Finally, we demonstrated that SGK1 inhibition enhanced the inhibitory effect of a JAK inhibitor on STAT3 phosphorylation and cancer cell proliferation. Our findings provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms of STAT3 activation and suggest SGK1 as a potential target for STAT3-targeted combination cancer therapy. In this letter, I discuss the notion of dormancy that De Luca Jr. relies on to criticize the theory of homeostasis. In particular, I try to qualify the issues related to the fact that dormancy is not always a free behavior but is in most situations under the influence of environmental factors. To this end, I discuss diapause in arthropods, which can be obligatory (under the influence of endogenous commands) but which is in most cases facultative (under external command). I emphasize that the notion of stability of a dormant organism must be taken with caution. I briefly mention what the study of sleep in animals can contribute to the notion of homeostasis. Finally, I focus on the role of microbial symbionts and the notion of holobiont. Through this, I question the future of the notions of internal environment and homeostasis and I propose to revisit them in the context of the effects of species interactions on the physiology of organisms. This study investigates the Covid-19 driven indiscriminate disposal of PPE wastes (mostly face mask and medical wastes) in Chittagong metropolitan area (CMA), Bangladesh. Based on the field monitoring, the mean PPE density (PPE/m2± SD) was calculated to be 0.0226 ± 0.0145, 0.0164 ± 0.0122, and 0.0110 ± 0.00863 for July, August, and September 2021, respectively (during the peak time of Covid-19 in Bangladesh). Moreover, gross information on PPE waste generation in the city was calculated using several parameters such as population density, face mask acceptance rate by urban population, total Covid-19 confirmed cases, quarantined and isolated patients, corresponding medical waste generation rate (kg/bed/day), etc. Moreover, the waste generated due to face mask and other PPEs in the CMA during the whole Covid-19 period (April 4, 2020 to September 5, 2021) were calculated to be 64183.03 and 128695.75 tons, respectively. It has been observed that the negligence of general people, lack of awareness about environmental pollution, and poor municipal waste management practices are the root causes for the contamination of the dwelling environment by PPE wastes. As a result, new challenges have emerged in solid waste management, which necessitates the development of an appropriate waste management strategy. The ultimate policies and strategies may help to achieve the SDG goals 3, 6, 11, 12, 13, and 15, and increase public perception on the use and subsequent disposal of PPEs, especially face masks.Industrial effluents generally contain several metals, so during adsorptive treatment, they may influence the removal of each other. It is essential to explore the effect of co-cations on metal removal in multi-metal solutions. The present study examined the possibility of processed rice husk and saw dust to remove Cr6+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Cd2+ and Zn2+, from the single, binary and multi-component aqueous solutions. A substantial lesser removal of metal ions was observed in the presence of co-ions. This study revealed antagonistic effect on the removal of a particular metal ion, from the industrial effluent, even at optimum process parameters if other metal ions are present in the effluent. Although, a higher concentration of one metal ion than others in effluents increased its removal due to a greater number of ions as compared to other for the biosorption, yet presence of other ions influences the uptake of individual ions. In case of industrial effluents, maximum adsorption was obtained at pH 2.0 for Cr6+, 5.0 for Ni2+ and Cd2+ and 6.0 for Zn2+ and Cu2+. The study confirms the beneficial use of the studied biosorbents in water remediation.Ranitidine is widely concerned due to it is mainly related to the transformation into highly toxic carcinogenic products and non-readily biodegradable characteristics in aquatic environment. In this study, biodegradation of ranitidine during rural human feces (HF) aerobic composting was investigated. Results show that both levels of ranitidine are quickly removed in the first-3-day composting. The microorganisms play a vital role in the ranitidine degradation, especially for Firmicutes at the thermophilic period. The effect of ranitidine on the aerobic composting was further analyzed under the normal content (10 mg/kg) and high content (100 mg/kg). The 10 mg/kg ranitidine quickens temperature rise and organic matter degradation of the composting, while the 100 mg/kg ranitidine produces inhibiting effects. However, the effects only occur in the early stage of composting, and then tend to disappear with the removal of ranitidine. Fluorescence spectra confirm that humification and aromatization of dissolved organic matters (DOMs) in the substrates are fastened in 10 mg/kg group, while delayed in 100 mg/kg group. Metagenomic analysis reveals that relative abundances of Firmicutes and sequences related to carbohydrates metabolism increase in the groups mixed with the ranitidine at the early period. The findings provide the first new and systematical insights into degradation characteristics and potential effect of ranitidine during the rural HF composting. The application of ion exchange (IX) resins to remove disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursors in wastewater effluents is challenging due to relatively high concentrations of competing anions. This study