These results show the importance of providing antibiotics correctly in intensive care units and following antibiotic stewardship protocols as the only effective strategies to attempt to control antibiotic resistance in healthcare settings.Today an alternative approach to control bacterial infections is the use of natural and traditional plant compounds to interfere with their quorum-sensing (QS) systems. In this study, antibacterial and anti-QS sensing activity of Syzygium aromaticum, Dionysia revoluta Boiss. and Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. were evaluated. These plants are local to the Middle East region and have since ancient times been used for their antibacterial activity. Plant compounds were extracted with n-hexane, methanol and 96% ethanol mixed solvent. Antibacterial activity of this herbal extracts against five Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria were assessed. The effective sub-minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of this extract on bacterial QS systems were investigated by a violacein quantification assay in the Chromobacterium violaceum CV026 biosensor strain, inhibition of exogenously QS signal molecules in Aeromonas veronii bv. Sobria strain BC88 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from a patient with cystic fibrosis in vitro. Results found that Syzygium aromaticum 0.39 to 0.048 mg/mL, Dionysia revoluta Boiss. 3.1 to 0.39 mg/mL and E. camaldulensis 0.78 to 0.097 mg/mL showed anti-QS activities by reducing the violacein formation depletion of QS signals produced in A. veronii and P. aeruginosa at sub-MICs. Regarding the anti-QS effects of these herbal extracts, their effective components may be candidates for use in combating bacterial infections at sub-MICs.Tracheobronchial stenosis due to tuberculosis (TSTB) is a potentially debilitating complication of endobronchial tuberculosis (EBTB). Endobronchial interventions including silicone stent insertion is an acceptable approach to improve quality of life among patients with TSTB. However, little is known about the optimal management strategy for patients with bronchomalacia secondary to EBTB (B-EBTB) and whether stent-related complication rates are higher among this group of patients. Herein, we report two patients with B-EBTB who unfortunately developed bronchial tear related to silicone endobronchial stenting. Both patients were successfully managed conservatively without the need for emergency open surgery. We hypothesize that endobronchial intervention might be more beneficial for patients with pure TSTB and might be riskier in cases of bronchomalacia with reduced airway thickness and loss of airway cartilaginous support. Computed tomography chest demonstrated adenopathy on both sides of the diaphragm and patchy consolidation in a peribronchovascular and subpleural distribution with lower zone predominance. Axillary node biopsy revealed low-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Lung biopsy showed AFOP but no lymphoma. Complete pulmonary and neoplastic responses were achieved with bendamustine-rituximab. Inflammatory cascade is believed to be a causative factor in the development of atherosclerotic process. Several aspects of atherogenesis are accelerated by cytokines. This article provides an overall overview of current understanding of cytokines in various cardiovascular events. Besides, inflammatory cytokines trigger cellular events that can induce malignancy and carcinogenesis. Elevated expression of several cytokines such as interleukin-1, interleukin-6, interleukin-10, tumor necrosis factor-α, macrophage migration inhibitory factor and transforming growth factor-β are involved in tumor initiation and progression. Thus, they exert a pivotal role in cancer pathogenesis. This review highlights the role of several cytokines in various events of tumorigenesis. Actually, this article summarizes the contributions of cytokines in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease and cancer.Cervical adenocarcinoma is associated with a poor prognosis, which may be caused by the infiltrative growth pattern and metastasis of tumor cells. There is a lack of consensus on hysterectomy after radiotherapy for the improvement of selected cases. The present study aimed to assess the oncological outcome of post-radiotherapy hysterectomy in females with cervical adenocarcinoma. A total of 39 females with cervical adenocarcinoma at stages IB1 to IIIB, managed primarily with radiotherapy with complete response, and underwent extrafascial hysterectomy as consolidation therapy between 1988 to 2015 were studied. Surgery complications and residual disease were evaluated. A comparison group was constructed, comprising 41 females with cervical adenocarcinoma managed with exclusive radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy demonstrating complete response, without surgery. Descriptive and survival analysis was performed. The groups were comparable in terms of age, cancer stage, radiotherapy (dose and duration) and follow-up, although 67% of hysterectomies were performed prior to 2002 and 46% of the radiotherapy group received chemoradiation. Late complications were similar. There were nine recurrences (23%) in the case series and 10 recurrences (24%) in the radiotherapy group. Residual disease was detected in 56% (22/39) of uterine specimens, of which 12 were up to 10 mm. Residual disease was associated with recurrence (31% vs. 6%, P=0.028). The overall survival rate was 75% for the case series vs. 88% for the radiotherapy group (P=0.579), and the disease-free survival rate was 79-80% for both. Removal of residual disease by hysterectomy did not improve the overall survival rate (P=0.283) and disease-free survival rate (P=0.072). Post-radiotherapy hysterectomy in cervical adenocarcinoma is a feasible procedure with acceptable complications, however, it did not bring relevant benefits in recurrences, disease-free survival, and overall survival rates.
