To examine the moderating effects of individual, family, and social factors on the relationship between adolescent exposure to media violence and attitudes towards school bullying.

A cross-sectional study.

A total of 473 middle and high school students participated in a self-reported survey between August and October 2016. Self-reported questionnaires were used to measure perceived aggression, resilience, parental violence experience, parenting styles, satisfaction with school life, teacher attitudes towards school bullying, media violence exposure, and adolescent attitudes towards school bullying. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and hierarchical multiple regression.

Resilience (an individual factor; β=-0.48, p=.049) and parenting styles (a family factor; β=-0.77, p=.045) moderated the negative influence of media violence exposure on adolescent attitudes towards school bullying. The findings indicated that higher individual resilience and parents with more positive parenting stylesnting styles need to be developed.
Three types of intervention programmes can be suggested based on the results of this study. Reinforcing individual resilience and positive parenting styles should be considered important in developing intervention programmes targeted at eliminating the adverse effects of media violence exposure. Intervention programmes to develop parenting styles to increase the resilience of adolescents can also be considered. Lastly, programmes to screen for adverse outcomes of media violence exposure, low resilience, and poor parenting styles need to be developed.Transmembrane 16A (TMEM16A), also known as anoctamin 1, is the molecular basis of the calcium-activated chloride channels. TMEM16A is present in interstitial cells of Cajal, which are the pacemaker cells that control smooth muscle contraction. TMEM16A is implicated in gastrointestinal disorders. Activation of TMEM16A is believed to promote the gastrointestinal muscle contraction. Here, we report a highly efficient, nontoxic, and selective activator of TMEM16A, canthaxanthin (CX). The study using molecular docking and site-directed mutation revealed that CX-specific binging site in TMEM16A is K769. CX was also found to promote the contraction of smooth muscle cells in gastrointestinal tract through activation of TMEM16A channels, which provides an excellent basis for development of CX as a chemical tool and potential therapeutic for gastrointestinal dysfunction.Invasive species have major impacts on biodiversity and are one of the primary causes of amphibian decline and extinction. Unlike other top ant invaders that negatively affect larger fauna via chemical defensive compounds, the Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) does not have a functional sting. Nonetheless, it deploys defensive compounds against competitors and adversaries. We estimated levels of ant aggression toward 3 native terrestrial amphibians by challenging juveniles in field ant trails and in lab ant foraging arenas. We measured the composition and quantities of toxin in L. humile by analyzing pygidial glands and whole-body contents. We examined the mechanisms of toxicity in juvenile amphibians by quantifying the toxin in amphibian tissues, searching for histological damages, and calculating toxic doses for each amphibian species. To determine the potential scope of the threat to amphibians, we used global databases to estimate the number, ranges, and conservation status of terrestrial amphibian species with ranges that overlap those of L. humile. Juvenile amphibians co-occurring spatially and temporally with L. humile die when they encounter L. #link# humile on an ant trail. In the lab, when a juvenile amphibian came in contact with L. humile the ants reacted quickly to spray pygidial-gland venom onto the juveniles. Iridomyrmecin was the toxic compound in the spray. Following absorption, it accumulated in brain, kidney, and liver tissue. Toxic dose for amphibian was species dependent. Worldwide, an estimated 817 terrestrial amphibian species overlap in range with L. humile, and 6.2% of them are classified as threatened. Our findings highlight the high potential of L. humile venom to negatively affect amphibian juveniles and provide a basis for exploring the largely overlooked impacts this ant has in its wide invasive range. In this tutorial, we focus on the problem of how to define and estimate treatment effects when some patients develop a contraindication and are thus ineligible to receive a treatment of interest during follow-up. We first describe the concept of positivity, which is the requirement that all subjects in an analysis be eligible for all treatments of interest conditional on their baseline covariates, and the extension of this concept in the longitudinal treatment setting. We demonstrate using simulated datasets and regression analysis that under violations of longitudinal positivity, typical associational estimates between treatment over time and the outcome of interest may be misleading depending on the data-generating structure. link2 Finally, we explain how one may define "treatment strategies," such as "treat with medication unless contraindicated," to overcome the problems linked to time-varying eligibility. Finally, we show how contrasts between the expected potential outcomes under these strategies may be consistently estimated with inverse probability weighting methods. We provide R code for all the analyses described. One of the main challenges in targeted alpha therapy is assuring delivery of the α-particle dose to the targeted cells. Thus, it is critical to identify ligands for α-emitting radiometals that will form complexes that are very stable, both in vitro and in vivo. In this investigation, thorium-227 (t1/2 = 18.70 days) chelation of ligands containing hydroxypyridinonate (HOPO) or picolinic acid (pa) moieties and the stability of the resultant complexes were studied. Chelation reactions were followed by reversed-phased HPLC and gamma spectroscopy. Studies revealed that high 227 Th chelation yields could be obtained within 2.5 h or less with ligands containing four Me-3,2-HOPO moieties, 1 (83%) and 2 (65%), and also with ligands containing pa moieties, H4 octapa 3 (65%) and H4 py4pa 6 (87%). No reaction occurred with H4 neunpa-p-Bn-NO2 4, and the chelation reaction with another pa ligand H4 pypa 5 gave inconsistent yields with a very broad radio-HPLC peak. The ligands spermine-(Me-3,2-HOPO)4 1, H4 octapa 3, and H4 py4pa 6 had high stability (i.e., 87% of 227 Th still bound to the ligand) in phosphate-buffered saline at room temperature over a 6-day period. Preliminary studies with ligand 6 demonstrated efficient chelation of thorium-226 (t1/2 = 30.57 min) when heated to 80°C for 5 min.Howler monkeys (platyrrhini) have evolved routine trichromatic color vision independently from catarrhines, which presents an opportunity to test hypotheses concerning the adaptive value of distinguishing reddish from greenish hues. A longstanding hypothesis posits that trichromacy aids in the efficient detection of reddish-ripe fruits, which could be an advantage for the detection of the nutritional content of the fruit, such as sugars. In the present study, we assessed fruit visual conspicuity and selection based on color and sucrose content by wild mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) on Agaltepec Island, Mexico. We used colorimetry to classify dietary fruits as cryptic (greenish) or conspicuous (reddish) against their background leaves. Species-specific color models indicate that trichromatic howler monkeys should be more efficient in discriminating the conspicuous ripe fruits from leaves compared to detecting cryptic ripe fruits from leaves. We found howler monkeys consume more cryptic fruits compared to conspicuous fruits, and that they consume more unripe fruits than ripe fruits. The consumption (acceptance) of fruit was independent of sucrose content, and thus this disaccharide may not play an essential role in mantled howler food selection. Our findings suggest that routine trichromatic color vision may aid in the detection and discrimination of conspicuously colored fruits, but that the final decision whether to accept or reject a fruit probably involves the use of other senses in addition to vision.
The US opioid crisis has led to increases in overdose fatalities and the incidence of HIV, hepatitis C and other infections. This analysis examines social network predictors of recent (self-report injection followed by non-injection) and sustained (self-report non-injection at two consecutive visits among those who previously injected) injection cessation in Appalachian Kentucky.

