The impact on psychosocial health of injectable facial treatments such as hyaluronic acid fillers and botulinum toxin type A remains poorly defined. The aim of this study was to measure changes in psychosocial health following aesthetic intervention with injectables in routine clinical practice using the validated FACE-Q patient-reported outcome measure.

This was a prospective assessment of patients presenting at a single center for the first time for aesthetic treatment of the face with injectables in February 2020. Participants completed 3 FACE-Q scales at the baseline and again 2 weeks posttreatment Psychological Function; Social Function; and Appearance-related Psychosocial Distress.

Complete data were available for 35 individuals (n = 32 women [91%]; mean age 45.9 ± 13.8 years). Twenty-nine (83%) were treated with hyaluronic acid filler (mean 2.3 ± 1.3 syringes), and 12 (34%) received onabotulinumtoxinA (mean 2.0 ± 0.7 areas of the upper face). There were significant improvements on each FACE-Q scale posttreatment mean change in Psychological Function score was +12.4 [95% CI 7.9, 16.9;
< 0.001; standardized effect size by Cohen's
0.93]; mean change in Social Function score was +7.9 (95% CI 3.3, 12.5;
= 0.001; effect size 0.50); and mean change in Appearance-related Psychosocial Distress score was -20.9 (95% CI -27.4, -14.3;
< 0.001; effect size 1.27).

Aesthetic treatment with injectables was associated with significant improvements in patient-reported psychological and social functioning and reductions in appearance-related distress. This change underlines the value of these therapies for improving psychosocial health in well-selected patients.

Plastic and reconstructive surgery has a well-recognized history of disruption and innovation. It remains unclear, however, how the specialty's priority on innovation materializes into commercialization or bench to bedside led by plastic surgeons.

Our analysis utilized Pitchbook (Seattle, Wash.), a market database of companies and investors, for ventures that have designed innovations related to plastic and reconstructive surgery. Companies were categorized into 5 focus areas provider (outpatient surgical or hospital entity), aesthetics (cosmetics/injectables), devices (instrumentation, lasers, implants), regenerative medicine (tissue engineering/wound healing), and software (digital solutions). Company websites, LinkedIn (Sunnyvale, Calif.) profiles, and Crunchbase (San Francisco, Calif.) were reviewed to determine the leadership roles of plastic surgeons.

Plastic surgeons primarily serve as advisors, as opposed to founders or chief executive officers (CEOs). Our analysis additionally found that providconstraint, lack of business knowledge, financial constraint, and opportunity cost associated with starting a venture. To promote participation in innovation, future studies should explore tangible ways to engage in such opportunities. In doing so, plastic surgeons can own the "organ" of innovation, and continue to contribute to the legacy and the advancement of the specialty.
Although traditional wound dressings such as collagen scaffolds promote granulation tissue formation, the efficacy of these dressings in chronic wounds is limited because of high susceptibility to bacterial growth. Biomaterials that can be applied to chronic wounds should have an anti-bacterial function. We previously reported that administering a silk-elastin solution that forms moisturizing hydrogels to wound surfaces of diabetic mice reduced bacterial growth and promoted granulation tissue formation compared with control or carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogels. We hypothesized that silk-elastin promotes wound healing in human chronic wounds by suppressing bacterial growth.

An open-label, clinical case series was conducted with a prospective, single-arm design at Kyoto University Hospital in Kyoto, Japan. In this study, 6 patients with chronic skin ulcers of any origin (2 < ulcer area (cm
) < 25) on their lower extremities were included; patients with critical ischemia were excluded. Silk-elastin sponges were applied and covered with a polyurethane film without changing the dressing for 14 days. Inflammation triggered treatment discontinuation due to fear of infection. The primary study endpoint was adverse events, including inflammation and infection.

Poor hydrogel formation, possibly due to continuous exudation, was observed. click here No serious adverse events were noted. Two patients discontinued treatment on day 6 and day 7, respectively, due to inflammation, but they were not infected. The other 4 patients completed the 14-day silk-elastin sponge treatment without infection.

