There has been exponential growth in research on emotion regulation and substance use in the past decade. The current meta-analysis evaluated variability in the magnitude of the relation between aspects of emotion regulation and substance use. A search of PsycINFO, Embase, PubMed, CINAHL Plus, and PILOTS in December 2020 resulted in 6642 initial studies, of which 95 met inclusion criteria (association between emotion regulation and substance use was reported, participants were > 18 years old, article was in English). A total of 445 effects were obtained (N = 156,025 participants; weighted Mage = 29.31; 59.5% female; 66.1% White; 76.6% non-clinical). Emotion regulation and substance use were significantly related (r = 0.19; p less then 0.001; 95%CI [0.17, 0.20]). Emotion regulation abilities were generally more strongly related to substance use than emotion regulation strategies; this pattern was stronger for behavioral vs. cognitive abilities and extended to both negative and positive emotions. Selleck NVP-BSK805 Relations were stronger for older and clinical samples; mixed effects were found for sex and no conclusive effects were found for race. Despite limitations of the existing literature (e.g., cross-sectional, self-reports), results indicated that the magnitude of the relation between emotion regulation and substance use varied considerably as a function of emotion regulation and substance use constructs and sample characteristics.
Alcohol consumption is a leading preventable risk factor for morbidity and mortality in China. Understanding drinking patterns provides important data to inform public health policies in alcohol control, especially in specific groups like university students. This study aims to assess the alcohol consumption patterns and level of use in an urban population and a university town in a Chinese city using wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE).

Daily wastewater sample was collected from an urban catchment (n=270) and every Wednesday's sample from a university town of 10 university campus (n=43) in 2017-2018. Concentration of alcohol consumption biomarker in wastewater, ethyl sulfate, was measured by direct injection LC-MS/MS analysis. Per capita daily alcohol consumption was then back calculated for assessment purposes.

Per capita daily alcohol consumption was 1.4±0.6mL/ person aged 15+/day (EPD) (range 0.2-4.9) in the urban catchment and 1.3±0.6 EPD (range 0.3-2.6) in the university town. Trends of alcohol coadapted to reflect this pattern of drinking.
France accounts for one of the highest levels of recreational cannabis use, with almost 40% of youth aged 17 reporting having experimented with cannabis. We investigated the impact of early cannabis experimentation (defined as first-time use ≤ 16 years) on future probability of unemployment in young to mid-adulthood using a longitudinal, community sample over the span of 9 years.

Data were obtained from the French TEMPO Cohort study, set up in 2009 among young adults aged 22-25 years old. Participants who reported information on age of cannabis experimentation and employment status in at least one study wave (2009, 2011, 2015 and 2018) were included in the statistical analyses (N=1487, 61.2% female).

In A-IPW-adjusted analyses, early cannabis experimenters (≤ 16 years) had 1.71 (95% CI 1.46-2.02) times higher odds of experiencing unemployment compared to late cannabis experimenters (> 16 years) and 2.40 (95% CI 2.00 - 2.88) times higher odds of experiencing unemployment compared to non-experimenters. Late cannabis experimenters experienced 1.39 (95% CI 1.17-1.68) times higher odds of being unemployed compared to non-experimenters, and early cannabis experimenters experienced 3.84 (95%CI 2.73-5.42) times higher odds of experiencing long-term unemployment (defined as unemployed at least twice) compared to non-experimenters.

Participants who ever used cannabis, especially at or before the age of 16, had higher odds of experiencing unemployment, even when accounting for many psychological, academic and family characteristics which preceded cannabis initiation.

Many drug users are not receiving treatment for their drug use. Little is known about drug users not receiving treatment, as they are difficult to identify and recruit for research.

We identified 479 autopsied decedents with illegal/unmarketed drug or opioid agonist treatment positive toxicological screenings from 2015 to 2016 in Denmark. Toxicological screenings from autopsy, and information on treatment status at time of death, health care utilization, educational attainment, employment status and prescription drug use from Danish national health registers were used for comparison between groups.

Drug users not in treatment constituted 63.3% of the study population and died at a younger age than those in treatment (41 vs. 44 years). Fatal overdose was the most common cause of death in both groups. Nearly thrice as many drug users not in treatment died from somatic causes compared with drug users in treatment (18.2% vs. 6.8%). On average, drug users not in treatment received fewer prescriptions prior to their deaths than those in treatment, but non-prescribed medications were equally prevalent among both groups (74.3% vs. 81.3%) except for non-prescribed methadone which was significantly less prevalent among drug users not in treatment (33.3% vs. 42.6%).

