The atmospheric oxidation of sulfur dioxide by the parent and dimethyl Criegee intermediates (CIs) may be an important source of sulfuric acid aerosol, which has a large impact on radiative forcing and therefore upon climate. A number of computational studies have considered how the CH2OOS(O)O heteroozonide (HOZ) adduct formed in the CI + SO2 reaction converts SO2 to SO3. In this work we use the CBS-QB3 quantum chemical method along with equation-of-motion spin-flip CCSD(dT) and MCG3 theories to reveal new details regarding the formation and decomposition of the endo and exo conformers of the HOZ. Although ∼75% of the parent CI + SO2 reaction is initiated by formation of the exo HOZ, hyperconjugation preferentially stabilizes many of the endo intermediates and transition structures by 1-5 kcal mol(-1). Our quantum chemical calculations, in conjunction with statistical rate theory models, predict a rate coefficient for the parent CI + SO2 reaction of 3.68 × 10(-11) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1), in good agreement with recent experimental measurements. selleck products RRKM/master equation simulations based on our quantum chemical data predict a prompt carbonyl + SO3 yield of >95% for the reaction of both the parent and dimethyl CI with SO2. The existence of concerted cycloreversion transition structures 10-15 kcal mol(-1) higher in energy than the HOZ accounts for most of the predicted SO3 formation.Interest in artificial solid-state molecular rotator systems is growing as they enable systems to be designed for achieving specific physical functions. The phase transition behavior of four halomesitylene crystals indicated dynamic in-plane molecular rotator characteristics in dibromoiodomesitylene, tribromomesitylene, and dibromomesitylene crystals. Such molecular rotation in diiodomesitylene crystals was suppressed by effective I···I intermolecular interactions. The in-plane molecular rotation accompanied by a change in dipole moment resulted in dielectric phase transitions in polar dibromoiodomesitylene and dibromomesitylene crystals. No dielectric anomaly was observed for the in-plane molecular rotation of tribromomesitylene in the absence of this dipole moment change. Typical antiferroelectric-paraelectric phase transitions were observed in the dibromomesitylene crystal, whereas the dielectric anomaly of dibromoiodomesitylene crystals was associated with the collective in-plane molecular rotation of polar π-molecules in the π-stack. We found that the single-rope-like collective in-plane molecular rotator was dominated by intermolecular I···I interactions along the π-stacking column of polar dibromoiodomesitylene.The intracellular distribution of fluorescently labeled copper and zinc bis(thiosemicarbazonato) complexes was investigated in M17 neuroblastoma cells and primary cortical neurons with a view to providing insights into the neuroprotective activity of a copper bis(thiosemicarbazonato) complex known as Cu(II)(atsm). Time-resolved fluorescence measurements allowed the identification of the Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes as well as the free ligand inside the cells by virtue of the distinct fluorescence lifetime of each species. Confocal fluorescent microscopy of cells treated with the fluorescent copper(II)bis(thiosemicarbazonato) complex revealed significant fluorescence associated with cytoplasmic puncta that were identified to be lysosomes in primary cortical neurons and both lipid droplets and lysosomes in M17 neuroblastoma cells. Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy confirmed that the fluorescence signal emanating from the lipid droplets could be attributed to the copper(II) complex but also that some degree of loss of the metal ion led to diffuse cytosolic fluorescence that could be attributed to the metal-free ligand. The accumulation of the copper(II) complex in lipid droplets could be relevant to the neuroprotective activity of Cu(II)(atsm) in models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is one of the most commonly reported nosocomial pathogens in the United States and Europe, with recent CDI-associated mortality in the United States approaching 30 000 deaths annually. Antibiotics remain the preferred treatment for CDI; however, a minority of patients experience numerous relapses and are treated with restoration of the bowel microbiota, termed fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). FMT involves the introduction of a fecal suspension from a healthy donor into the gut of the infected patient to cure the CDI and replace depleted components of the gut microbiota. FMT is particularly effective and safe in curing CDI, using a colonoscope or enema to deliver 1 to 2 infusions. Given that 6425 CDIs were reported in Poland in 2014, practicing physicians should understand the benefits and limitations of FMT in CDI as this novel therapy has rapidly advanced to the level of the "standard-of-care" status in Australia, the United States, and many parts of Europe. FMT has been administered either as a suspension in saline, a highly refined liquid product which can be frozen, as lyophilized powder in capsules, and as an encapsulated spore preparation. The ultimate products to reach the market will be shaped by the indications approved by regulatory bodies. At present, the fecal suspension in saline remains the treatment of choice to terminate relapsing and severe CDI, which we will review here. The use of FMT for non-CDI indications, such as inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome, is likely to increase. At present, these indications remain in the domain of research institutions.
