The prominent split structure of the 1sC → π* band of the cation is attributed to the interplay between the coupling of the core → π* excitation with the unpaired electron in the π-subshell and the Jahn-Teller distortion. The calculations attribute most of the splitting (∼1-1.2 eV) to the spin coupling, which is visible already at the Franck-Condon structure, and we estimate the additional splitting due to structural relaxation to be around ∼0.1-0.2 eV. These results suggest that X-ray absorption with increased resolution might be able to disentangle electronic and structural aspects of the Jahn-Teller effect in the benzene cation.Despite the recent breakthroughs of polymer solar cells (PSCs) exhibiting a power conversion efficiency of over 17%, toxic and hazardous organic solvents such as chloroform and chlorobenzene are still commonly used in their fabrication, which impedes the practical application of PSCs. Thus, the development of eco-friendly processing methods suitable for industrial-scale production is now considered an imperative research focus. This Review provides a roadmap for the design of efficient photoactive materials that are compatible with non-halogenated green solvents (e.g., xylenes, toluene, and tetrahydrofuran). We summarize the recent development of green processing solvents and the processing methods to match with the efficient photoactive materials used in non-fullerene solar cells. We further review progress in the use of more eco-friendly solvents ( i.e. , water or alcohol) for achieving truly sustainable and eco-friendly PSC fabrication. For example, the concept of water- or alcohol-dispersed nanoparticles made of conjugated materials is introduced. #link# Also, recent important progress and strategies to develop water/alcohol-soluble photoactive materials that completely eliminate the use of conventional toxic solvents are discussed. Finally, we provide our perspectives on the challenges facing the current green processing methods and materials, such as large-area coating techniques and long-term stability. We believe this Review will inform the development of PSCs that are truly clean and renewable energy sources.The fluorination/sulfofication-induced effect in the photovoltaic polymer solar cells (PSCs) needs to be paid much attention. In this work, a new donor polymer PBDB-PS2F was synthesized by heavily fluorinated and decorated S atom on the side chain of benzo[1,2-b4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) unit to explore the internal combined effect of F&S on the photoelectric performance. It was found that the heavy fluorination on the side chain could make PBDB-PS2F achieve a low highest occupied molecule orbital (HOMO) energy level of -5.72 eV and weaken the torsion of the main chain and effectively increase the intermolecular π-π* transition. Encouragingly, compared with the counterpart polymer PBDB-PS without the fluorination, PBDB-PS2F exhibited a much intense aggregation at room temperature but showed a tendency of reduced aggregation at high temperatures. This feature gives excellent solution processability and uniform morphology in the active layer of a PBDB-PS2F-based device, enabling an outstanding photovoltaic performance with the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.56% (VOC = 0.90 V, JSC = 21.53 mA/cm2, FF = 69.68%). Compared with that of the counterpart polymer PBDB-PS with no heavy fluorination, the VOC of PBDB-PS2F increased by 15.4% and the PCE increased by 30.9%. Thus, the heavy-fluorination-induced effect to construct photovoltaic polymers could be used to improve the performance of polymer solar cells.Heavy metals in industrial wastewaters are typically present as stable metal-organic complexes with their cost-effective treatment remaining a significant challenge. Herein, a self-enhanced decomplexation scenario is developed using an electrochemical membrane filtration (EMF) system for efficient decomplexation and Cu recovery. Using Cu-EDTA as a model pollutant, the EMF system achieved 81.5% decomplexation of the Cu-EDTA complex and 72.4% recovery of Cu at a cell voltage of 3 V. The •OH produced at the anode first attacked Cu-EDTA to produce intermediate Cu-organic complexes that reacted catalytically with the H2O2 generated from the reduction of dissolved oxygen at the cathode to initiate chainlike self-enhanced decomplexation in the EMF system. The decomplexed Cu products were further reduced or precipitated at the cathodic membrane surface thereby achieving efficient Cu recovery. By scavenging H2O2 (excluding self-enhanced decomplexation), the rate of decomplexation decreased from 8.8 × 10-1 to 4.1 × 10-1 h-1, confirming the important role of self-enhanced decomplexation in this system. The energy efficiency of this system is 93.5 g kWh-1 for Cu-EDTA decomplexation and 15.0 g kWh-1 for Cu recovery, which is much higher than that reported in the previous literature (i.e., 7.5 g kWh-1 for decomplexation and 1.2 g kWh-1 for recovery). Our results highlight the potential of using EMF for the cost-effective treatment of industrial wastewaters containing heavy metals.
South Africa has the highest prevalence of HIV in the world. The epidemiology of kidney disease among people with HIV infections is well-described in the United States. However, there are limited data coming from South Africa, particularly that involve kidney biopsies. link2 The purpose of this study was to determine what, if any, patient factors are predictive of HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN) on kidney biopsy in a South African kidney biopsy cohort.