Silk-elastin sponge is safe for chronic skin ulcers, and its ability to promote wound healing should be determined by confirmatory clinical trials.

The close relationship between plastic surgery and art is historical and is still expected by the public and our patients. This article emphasizes the many links plastic surgery has with art, and presents a few practical examples of its reverberation in aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery procedures. Based on his surgical and actual sculpting activities in the realm of contemporary art, the author elaborates on 7 contributions art education affords the plastic surgery praxis, as an incentive and a reflection of its value to the plastic surgeon's life.
Around the world, snake bite envenomation remains an underreported human health hazard. Envenomation can cause local and systemic complications, especially when there is a lack of antivenom availability. Although there are established guidelines regarding snake bite management acute care, there is a paucity of data regarding surgical intervention and the plastic surgeon's role treating this unique patient population.

A review was conducted identifying relevant published articles involving snake bite management and treatment in PubMed and EMBASE.

One hundred ten articles were identified and 77 met inclusion criteria. Snake bite envenomation can result in complications that are dependent upon a variety of variables. The literature has shown the best field treatment to be timely transportation to the nearest medical facility, along with antivenom administration. The cytotoxic, hemotoxic, and neurotoxic effects of venom can cause a variety of local soft tissue and systemic complications. Surgical interventions such as fasciotomies, wound debridements, skin grafts, and tissue flaps may be necessary in these patients to optimize functional and aesthetic outcomes. Disparities in access to care in resource limited settings are discussed.

Global health disparities and insufficient antivenom distribution create an inequality of care in snake bite patients. Plastic surgeons have an important role in managing acute and chronic complications of snake bite envenomations that can lead to improved patient outcomes.

This is a rare injury that may be challenging to diagnose, and necessitates early identification and treatment to achieve the best outcomes. We report the case of a 45-year-old male patient who was referred to our institution for large wound closure after undergoing debridement of a misdiagnosed MLL that became complicated by infection and sepsis. The patient was retrospectively diagnosed with a Stage VI MLL and had to undergo 4 operations with skin grafting and vacuum-assisted closure therapy playing an essential role in achieving tissue closure. This case was presented as a reminder of this rare diagnosis, and the importance of considering it when faced with a patient presenting with a relevant clinical picture post trauma. An early diagnosis is important because early intervention can prevent complications and lead to better outcomes. The misdiagnosis in the case of our patient and delayed treatment led to an aggressive debridement with a large wound that was challenging to close.Background The delta neutrophil index has been accepted as an inflammatory marker, especially in sepsis. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the delta neutrophil index in predicting acute and complicated appendicitis. Methods Patients aged 18 years and over who underwent appendectomy were reviewed. The demographic features, pathology results, and the delta neutrophil index, leukocyte, and C-reactive protein levels were evaluated. According to the pathology results, the patients were grouped as those having a normal appendix or acute appendicitis. Results In this study, 74 (8.1%) of the patients had a normal appendix, and 718 (86.1%) were diagnosed with simple appendicitis, and 116 (13.9%) with complicated appendicitis. In the acute appendicitis group, the leukocyte value and delta neutrophil index were found to be statistically significantly higher than in the normal appendix group. Age, C-reactive protein, and the delta neutrophil index were statistically significantly higher in the complicated appendicitis group. In the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis for the prediction of acute appendicitis, the area under the curve values for leukocyte and the delta neutrophil index were calculated as 0.780 and 0.741, respectively. In predicting complicated appendicitis, the area under the curve of the delta neutrophil index and C-reactive protein were 0.671 and 0.709, respectively. Conclusion The delta neutrophil index was more significant than leukocyte values in diagnosing acute and complicated appendicitis. We consider that the delta neutrophil index is an effective and reliable parameter in diagnosing acute appendicitis and differentiating simple/complicated appendicitis, especially when combined with the analysis of leukocyte and C-reactive protein.
