Direct cardiac invasion from lung cancer was an independent prognostic factor for survival time in patients with lung cancer. Patients with direct cardiac invasion by NSCLC have a poorer clinical outcome than those without direct cardiac invasion. A careful preoperative evaluation is mandatory and appropriate management of cardiac involvement should be considered in the treatment of NSCLC.
The typical non-muscle complications of long-surviving X-linked myotubular myopathy (XLMTM) include scoliosis, head deformity, macrocephaly, gastroesophageal reflux disease and peliosis hepatis. Recently, pulmonary blebs and recurrent pneumothorax have also been reported as uncommon complications, whereas no reports on autopsy cases have focused on lung lesions.

An 8-year-old boy with XLMTM presented recurrent pneumothorax requiring bleb resection and pleurodesis. He subsequently developed multiple pulmonary mass lesions. He died of hemorrhagic shock due to peliosis hepatis. Autopsy showed multiple peliosis-like hematomas in the blebs of the lung. The histopathological examination of the hematomas revealed pooled blood without a pathway to bronchus. No apparent increase in desmin- or α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA)-positive cells, namely myofibroblasts, was observed around hematomas, suggesting that the mutation in the myotubularin gene was involved in the defective repair process in the liver and lung tissues.

Recurrent pneumothorax should be considered as a non-muscle complication of XLMTM. Peliosis-like intrapulmonary hematoma may also be a critical complication caused by poor proliferation of myofibroblasts in the tissue repair process.

Youth aged 13-29 years represent 23% of the population but account for 40% of new HIV diagnoses, with risk peaking at ages 22-23 years. We assessed sexual behaviors, PrEP knowledge and attitudes among patients of 6 School-Based-Health-Centers (SBHCs) located in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx.

667 patients, aged 13-19 years, completed a survey in the SBHCs waiting rooms between 10/2018 - 4/2019 RESULTS Of the survey respondents attending SBHCs, 32% reported ever having heard of PrEP and, upon learning of PrEP, 67% stated that would be very likely (35%) or somewhat likely (32%) to take PrEP if it was offered to them free of charge.

Youth of color are disproportionately infected by HIV throughout the US. Efforts are needed to educate adolescents on the benefits of PrEP, SBHCs are well situated to reduce barriers in providing PrEP directly to those who would benefit from its protection..