This study prospectively collected data of all patients infected with HIV referred to the Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) renal unit for a kidney biopsy from 2002 to 2018.

There were 419 patients included in the study. Mean age was 36.5 years (SD, 9.4); 219 (52.3%) were women; and all were black. Seventy-nine patients (18.9%) were on dialysis at the time of biopsy; the mean estimated glomerular filtration rate among the remainder was 41.4 ml/min per 1.73 m
(SD, 39.2). Only 163 patients (47.1%) were known to be taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) at the time othe setting of greater ART availability.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a major cause of mortality worldwide, particularly in low-resource settings with limited diagnostic testing. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) has shown promise in predicting AKI. Nested within a larger, prospective cohort study evaluating AKI incidence in admitted trauma patients, our objective was to evaluate a novel dipstick, NGALds, for the prediction of AKI in Malawi, Africa.

Participants were >6 months of age. Spearman rank correlation coefficients (
) assessed NGAL categories (negative [≤50 ng/ml], low risk [51-149 ng/ml], moderate risk [150-299 ng/ml], and high risk [≥300 ng/ml]) for the urine NGALds dipstick and laboratory-based NGAL Test.

We enrolled 285 participants (one-third children). Thirteen percent developed AKI. The dipstick captured 45 of 52 participants (86.5%) with moderate- or high-risk NGAL values on laboratory-based testing (
= 0.74). The dipstick had sensitivity of 44.4%, specificity of 73.5%, positive predictive value of 19.5%, and negative predictive value of 90.2% for predicting AKI. Acute kidney injury was associated with an increased risk of mortality (relative risk [RR]= 3.9, 95% confidence interval [CI]= 1.9-8.2), but mortality risk greatly increased among children who first had a positive (≥150 ng/ml) NGALds result (RR= 12.0, 95% CI= 1.8-78.4).

The NGALds dipstick performed similarly to the NGAL Test in this low-resource setting and may be a useful tool to rule out AKI. It may be even more important in predicting high mortality risk among children.

Primary membranous nephropathy (MN) is characterized by the presence of antipodocyte antibodies, but studies describing phenotypic and functional abnormalities in circulating lymphocytes are limited.

We analyzed 68 different B- and T-cell subsets using flow cytometry in 30 MN patients (before initiating immunosuppression) compared with 31 patients with non-immune-mediated chronic kidney disease (CKD) and 12 healthy individuals. was higher than reported. Survival curves in the subgroups (<16th, ∼16th to<50th, ∼50th to<84th, and≥84th percentiles of linear predictor) were well separated. Most of the predictor variables, including hazard ratio, predicted 5-year risk, and eGFR decline slope, were worse with risk increasing. The baseline survival function was comparable in our cohort and the reported cohorts. The calibration was acceptable for the full model without race. However, the risk probability over 3 years was overestimated in the full model with race included.

Most guidelines in different countries recommend waiting more than 2 weeks for the initial cannulation of an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) after its creation. Although an experienced examiner can subjectively determine if an AVF is ready for early cannulation, there is a lack of objective information to guide whether early cannulation is appropriate or how early cannulation may affect an AVF's primary patency. The current study examined the relationship between the initial cannulation and the prognosis of AVF, considering ultrasonography (US) findings.

This retrospective observational study enrolled 103 patients with end-stage renal disease who had started hemodialysis therapy from 2013 to 2015 at the Juntendo University Hospital. All patients had been given a primary AVF before or after the initiation of dialysis, had undergone US examinations both before and 7 days after surgery, had initially cannulated the AVF at≥7 days after surgery, and were observed for over 1 year.

The factor associated with the loss of primary patency was a resistance index of brachial artery≥0.
