Humans tend to shift attention according to others' eye-gaze direction. This is a core ability as it permits to create pervasive relationships among individuals and with the environment around them. In the beginning, this form of social orienting was considered a reflexive phenomenon, but in recent years evidence has shown that it is also permeable to several social factors related to the observer, the individual depicted in the cueing face, and the relationship between them. The major goal of this work is to provide a comprehensive overview concerning the role that social variables can play in shaping covert gaze cueing in healthy adults, critically examining both the modulatory social factors for which evidence is more robust and those for which evidence is mixed. When available, overt attention studies will also be discussed. Finally, a novel theoretical framework linking these social and attention domains will be also introduced.Synesthesia is a condition in which the perception of a stimulus in one modality automatically triggers a secondary sensation in another modality or processing stream. Our study focused on grapheme-color synesthesia, in which the visual perception of letters or numbers (graphemes) induces a specific color sensation (the synesthetic color). Grapheme-color synesthetes do not typically experience colors for novel graphemes. However, synesthetic colors associated with familiar graphemes can be transferred to graphemes learned later, even in adulthood. A previous study has shown that such a transfer can take place after only a 10-min writing exercise. In this study, we found that this immediate transfer occurs only when the synesthetic colors for familiar graphemes contribute to the discrimination of the graphemes to be learned. Synesthetes learned six novel graphemes, each of which was arbitrarily associated with one of six familiar graphemes. Half of the synesthetes were assigned to the heterogeneous condition, in which the synesthetic colors of one group of familiar graphemes were different from one another. The other half of the synesthetes were assigned to the homogeneous condition, in which the various colors of a whole group of familiar graphemes were categorically the same. After this learning session, less transfer of synesthetic colors to novel graphemes from the corresponding familiar graphemes occurred in the homogeneous condition than in the heterogeneous condition. These results support the view that synesthetic colors for graphemes may function as a grapheme acquisition aid.PURPOSE This is a comprehensive review of the current literature on central neuropathic pain mechanisms that is secondary to spinal cord injury. It reviews recent and seminal findings on the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment and compares treatment options and recommendations. RECENT FINDINGS Neuropathic pain (NP) is a common complication of spinal cord injury (SCI). Chronicity of NP is attributed to increased abundance of inflammatory mediators and ion channel dysfunction leading to afferent nerve sensitization; nerve damage and nerve-glia cross talk have also been implicated. Conventional treatment is medical and has had limited success. Recent studies have made headway in identifying novel biomarkers, including microRNA and psychosocial attributes that can predict progress from SCI to chronic NP (CNP). Recent advances have provided evidence of efficacy for two promising drugs. Baclofen was able to provide good, long-lasting pain relief. Ziconotide, a voltage-gated calcium channel blocker, was studieicult to treat syndrome.Microbiota are increasingly studied, providing more precise information on their important role in physiologic processes. They also influence some pathologic processes, such as NSAID-induced enteropathy. This side effect is much more diffuse than it has been described in the past. It derives mainly from the local action of the medicines and is caused by the local binding of gram-negative bacterial lipopolysaccharides and infiltration of neutrophils into the intestinal mucosa. The initial interest in the interaction between these damages and microbiota is very old, but new and interesting data are available. This review aims to focus on recent studies on NSAID-induced enteropathy, an often-underestimated medical condition, and on the influence of microbiota on this condition. Apart from the broadly investigated use of antibiotics and other mucosal protective solutions, this systematic review focuses mostly on the use of probiotics, which directly influence intestinal microflora. Other important factors influencing NSAID-induced enteropathy, such as sex, advanced age, infection and use of proton pump inhibitors, are also discussed.Functionalized ordered mesoporous carbon (MOMC-NP) was synthesized by chemical modification using HNO3 and H3PO4 to enhance Pb(II) adsorption. The phosphate functional group represented by P-O-C bonding onto the surface of OMC was verified by FT-IR and XPS. Batch adsorption experiments revealed the improvement of adsorption capacity by 39 times over the virgin OMC. Moreover, the Pb(II) adsorption results provided excellent fits to Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption mechanism of Pb(II) onto MOMC-NP revealed the formation of metal complexes with carboxyl, hydroxyl, and phosphate groups through ion exchange reactions and hydrogen bondings. The calculated activation energy was 22.09 kJ/mol, suggesting that Pb(II) adsorption was a chemisorption. At pH>pHpzc, the main Pb(II) existing species of Pb(II) and Pb(OH)+ combine with the carboxyl, hydroxyl, and phosphate functional groups via electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. All these findings demonstrated that MOMC-NP could be a useful and potential adsorbent for adsorptive removal of Pb(II). Limited studies have been conducted in China, but their results were inconsistent. So, we conducted a time-series study to evaluate the acute effect of six air pollutants (fine particulate matter [PM2.5], particulate matter with diameter less than 10 μm [PM10], sulfur dioxide [SO2], nitrogen dioxide [NO2], ozone [O3], and carbon monoxide [CO]) on hospital outpatient visits for AR in Xinxiang, China from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2018. An over-dispersed Poisson generalized additive model adjusting for weather conditions, long-term trends, and day of the week was used. In total, 14,965 AR outpatient records were collected during the study period. Results found that each 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, O3, and CO corresponded to 0.70% (95% confidence interval 0.
