In the present study, we characterized the spatial distributions of ws-Fe in six Chinese megacities in the winter of 2019. Furthermore, we investigated the speciation of PM2.5 ws-Fe (ws-Fe(II) and ws-Fe(III)), potential sources of ws-Fe, and association between ws-Fe and particle-bound reactive oxygen species (ROS). Higher ws-Fe concentrations were observed in northern cities (Harbin, Beijing, and Xi'an) than in southern cities (Chengdu, Wuhan, and Guangzhou). Moreover, atmospheric ws-Fe concentrations in urban China were several folds higher than those in urban areas of the United States and several orders of magnitude higher than those in remote oceans, indicating that China is a key contributor to global atmospheric ws-Fe. The dominant form of ws-Fe was ws-Fe(III) in Beijing, whereas ws-Fe(II) was more abundant in the other five cities. The concentrations of ws-Fe and ws-Fe(II) concentrations increased with increasing PM2.5 levels in all the six cities, however, we did not observe any consistent pattern of ws-Fe(III) concentration. Biomass burning was a dominant source of ws-Fe in all cities except Beijing. A strong positive correlation was observed between particle-bound ROS content and ws-Fe; this finding is consistent with those of previous studies indicating that ws-Fe in PM2.5 notably influences atmospheric chemical processes and human health.Prenatal exposure to plastic chemicals has been associated with alterations to early-life immune function in children. However, previous studies have generally been small and focused on limited repertoires of immune indices. In a large population-based pre-birth cohort (n = 1074), third-trimester measurements of eight phthalate metabolites and three analogues of bisphenols were used to estimate prenatal exposure to phthalate and bisphenol compounds. In cord blood, immune cell populations were measured by flow cytometry and an extensive panel of cytokines and chemokines were measured by multiplex immunoassay. We used these cord blood analytes to estimate "early life" immune profiles. The full study sample comprises data from 774 infants with prenatal plastic metabolite measurements and any cord blood immune data. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to evaluate whether prenatal phthalate and bisphenol exposure was prospectively associated with cord blood immune cell populations and cytokine and chemokine levels. Generally, inverse associations were observed between prenatal phthalate exposure and cord blood immune indices. Higher exposure to di-n-butyl phthalate was associated with lower cord blood levels of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and interferon gamma-induced protein 10 (IP-10); higher exposure to the sum of dibutyl phthalates was associated with lower cord blood levels of IP-10; and higher exposure to benzyl butyl phthalate was associated with lower cord blood levels of interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β). There was less evidence of associations between bisphenols and cord blood immune indices. These results extend previous work examining prenatal plastic chemical exposure and early-life immune development and highlight the importance of further examination of potential associations with health-related outcomes.Cadmium (Cd) isotope fractionation patterns within soil profiles and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear and poorly documented. Here, Cd concentrations and isotope compositions of metal ore, surface soils and soil profile samples around a lead-zinc mine in southwest China were determined, and the relationships between soil properties and Cd isotope fractionation within the soil profiles were investigated. Cadmium concentrations of eleven surface soil samples were 0.49-66.1 mg kg-1 and the samples with high Cd concentrations had Cd isotope compositions similar to the metal ore (δ114/110Cd = 0.02‰), indicating that mining activity was the main Cd source at the study areas. Within three soil profiles with different Cd pollution levels the δ114/110Cd values gradually increased with increasing depth from 0 to 40 cm (Δ114/110Cd = 0.08-0.18‰), reaching a maximum at 30-40 cm depth, and then remained fairly constant or decreased with increasing soil depth below 40 cm. Soil δ114/110Cd values were negatively correlated with free iron and manganese oxides contents, which decreased at 0-40 cm depth then increased below 40 cm. This indicates that light Cd isotopes within 0-40 cm depth preferentially migrated downward with free iron and manganese oxides, leaving the soils at a depth of 0-40 cm enriched in heavy Cd isotopes. At 40-90 cm depth the preferential retention of heavy Cd isotopes by hydroxides may be responsible for the gradual decrease in δ114/110Cd values with increasing soil depth. These observations demonstrate that the vertical migration of Cd can induce detectable isotope fractionation within soil profiles and alter the δ114/110Cd values including those of the surface soils. Our study highlights the need to consider Cd mobilization and transport in soil profiles when tracing metal sources using isotope techniques.Microplastics (MPs) present in non-negligible amounts in urban environments, where urban rivers serve as important transport channels for MPs. However, the footprint of MPs in urban rivers under the influence of natural and anthropogenic factors is poorly understood. This study investigated the MPs organization, stability and pollution risk before and after rainfall in the Qing River, Beijing. Rainfall potentially diluted the MPs abundance, attributed to opening of barrages and increase of flow velocity. The proportion of small-sized MPs (SMPs, 48-300 μm) decreased slightly, whereas that of normal-sized MPs (NMPs, 300-1000 μm) and large-sized MPs (LMPs, > 1000 μm) increased. check details However, SMPs dominantly presented in the Qing River before and after rainfall. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and polystyrene (PS) were main polymers observed in the Qing River. The proportions of PET and PS decreased, while PP and PE increased after rainfall. The main types of MPs introduced by stormwater were PP and PE. The elevated MP diversity integrated index after rain suggested that rainfall enriched the local sources of MPs. Rainfall reduced the stability and fragmentation of MPs owing to the introduction of large debris. NMPs and LMPs were susceptible to further fragmentation and downsizing, implying that MPs abundance in the Qing River tended to rise and SMPs might enriched. In addition, alteration of MPs fragmentation and stability reflected that the likely input source was wastewater treatment plant and atmospheric deposition before rainfall, whereas soil and road dust were possible sources after rainfall. The pollution risk assessment defined the MPs pollution risk of Qing River as low level and decreased after rainfall. This study demonstrated that rainfall substantially influences MPs organization in urban river and provided empirical support for MPs environmental behavior under influence of natural and anthropogenic factors.The link between zinc exposure and glucose metabolism or the development of type 2 diabetes (T2D) is controversial, and underlying mechanisms are unclear. This study aimed to explore the associations of zinc exposure with glucose-insulin homeostasis traits and the long-term effects of zinc on the development of T2D, and further to estimate the potential roles of inflammation and oxidative damage in such relationships. We investigated 3890 urban adults from the Wuhan-Zhuhai cohort, and followed up every three years. Mixed linear model was applied to estimate dose-response associations between urinary zinc and glycemia traits [fasting plasma insulin (FPI), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), insulin resistance (homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, HOMA-IR), and β-cell dysfunction (homeostasis model assessment of β-cell function, HOMA-B)], as well as zinc and biomarkers for systemic inflammation (C-reactive protein) and oxidative damage (8-isoprostane and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine). To help future research identify points of interventions to reduce children's maladaptive eating behaviors, the goal of this study was to determine whether persuasive-controlling feeding practices mediated the link between parent mental health and children's emotional eating. Feeding practices were measured by the FPSQ. Anxiety was measured by the GAD-7. Depression was measured by the CESD-R. Emotional eating was measured by the CEBQ. Survey data were collected from 259 U.S. parents of preschool children as a part of a larger study. Results from structural equation modeling showed that nonresponsive feeding behaviors mediated the relationship between parent mental health and children's emotional eating. Future longitudinal studies and clinical trials should examine whether and how persuasive-controlling feeding practices explain the link between parents' mental health and children's maladaptive eating behaviors, including emotional eating.The COVID-19 pandemic may negatively influence food parenting practices, also among parents of adolescents.
