Thailand is one of the largest contributors to plastic waste in the oceans. Since mismanaged plastic waste can enter the ocean via inland waterways, microplastic contamination in freshwater used for tap water production has been raised as a potential issue. This study was conducted to determine the abundance and characteristics of microplastics in freshwater and treated tap water in Bangkok. Freshwater and treated water were collected from the eastern and western water supply systems in the dry and wet seasons. The source waters of the eastern and western water supply systems are the Chao Phraya River and Maeklong River, respectively. Approximately 0.40-2.40 particles/L microplastics was determined in the freshwater samples. No significant differences in microplastic abundance with respect to water supply system or season were found. Approximately 82.1% of the total microplastics found in the freshwater were smaller than 300 µm in size. The percentage contribution of various microplastic size ranges decreased with increasing size. The majority of microplastics found in freshwater were fragments (90.2%), colorless (64.3%), and made of polyethylene polymer (45.1%). Only the eastern water supply system was capable of removing microplastic particles (27.7%) from freshwater. The identification of microplastics larger than 100 µm in size in the treated tap water indicated potential contamination from microplastics in the treatment system, particularly after the sand filtration unit. The major characteristics of the microplastics found in treated tap water were similar to those found in freshwater, with 85.6% fragments, 85.1% colorless, and 47.9% made of polyethylene polymer. This article presents a case of sudden bilateral deafness in the context of a severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) infection and resultant coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). After treatment in the intensive care unit for acute respiratory distress syndrome and acute kidney failure, hearing ability had drastically changed. While hearing had been subjectively normal before the infection, deafness was now measured on the left and profound hearing loss on the right ear. The patient was treated with cochlea implants on the left and a hearing aid in the right ear. The hearing loss is most likely a complication of COVID-19.
Recurrent and residual laryngeal cancer after organ-preserving radio- or radiochemotherapy is associated with apoor prognosis. Salvage surgery is the most important therapeutic option in these cases.

The study assessed rates of recurrence and residual tumor as well as survival and complication rates after salvage laryngectomy at the authors' academic cancer center.

Aretrospective examination of all patients receiving laryngectomy between 2001 and 2019 due to tumor residuals or recurrence after primary radio- and radiochemotherapy was conducted.

A total of 33salvage procedures were performed. Defect reconstruction was performed by free flap surgery in 30.3% (n = 10) and regional flap surgery in 15.2% (n = 5) . One patient received regional flap surgery and free flap surgery simultaneously. Overall survival after 1, 2, and 5years was 68.7, 47.9, and 24.2%, and disease-free survival was 81.6, 47.8, and 24.2%, respectively, with 48.5% (n = 16) postoperative tumor recurrences overall. Disease-free survival was significantly shorter for tumor extension into or onto the hypopharynx (p = 0.041). Postoperatively, 72.7% of patients developed apharyngocutaneous fistula, of which 24.2% required surgical treatment. The hospital stay was 28.0 ± 16.1 days.

Salvage laryngectomy is associated with ahigh rate of treatable complications and high morbidity. Nevertheless, considering the advanced tumor stages treated, it allows for respectable oncological results.

Discovery of two rust resistance genes, R
and R
, from the sunflower lines introduced from South Africa and genetic mapping of them to sunflower chromosome 13. Rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia helianthi Schw., is one of the most serious diseases of sunflower in the world. The rapid changes that occur in the virulence characteristics of pathogen populations present a continuous threat to the effectiveness of existing rust-resistant hybrids. Thus, there is a continued need for the characterization of genetically diverse sources of rust resistance. In this study, we report to identify two new rust resistance genes, R
and R
, from the sunflower lines, KP193 and KP199, introduced from South Africa. The inheritance of rust resistance was investigated in both lines using two mapping populations developed by crossing the resistant plants selected from KP193 and KP199 with a common susceptible parent HA 89. The F
populations were first genotyped using genotyping by sequencing for mapping of the rust genesximal to R17 at 0.7 cM. R18 co-segregated with the SNP marker SFW04317 and was proximal to two cosegregating SNPs, SFW01497 and SFW05453, at 1.9 cM. selleckchem These maps provide markers for stacking R17 or R18 with other broadly effective rust resistance genes to extend the durability of rust resistance. The relationship of the six rust resistance genes in the cluster was discussed.
Osteoarthritis (OA)-the progressive degeneration of synovial joints-is aworldwide problem that affects society, is associated with age and is the dominant reason for pain and immobility of the locomotor system. In the population, 70% of people over the age of 70show some signs of OA. Overall, up to 25% of the total population is affected, due to the general aging of the population itself, and this is an increasing tendency. However, in people over the age of 40the incidence of OA is already rising due to posttraumatic or secondary forms, like dysplasia, malalignment and other background factors.

