Patterns are essential tools in the production of metal castings of all shapes and sizes, as they create mold cavities into which molten metal can be poured to form its final product. Most commonly made out of cheap yet easy-to-work-with materials such as plastic or wood (although metal for high precision parts can sometimes be used), patterns should also be designed as reusable forms.

Construction of patterns may differ, but all must be constructed precisely in order to withstand the intense temperatures and pressures involved with casting. Furthermore, accurate specifications must be met so as to produce consistently acceptable castings.