Nasal polyposis (NP) is an inflammatory disease of the upper nasal airways frequently present in CF patients. Interferon-Related Developmental Regulator 1 (IFRD1) gene was reported as a possible modifier of CF lung disease severity. Three IFRD1 SNPs were analyzed to investigate a possible effect on the development of NP in CF patients.
The DNA of 143 patients with CF (40 with and 103 without NP) was purified from peripheral blood samples. IFRD1 SNPs (rs7817, rs3807213, rs6968084) were genotyped by restriction enzyme analysis.
The T allele of the common polymorphisms rs7817 and the rs7817-rs3807213 haplotype were associated with NP (p = 0.002 and 0.004, respectively).

The aim of the study was to determine the differential expression patterns of the wingless-type (Wnt) pathway inhibitors Dkk3 (Dickkopf 3), SFRP1 (secreted frizzled-related protein 1), and SFRP4 in normal müllerian tissue and endometrial endometrioid adenocarcinoma specimens.
Messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein levels of the Wnt pathway inhibitors Dkk3, SFRP1, and SFRP4 were evaluated by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis. A total of 87 human tissue specimens were obtained from 60 women who participated in Gynecologic Oncology Group protocol 210. Twenty-seven normal müllerian tissues, 32 early-stage, and 28 advanced-stage endometrial endometrioid cancer specimens were analyzed.
Median age for this cohort was 60 years, with median body mass index of 32 kg/m. There was a difference in Dkk3 protein expression between normal müllerian tissues and primary endometrial endometrioid adenocarcinoma samples (P = 0.05). There was down-regulation of Dkk3, SFRP1, and SFRest a therapeutic role for Wnt signaling in endometrial cancer.
The aims of this study were to evaluate prospectively the safety and feasibility of laparoscopic lymphadenectomy in gynecologic oncology and to analyze risk factors associated with surgical adverse events.
This study included 444 consecutive laparoscopic lymphadenectomy procedures conducted in 358 consecutive gynecologic oncology patients, between 2007 and 2014. Surgical adverse events were classified into intraoperative, early postoperative (≤6 weeks after surgery), and late postoperative (>6 weeks after surgery). Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the independent effects of different variables on the probability of complications. Differences were considered to be statistically significant for P values less than 0.05.
Two hundred forty-four pelvic lymphadenectomy and 200 aortic lymphadenectomy procedures were carried out during the studied period. All pelvic lymphadenectomy procedures were conducted with a transperitoneal approach, whereas 94.5% of aortic lymphadenectomy procedures wereodds ratio, 2.6; 95% confidence interval, 1-6.7; P = 0.04).
Laparoscopic lymphadenectomy is a safe and feasible procedure in gynecologic oncology but not free of complications. We postulate that gynecologic oncologists should be properly trained in the management of such complications and be aware of the importance of adequate hemostasis and operating time during surgery.

Extensive (ultraradical) surgery may facilitate complete cytoreduction in ovarian cancer with potential survival benefit but with greater morbidity. Currently, patient-reported outcomes (PROs) from such surgery are unknown. We conducted the Surgery in Ovarian Cancer Quality of life Evaluation Research study (SOCQER 1), a prospective study investigating the feasibility of collection of serial PROs in patients who had extensive surgery and standard surgery for ovarian cancer.
Ninety-three patients were recruited for 33 months to complete serial PRO assessments using the validated EORTC QLQ-C30 and the ovarian cancer-specific QLQ-OV28 questionnaires preoperatively, at 6 weeks, and at 3, 6, and 9 months postoperatively. Aletti Surgical Complexity Score of 3 or lower was considered standard surgery; a Surgical Complexity Score of 4 or higher was considered extensive surgery. Prospective data collection was obtained from the hospital electronic database, including patient demographics, American Society of Anaesthesiologists grade, preoperative serum CA125 and albumin levels, chemotherapy regimen, and surgical morbidity.
Three cohorts of patients--32 benign, 32 undergoing standard surgery, and 24 undergoing extensive surgery--completed the questionnaires. Median questionnaire completion rate in this study was 64%, demonstrating the feasibility of longitudinal quality of life (QoL) assessment after surgery. Patient-reported outcomes revealed a falling trend in QoL in the short-term (6 weeks-3 months) after surgery, which gradually returned to baseline at 6 to 9 months; this trend was more marked after extensive surgery.
This study provides useful insight into the impact of extensive surgery on patients. Further multicenter studies are needed to evaluate the impact of extensive surgery on patient's QoL and survival.
