Varroa destructor is an ectoparasitic mite of immature and adult honey bees that can transmit several single-stranded RNA viruses to its host. Varroa reproduce in brood cells, and mite populations increase as colonies produce brood in spring and summer. Mite numbers also can sharply rise, particularly in the fall, by the migration of varroa into hives on foragers. Colonies with high levels of varroa and viruses often die over the winter. Feeding colonies pollen might keep virus levels low and improve survival because of the positive effects of pollen on immunity and colony growth. We compared varroa and virus levels and overwinter survival in colonies with (fed) and without (unfed) supplemental pollen. Liraglutide supplier We also measured the frequency of capturing foragers with mites (FWM) at colony entrances to determine its relationship to varroa and virus levels. Colonies fed supplemental pollen were larger than unfed colonies and survived longer. Varroa populations and levels of Deformed wing virus (DWV) rose throughout the season, and were similar between fed and unfed colonies. The growth of varroa populations was correlated with FWM in fed and unfed colonies, and significantly affected DWV levels. Increasing frequencies of FWM and the effects on varroa populations might reduce the positive influence of supplemental pollen on immune function. However, pollen feeding can stimulate colony growth and this can improve colony survival.Hedeoma piperita Benth. is a perennial herb from the Lamiaceae family, which is highly valued for its medicinal and culinary properties by the Purépecha ethnic group in Michoacán, Mexico. The species presents populations of two morphotypes (white and purple corollas) that have not been formally studied. In this work, we aimed to evaluate the morphological and genetic variation between the two morphotypes. We sampled individuals from 15 populations within the Purépecha Plateau in western Mexico to measure 33 quantitative and qualitative morphological variable characters (vegetative and reproductive) and to estimate genetic diversity and structure using six nuclear microsatellite markers. Principal Component Analysis showed a clear separation between populations of the two morphotypes, which differences were statistically significant for all vegetative (n = 11) and reproductive (n = 22) characters. Similarly, Bayesian and multivariate cluster analyses based on the microsatellite data supported the distinction of the two morphotypes, except for one population of the white corolla that was genetically closer to the purple corolla group. Genetic diversity was moderate to low across populations of the two morphotypes, and inbreeding (FIS) was significantly higher in populations of the purple corolla. Our morphological and genetic data support the presence of two divergent morphotypes in H. piperita. This species is of high importance within the Purépecha culture, but unfortunately is declining in the region due to its high extraction rates. Thus, our results are valuable to delineate germplasm zones for future breeding programs and for informing in situ conservation strategies.
Cerebrovascular diseases are a leading cause of mortality after liver transplantation (LT). The prevalence of potentially hemorrhagic cerebrovascular diseases (HCVDs) that could cause a hemorrhagic stroke in patients with severe liver diseases has not been reported. We aimed to analyze the underlying prevalence of HCVDs that could lead to hemorrhagic strokes in LT recipients compared with that in previously healthy controls.

A retrospective study with 1,920 consecutive LT recipients and 24,681 adults who underwent a health checkup during the same period was conducted (January 2011-December 2016). The prevalence of cerebral aneurysms (CA), cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM), and cavernous malformation (CM) was evaluated using brain imaging, including computed tomography angiography, magnetic resonance imaging, magnetic resonance angiography, and digital subtraction angiography.

The prevalence of CA and CM were 3.1% and 0.5%, respectively, in the LT group and 3.8% and 0.4%, respectively, in the control group. According to the location of the cerebral artery, paraclinoid internal carotid artery aneurysms (odds ratio [OR] 0.440; P = 0.009) had a lower prevalence in LT recipients than in healthy controls. Anterior communicating artery (OR 3.080; P = 0.002) and superior cerebellar artery (OR 8.767; P = 0.017) aneurysms had a higher prevalence in the LT group than in the control. The prevalence of AVM was significantly higher in LT recipients (0.26%) than in healthy controls (0.06%).

LT recipients showed a different distribution of CA prevalence according to the locations of the cerebral artery and had a higher overall prevalence of AVM than previously healthy controls.

The aims of this study are to evaluate the efficacy and safety of first-line treatment with chemotherapy plus cetuximab in real-world patients with recurrent or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (RM-SCCHN) and to identify prognostic factors for overall survival (OS).

This is a prospective observation study involving 20 oncology institutions in Japan. Patients with RM-SCCHN treated with a first-line therapy consisting of cetuximab plus any chemotherapy regimen between December 2013 and February 2017 were enrolled. The primary objective of the study was 1-year OS. Secondary objectives included response rate and adverse events.

Of 120 patients recruited, 114 patients were analyzed. Median age was 64years. Cetuximab in combination with platinum plus 5-FU (EXTREME regimen) was chosen in 86 patients (75.4%). The median OS was 12.4months. A point estimate of the 1-year survival rate was 51.1%. Overall response rate was 26.3%. Grade 3 or worse adverse events included neutropenia (22.8%), hypokalemia (9.6%), acneiform rash (7.0%), pneumonitis (1.8%), and infusion-related reaction (0.9%). On multivariate analysis, regional lymph node metastasis, absence of intervention by dermatologists, lack of response to therapy, skin metastasis, and non-EXTREME regimen were identified as independent unfavorable prognostic factors for OS.

The combination of cetuximab plus chemotherapy was tolerable and efficacious in patients with RM-SCCHN in a real-world setting. Clinical outcomes and prognostic factors extracted from this study provide a reference of the current clinical practice as well as for the future development of novel therapy in RM-SCCHN.
