Acinetobacter spp, Escherichia-Shigella spp., Pseudomonas spp., Staphylococcus spp. and Vibrio spp.). The current study relies on the investigation of the toxicity of this emerging pollutant on two freshwater species from different trophic levels the microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and the clam Corbicula fluminea. After 96 h of exposure to several concentrations of BPA, the growth of C. reinhardtii was affected, being the 96 h-EC50 value for growth 30 mg L-1. The toxicity and bioaccumulation of 30 mg L-1 BPA in microalgae after 24 h of exposure were studied. Several cytotoxicity biomarkers such as vitality, oxidative stress and cytoplasmic membrane potential were altered in exposed cells and microalgae accumulated 0.16 pg BPA cell-1. Regarding C. fluminea, four treatments were established control without BPA (C); BPA in the food (microalgae pre-exposed for 24 h to 30 mg L-1) (M); BPA in the water (7.5 mg L-1) (W); BPA in both food and water (M + W). After one month of exposure, treated bivalves showed a significantly decrease in the filtration rate and increased lipid peroxidation levels, indicating fitness reduction and oxidative damage.