Two-thirds of decedents were not in treatment at time of death. Drug users not in treatment died more often from somatic causes compared to those in treatment. Decedents had equal amounts of non-prescribed psychotropic medication in the blood, but non-prescribed methadone was more common among those in treatment at the time of death.

Therefore, the functional teat is an important component in prolific goat breeding, and plays a key role in the future health of their kids. With this motivation, we wanted to investigate the phenotypic features, litter size, histology of adult female mammary glands, and the gene expression profile of the fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2) gene in goats. To illustrate this, the initial dataset of the current study consists of an electronic questionnaire that includes 697 individuals (548 does and 149 bucks) of five endemic and three exotic goats from 2015 to 2020 in different geographic areas of Iran, from 59 Markhoz (MARG), 50 Azari (AZAR), 73 Busheri (BUSH), 69 Sarbisheh (SARB), 165 Mahabadi (MOHA) indigenous goats and also exotic breeds, including 183 Saanen (SANN), 39 Alpine (ALPN), and 59 Boer (BORE) goats. The results of this study confirmed that MOHA goats (4.16%), BORE (4.43%) and SANN goat breeds (5.75%) have larger litter sizes. Interestingly, the evidence gathering when SNTs occurred showed that both the BUSH and BORE goat breeds had the highest frequency of SNTs. Moreover, under the same physiological and lactation conditions, there was no statistically significant difference in histological features between the three compared does class consist of the two teats, SNTs, and four functional teats. In addition, the results of the gene expression profile significantly highlight the FGF-2 gene pattern in two teat groups compared to other SNT groups (P less then 0.01). In summary, this scenario can be used to generate further research and facts on responsible candidate genes, the variations in teat numbers in goats, examining both the incidence of SNT and litter size.Maturation of oocytes and early embryo development are regulated precisely by numerous factors at transcriptional and posttranslational levels through precise mechanisms. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most common modification in mRNA which regulates RNA metabolism and gene expression. However, the role of RNA m6A on porcine oocyte maturation and early embryogenesis is largely unknown. Here, we found that oocytes treated with cycloleucine (CL), an RNA m6A inhibitor, express impaired cumulus expansion, increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the mitochondria, and delayed maturation of oocytes by disrupting spindle organization and chromosome alignment. Also, CL halted the development of embryos at the 4-cell stage and resulted in low-quality blastocysts. Furthermore, CL treatment decreased the RNA m6A, H3K4me3, and H3K9me3 levels, but increased the acetylation level of H4K16 during parthenogenetic embryonic development in pigs. Single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) analysis further revealed that CL treatment dramatically up-regulated the expression of metabolism-related genes (SLC16A1, and MAIG3 etc.) and maternal related genes, including BTG4, WEE2, and BMP15 among others, at the blastocyst stage. Taken together, inhibition of RNA m6A by CL impaired meiosis of oocytes and early embryonic development of porcine via RNA m6A methylation, histone modifications, and altering the expression of metabolism-related genes in blastocysts. In mammals, oxidative stress-induced apoptosis of granulosa cells is one of the major causes of follicular atresia, affecting ovarian physiological function. Protegrin-1 (PG-1) is an antimicrobial peptide with effective antimicrobial activity, immunomodulatory function, and porcine growth-promoting effects. PG-1 has been detected in porcine ovaries follicles. This study aimed to investigate the effect of PG-1 on oxidative stress-induced apoptosis of porcine ovarian granulosa cells and the underlying molecular mechanism. Granulosa cells were obtained from porcine follicles and treated with H2O2 to establish the oxidative stress model, and then treated with or without PG-1 (10 μg/mL). PG-1 significantly suppressed H2O2-induced apoptosis in granulosa cells after 24 h of treatment. Furthermore, these results revealed that PG-1 increased the mRNA and protein expression of anti-apoptotic B cell lymphoma/leukemia 2 (BCL2) and the BCL2/Bcl-2-associated X protein (BAX) ratio while decreasing the expression of pro-apoptotic BAX and active caspase-3. Using Western blot analysis, it was found that PG-1 decreased the phosphorylation of RNA-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK) and the α-subunit of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2α) as well as the protein expression level of CCAAT enhancer-binding protein homologous protein (CHOP), all of which were increased by H2O2. Moreover, inhibitors against PERK and phospho-eIF2ɑ both suppressed the H2O2-induced granulosa cells apoptosis and enhanced the anti-apoptosis effect of PG-1. Taken together, our findings demonstrated that PG-1 inhibited porcine ovarian granulosa cell apoptosis from oxidative stress via the PERK/eIF2α/CHOP signaling pathway in vitro, which suggests the novel regulatory function of the antimicrobial peptide in the ovary.