Selleck ARS-853 were collected through bi-annual longitudinal assessments for Social Networks among Appalachian People (SNAP; 2008-17). Using logistic regression with generalized estimating equations that clustered on individuals, we regressed non-injection status on the number of social network members who (a) did not inject and (b) recently stopped injecting and tested for interactions between each social network exposure and prior non-injection status. Social network exposures were self-reported.

Rural eastern Kentucky, USA.

Participants entered the analysis only after reporting recent injection and had to have had at least two consed sustained injection cessation among people with a history of injection drug use in Appalachian Kentucky.
For each additional network member who did not inject drugs, there was an increased odds of recent and sustained injection cessation among people with a history of injection drug use in Appalachian Kentucky.
Various psychosocial support services for cancer patients are available in Japan; however, their utilization rate is low. The present study aimed to examine factors contributing to help-seeking behavior in the use of psychosocial support services among cancer outpatients at three stages Precontemplation (without adjustment disorder or major depression), Precontemplation (with adjustment disorder or major depression), and Contemplation.

We conducted a web-based questionnaire survey at two points with a panel of cancer outpatients. We collected data on demographic information, physical status, the use of and intention to use psychosocial support services, psychological distress, attitude toward using psychosocial support services for cancer patients, and social support.

In total, 395 cancer patients were analyzed. In the Precontemplation (without adjustment disorder or major depression) stage, resistance to help-seeking (OR = 0.726, P = .011) and future prospects of the Brief Cancer-Related Worry Inventory (OR = 1.012, P = .019) were significant. link3 In the Precontemplation (with adjustment disorder or major depression) stage, only recommendation by medical staff or family (OR = 0.000, P = .026) had a significant effect. In the Contemplation stage, only social and interpersonal problems (OR = 0.942, P = .080) showed a significant (negative) trend.

This study showed that contributing factors differed by stage. To encourage the use of psychosocial support services, it is desirable to recommend the use and to develop interventions for promoting, with responding to patients' conditions and intentions rather than responding to everyone in the same way.