The current study investigated the potential application of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) in clinical analysis of human serum albumin (HSA) as a biomarker of liver and kidney disease. The excitation wavelength and HSA concentrations were systematically varied, and the LIF spectrum was recorded, in order to construct a standard calibration curve. Over a wide range of excitation wavelengths, excitation at 350 nm showedthe maximum fluorescence emission centered at 500 nm. We compared the determination of certain concentrations of HSA using both LIF and conventional laboratory assays. The LIF technique proved to be highly accurate and efficient. It may be concluded that femtosecond LIF provides a new, easy, very sensitive, precise, and direct method of detecting albumin in various biological samples. The insight into the behavior of polyiodides under non-ambient conditions can enrich the practical applications due to obtaining materials with adjustable and tunable conducting properties. In this work Raman spectroscopy study in the range 0 - 6.5 GPa has been performed for dithiazolylidene-dithiazolium zigzag polyiodide with N-H…N hydrogen bond. Variations of band positions in the low-wavenumber region of Raman spectra have been attributed to the changes in the anionic part of the unit cell. The association of different interacting polyiodide subunits at pressure above 1.5 GPa leads to the emergence of the bands at 98 and 115 cm-1 due to consistent vibrations in the I82- zigzag. The emergence of the band at 159 cm-1 above 0.28 GPa can be assigned to N-H…N hydrogen bond vibration. The obtained results depict undergoing structure transformations the stronger are cation…cation and anion…anion interactions the more likely is the observation of conducting properties due to the formation of polyiodide zigzag and strongly-bound hydrogen-bonded fragment.A series of dialkylaminostyrylhetarene dyes constructed from electron-rich and electron-deficient moieties of various structures connected via vinylene π-bridges are introduced as temperature-sensitive luminophores. The temperature dependent emission of the dyes in the acidified dichloromethane solutions derives from temperature-induced shift of the equilibrium between neutral and protonated forms of the dyes. The heating-induced blue shift and intensification of emission of neutral form of the dyes make them a promising basis for development of nanoparticles exhibiting temperature-sensitivity in aqueous solutions at pH typical of biological liquids. Hydrophobicity-driven incorporation of the water insoluble dyes into L-α-phosphatidylcholine(PC)-based bilayers allows to obtain water dispersible dye-PC aggregates, and to follow their emission in the aqueous solutions. Structure of the dyes has strong impact on the efficacy of the dyes incorporation into the PC-based bilayers, temperature sensitivity of emission of the dye-PC aggregates and its reversibility under the heating/cooling cycles. This enables structural optimization of the dyes in order to obtain the dye-PC species demonstrating maximal temperature dependence and reversibility of their luminescence in aqueous solutions. The selected leader exhibits low cytotoxicity exemplified for M-HeLa and Chang Liver cell lines, while the efficient cell internalization of the dye, manifested in the staining of the cell cytoplasm, opens further opportunities for biosensing applications. This paper is devoted to the design of a fluorescent probe based on meso-carboxysubstituted-BODIPY with a thioterpene fragment. Verteporfin purchase The functional replacement of the methoxy group in the BODIPY molecule on a thioterpene fragment was carried out in order to find out the antiplatelet and anticoagulant action mechanisms of thioterpenoids and to assess the membrane and receptor factors contributions. The molecular structure of the conjugate was confirmed via UV/vis-, NMR- and MS-spectra. It is found that the probe is a high fluorescence quantum yield (to ∼ 100%) in the blue-green region at 509-516 nm. Molecular docking of all studied molecules showed that the BODIPY with terpenoid conjugation is an excellent way to increase their affinity to platelet receptor P2Y12.Lipid droplets (LDs), are multi-functional organelles with the storage of neutral lipids and proteins, participating in various of physiological processes. However, abnormal of LDs in morphology and numbers always lead to multiple diseases, including cancer, viral infection, obesity, inflammation. To better understand the physiological function of LDs in living cells, we designed two new fluorescent probes LDs-CA and LDs-BCA based on the triphenylamine and coumarin fluorophores to monitor LDs polarity and numbers variation in this work. The one-step strategy for the regulation of BF2 group realized a gratifying in emission wavelengths from orange fluorescence of LDs-CA to the red fluorescence of LDs-BCA, surprisingly. The two novel probes showed strong positive solvatochromism effect in different solvents and exhibited the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect. Based on the above excellent optical properties, LDs-CA and LDs-BCA were applied for imaging of the LDs with high overlap coefficient when co-stained with commercial dyes, respectively. The probes of LDs-CA and LDs-BCA provided an intuitive method to visualize the dynamic changes of LDs in morphology, size, and numbers under nutritionalstimulation, affording a powerful tool for fluorescence visualization of LDs related biological processes. Notably, the near-infrared emissive probe LDs-BCA successfully imaged the gastric fat in living obese mouse, which may provide a new idea for medical diagnostics.Terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopic (TDS) and imaging techniques have been recognized as important tools in recent times for non-contact and non-destructive evaluation of materials, such as, food, pharmaceuticals, and other composite materials of interest. The application of the THz-TDS technique in both material identification and quantification, however, involves the analyses of extremely complex response of the constituents of these composite materials. For a spectroscopist, therefore, it is essential to consider certain critical spectroscopic parameters while acquiring the spectroscopic data using THz-TDS. In this work, using sorbic acid, a widely used preservative in processed food as the typical sample for the spectroscopic measurements, we have systematically investigated the impact of all these critical factors on the spectroscopic identification, quantification, and repeatability of the same. We observed that any sample inhomogeneity or clusters formed inside the composite pellet of the sorbic acid mixed with Teflon during pellet preparation can lead to false spectral responses, depending on the choice of spectroscopic probing point on the sample and number of spectroscopic averages. Furthermore, we analyzed the THz-TDS acquisition in frequency-domain and noted the effect of pellet thickness and sample concentration on the resultant frequency bandwidth and absorption features. Besides THz spectroscopists, a clear understanding of these aspects addressed in this present work, will also assist material engineers in selecting optimum concentration and weight towards formulating advanced composites.A simple and feasible strategy was developed for the preparation of fluorescent covalent organic frameworks (COFs) TpPa-1@FL. The TpPa-1-1@FL was prepared via a self-assembly strategy by soaking non-fluorescent COFs TpPa-1 into strong fluorescent fluorescein (FL) solution. A chemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (CRET) system was constructed by the combination strong fluorescent TpPa-1@FL with TCPO-hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) reaction. The chemiluminescence (CL) signal of the system was further improved by the addition of bovine serum albumin (BSA). The CRET system can determine H2O2 with a linear range response from 5.0 µmol/L to 20.0 mmol/L and a detection limit of 1.1 µmol/L. The CRET system was further exploited for indirect detection of uric acid with coupling of uricase. A good linear relationship was obtained for uric acid in the 10.0-400.0 µmol/L concentration range with a detection limit of 3.8 µmol/L. The practicability of this method was assessed by the determination of uric acid in real samples of human serum and urine.