There is ahigh need for mobility and sports in all generations, so the demands on the joints are high, especially if early degenerative changes are already present. Orthopaedic physicians are challenged with the limited load capacity, pain and the progressive joint problems, on the one hand to get the patient back to full mobility, and, on the other, to prevent early joint replacement. Early diagnosis and preventive measurements, as well as conservative treatments-from medication to braces-are necessary to achieve symptom-free movement and joint preservation to avoid joint replacement.

Therefore, this study was focused to examine the prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) genes among intestinal Escherichia coli isolated from drug users in Ahvaz, Iran. Among clients of toxicology laboratory who were confirmed their addiction to each of Morphine, Amphetamine or Methamphetamine, 109 drug users were examined voluntarily for infection with hepatitis B or C using commercial enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) method. Their stool specimens were obtained to isolate intestinal E. coli. The disc diffusion and combination disk methods were conducted to demonstrate antibiotic resistance pattern and phenotypically ESBL producers. ESBL-encoding genes (bla-TEM, bla-CTX-M, and bla-SHV) were also examined by PCR. Based on results, hepatitis C infection was more prevalent than hepatitis B among drug users. Of 109 isolates, a total of 57 (52.29%) ESBL positive E. coli were obtained from drug users and bla-TEM gene (60.55%) was found to be the most prevalent type, followed by bla-CTX-M (40.36%) and bla-SHV (39.44%). All isolates represented different resistance levels to tested antibiotics and 54.43% of the ESBL‑producing isolates showed multidrug resistance (MDR) and the most frequent MDR pattern was simultaneous resistance to the seven (27.90%) of antimicrobials particularly erythromycin, penicillin, amoxycilin, cefteriaxon, cefotaxim, tetracycline and trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole. Fecal carriage of ESBL-production and MDR commensal isolates such as E. coli among drug users underlines the risk of transferring resistance genes between nonpathogenic and pathogenic bacteria. The CRISPR-Cas system is widely distributed in prokaryotes and plays an important role in the adaptive immunity of bacteria and archaea. Bifidobacterium is an important component of the intestinal flora of humans and animals, and some species of this bacterium can be employed as food additives. However, the Bifidobacterium CRISPR-Cas system has not been fully elucidated to date. In this study, the genomes of 110 strains of Bifidobacterium were employed to research the diversity of the type I-U system. The 110 strains were divided into five groups according to the genes adjacent to the CRISPR locus, including group A, B, C, D and E. Strains in the intergroup had unique species classifications and MLST types. An evolutionary tree was constructed based on the conserved cas4/cas1 fusion gene. The results showed that group A had a different evolutionary branch compared with the other groups and had a relatively low spacer number. Notably, group B, C and E had exhibited ABC transporter regulators in the genes adjacent to the CRISPR locus. ABC transporters play important roles in the exocytosis of many antibiotics and are involved in horizontal gene transfer. This mechanism may have promoted the evolution of Bifidobacterium and the horizontal gene transfer of the type I-U system, which may have promoted the generation of system diversity. In summary, our results help to elucidate the role of the type I-U system in the evolution of Bifidobacterium.
Scientific findings can be an important source of knowledge for public health stakeholders involved in promoting physical activity, but several barriers hinder their use. Knowledge translation can simplify this process, but it requires the understanding of the stakeholder's needs.

This qualitative study aims to describe how public health stakeholders access information and scientific findings, identify possible barriers, and highlight the needs of stakeholders in terms of presentation and processing.

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twelve local- and state-level stakeholders from North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia working in the area of physical activity promotion. The interviewees were selected through purposive sampling. The interviews were evaluated using qualitative content analysis.

The benefits of scientific findings are emphasized by the interviewees, but alack of resources in combination with aflood of information, high complexity, and technical jargon complicate their application.
