BACKGROUND Nursing students tend not to consider their career paths during their college years but if they enter nursing without having established a career identity during college, they will have low job satisfaction and high turnover intentions. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a career efficacy enhancement program on nursing students' career decision, identity, preparation behavior, and efficacy. DESIGN A two-group, quasi-experimental design was used. SETTING The study took place at two universities in South Korea. PARTICIPANTS Overall, 69 baccalaureate nursing students participated. METHODS Two program booklets and a workbook were developed for a career efficacy enhancement program that ran in 2018. Data were collected at three timepoints and analyzed using a Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, and a repeated measures ANOVA. RESULTS Career identity differed significantly between groups (p = 0.005), measurement times (p = 0.000), and in the interaction between groups and measurement times (p = 0.000). Career decision differed significantly between groups (p = 0.009), measurement times (p = 0.013), and in the interaction between groups and measurement times (p = 0.002). Career preparation behavior did not differ significantly between groups (p = 0.550) but did differ significantly between measurement times (p = 0.000) and in the interaction between groups and measurement times (p = 0.001). Career efficacy did not differ significantly between groups (p = 0.213) but did differ significantly between measurement times (p = 0.000) and in the interaction between groups and measurement times (p = 0.000). CONCLUSION The career efficacy enhancement program improved nursing students' career decision skills, identities, preparation behavior, and efficacy. BACKGROUND Despite the proliferation of diverse teaching methods, it is uncertain which teaching components have enhanced students' approach to learning and in what way these components have produced positive outcomes. OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to examine how the students' perceptions of learning activities, the acquisition of relevant knowledge, and educators' enthusiasm/supportive attitudes impact on the students' adoption of the deep approach to learning. DESIGN A multisite cross-sectional design. SETTINGS Two universities in Japan. PARTICIPANTS Undergraduate nursing students (n = 154). METHODS Questionnaires, which included the Teaching Approach Scale and the Japanese version of the Learning Approach Scale, were given to the students. Data were analysed by path analysis. RESULTS The students' perceptions of learning activities were positively related to their use of a deep approach to learning. Moreover, this relationship was completely mediated by their perceptions of knowledge acquisition and educators' enthusiastic and supportive attitudes. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest that learning activities must be reinforced by appropriate educator support that enables students to acquire relevant knowledge and feel that learning is interesting and enjoyable. Without such support, interest and active engagement incurred by learning activities may quickly disappear, and learning activities may not lead to a change in the students' approach to learning. OBJECTIVE To examine factors differentiating individuals whose first suicide attempt was during childhood (ages 5-12 yrs) from those who first attempted suicide during adolescence (13-19 yrs) and during adulthood (≥20 yrs). METHOD A sample of 418 participants (ages 18-64 yrs) with a mood disorder and ≥1 lifetime suicide attempt was divided into three groups according to age of first suicide attempt (childhood N = 43, adolescent N = 149, adulthood N = 226) and compared on demographics, childhood adversity, parental psychopathology, comorbid lifetime axis I diagnoses, self-harm and characteristics of first attempt. RESULTS Participants in the Childhood Attempt group were more likely to report childhood adversity, parental alcohol use disorder and subsequent suicide attempts than the two other groups. They were also more likely to have a depressed mother, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) during childhood and adolescence, lifetime PTSD and aggressive behavior than the Adulthood Attempt group. The Adolescent Attempt group had more childhood adversity, parental suicidal behavior, lifetime PTSD and NSSI during adolescence than the Adulthood Attempt group. The groups differed on methods of first attempt, and its lethality was related to age of attempt. CONCLUSIONS Early adversity and parental psychopathology are particularly prominent in those who make childhood suicide attempts, suggesting that this group may represent a suicidal behavior subtype. The aim of this study was to determine imidacloprid's lethal activity against fifth-instar nymphs of Triatoma infestans. In the first stage of this work, it was assayed the topical application of this insecticide on non-fed and repletion-fed nymphs. Results showed a DL50 three times greater in non-fed bugs than in those fully engorged. The presence of food determined less time for the insecticide's maximum lethal effect 24 h post topical application in fed nymphs and 72 h in non-fed nymphs. Following administration of the insecticide, nymphs were fed on dogs 24, 72, 168, 240 and 336 h. Blood intake was similar in nymphs exposed to treated dogs versus controls. Although both commercial products showed low triatomicidal activity, a higher efficacy of the product combining imidacloprid with the synergist piperonyl butoxide and permethrin versus the product with imidacloprid as the only active ingredient was observed, causing in nymphs a mortality rate of 36.