examined various pretreatment strategies to target competing ions to improve IX removal of DBP precursors, bromide and dissolved organic matter (DOM), measured as trihalomethane and haloacetic acid formation potentials (THMFP and HAAFP). IX batch experiments were performed with four commercial anion exchange (AIX) resins selective for bromide (BrP), DOM (A860), sulfate (MTA) and PFOA/PFOS (PFA), and one cation exchange (CIX) resin selective for iodide (CT). For single AIX treatments the bromide removal ranking was the following PFA (58%) > MTA (51%) > BrP (43%) > A860 (16%), which corresponded with decreasing brominated THMFP removals and increasing bromine incorporation factors. For dual AIX combinations (PFA and BrP, MTA and BrP), either simultaneous or sequential treatments had the highest bromide (PFA + Breuse applications.Sublethal exposure to insecticides can trigger unintended responses in non-target insects that may disrupt reproductive and developmental performances of these organisms. Here, we assessed whether sublethal exposure to the pyrethroid insecticide deltamethrin in early life had sublethal and transgenerational effects on the reproduction (i.e., fecundity and fertility) and wing morphology of Chironomus columbiensis, an aquatic insect used as a water quality indicator. We first conducted concentration-response bioassays to evaluate the susceptibility of C. columbiensis larvae to deltamethrin. Our results revealed that deltamethrin toxicity was approximately 7-fold higher when C. columbiensis larvae where exposed to 96 h (LC50 = 0.17 [0.15-0.20] μg/L) than to 24 h (LC50 = 1.17 [0.97-1.43] μg/L). Furthermore, the sublethal exposures (at LC1 = 0.02 μg/L or LC10 = 0.05 μg/L) of immature C. columbiensis resulted in lower fecundity (e.g., reduced eggs production) and morphometric variation wing shapes. Tivantinib Further reduction in fertility rates (quantity of viable eggs) occurred at deltamethrin LC10 (0.05 μg/L). Almost 80% of the fecundity was recovered with only a single recovery generation; however, two subsequent recovery generations were not sufficient to fully recover fecundity in C. columbiensis. Specimens recovered from 98.5% of wing morphometric variation after two consecutive generations without deltamethrin exposure. Collectively, our findings demonstrates that sublethal exposure to synthetic pyrethroids such as deltamethrin detrimentally affect the reproduction and wing shape of C. columbiensis, but also indicate that proper management of these compounds (e.g., concentration and frequency of application) would suffice for these insects' population recovery.Avocado is one of the most important fruits with a high nutritional content; this fruit is consumed and cultivated worldwide. It is originally grown in Central America and the West Indies islands. But it is now cultivated in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Avocado waste is an abundantly available raw material that can be converted into adsorbents to remove different pollutants from aqueous solutions. This review article explores the utilization of avocado waste as raw material to develop an efficient adsorbent and its use against various toxicants. Many research papers have been published on the use of avocado waste-derived adsorbents in the recent past. The factors that affect the adsorption processes are examined in light of published references. Some critical adsorption parameters, such as equilibrium (isotherms), kinetics, and thermodynamics, have been reported in the published literature; these parameters and their data are critically discussed. The characterization, mechanism, and surface chemistry of avocado waste-derived adsorbents are also discussed. To date, no review article on avocado waste-derived adsorbents is available, where researchers can get an overview of the preparation, characterization, and adsorption attributes of avocado waste adsorbents against various pollutants. Recent literature demonstrates the effective utilization of avocado waste as a cleaner and sustainable raw material for the production of adsorbents. Objectives of the present research were to examine the capacity of disc-milled high lignin biochar colloids (CBC) for the removal of ciprofloxacin (CPX) from aqueous solution and synthetic hydrolyzed human urine. In this study, adsorption of CPX was tested against the initial pH (3-10), ionic strength (0.001-0.1 M NaNO3), resident time (up to 8 h), initial CPX concentration (5-100 mg/L) and temperature (25, 35, and 45 °C). The surface morphology was examined using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area. The CBC was observed to be  less then  300 nm whereas the BET surface area was 284 m2/g. Best CPX adsorption demonstrated at pH 5-6 and however, indicated ionic strength dependency. Experimental kinetics data in aqueous media were well-fitted to the pseudo-second-order (r2 of 0.98), while the Hill and Langmuir isotherm models best described the isotherm data (r2 of 0.95 and 0.94, respectively) confirming chemisorption followed by physisorption interactions. The thermodynamics results indicate that CPX adsorption onto CBC is spontaneous (-ΔG), endothermic (+ΔH) and has increased randomness (+ΔS) in the aqueous system. The kinetic experimental data in synthetic urine matrix was fitted with Elovich (r2 = 0.99) and fractional power (r2 = 0.96) models whereas Hills (r2 = 0.99) and Langmuir (r2 = 0.97) models were the most fitted with isotherm data suggesting the adsorption of CPX on the CBC by chemisorption mechanisms. In conclusion, CBC demonstrated effective removal of CPX indicating its potential to be used in wastewater treatment.
