CONCLUSION The important finding of this study is that the thesis of a slope increase in MOW osteotomies found in the literature could not be approved regarding our results as no statistically significant change of PTS in MOW HTOs was observed. The findings support the common thesis that LCW osteotomies cause a slope reduction.In rod-shaped Gram-negative bacteria, penicillin binding protein 1a (PBP1a) and 1b (PBP1b) form peptidoglycan-synthesizing complexes with the outer membrane lipoprotein LpoA and LpoB, respectively. Escherichia coli mutants lacking PBP1b/LpoB are sicker than those lacking PBP1a/LpoA. However, we previously found that mutants lacking PBP1a/LpoA but not PBP1b/LpoB are deleterious in Shewanella oneidensis. Here, we show that S. oneidensis PBP1a (SoPBP1a) contains conserved signature motifs with its E. coli counterpart, EcPBP1a. Although EcPBP1a play a less prominent role in E. coli, it is capable of substituting for the SoPBP1a in a manner dependent on SoLpoA. In S. oneidensis, expression of PBP1b is lower than PBP1a, and therefore the additional expression of SoPBP1b at low levels can functionally compensate for the absence of SoPBP1a. Importantly, S. oneidensis PBP1a variants lacking either glycosyltransferase (GTase) or transpeptidase (TPase) activity fail to maintain normal morphology and cell envelope integrity. Similarly, SoPBP1b variants also fail to compensate for the loss of SoPBP1a. Furthermore, overproduction of variants of SoPBP1a, but not SoPBP1b, has detrimental effects on cell morphology in S. oneidensis wild type cells. Overall, our results indicate that the combined enzymatic activities of SoPBP1a are essential for cell wall homeostasis. © FEMS 2020.BACKGROUND a large number of studies have explored factors related to self- and informant ratings of quality of life in people with dementia, but many studies have had relatively small sample sizes and mainly focused on health conditions and dementia symptoms. The aim of this study is to compare self- and informant-rated quality of life, life satisfaction and well-being, and investigate the relationships of the two different rating methods with various social, psychological and health factors, using a large cohort study of community-dwelling people with dementia and carers in Great Britain. METHODS this study included 1,283 dyads of people with mild-to-moderate dementia and their primary carers in the Improving the experience of Dementia and Enhancing Active Life study. Multivariate modelling was used to investigate associations of self- and informant-rated quality of life, life satisfaction and well-being with factors in five domains psychological characteristics and health; social location; capitals, assets and resources; physical fitness and health; and managing everyday life with dementia. RESULTS people with dementia rated their quality of life, life satisfaction and well-being more highly than did the informants. Despite these differences, the two approaches had similar relationships with social, psychological and physical health factors in the five domains. CONCLUSION although self- and informant ratings differ, they display similar results when focusing on factors associated with quality of life, life satisfaction and well-being. Either self- or informant ratings may offer a reasonable source of information about people with dementia in terms of understanding associated factors. © The Author(s) 2020. For permissions, please email [email protected] studies suggest that gyrification is associated with superior cognitive abilities in humans, but the strength of this relationship remains unclear. Here, in two samples of related individuals (total N = 2882), we calculated an index of local gyrification (LGI) at thousands of cortical surface points using structural brain images and an index of general cognitive ability (g) using performance on cognitive tests. Selleckchem Oxaliplatin Replicating previous studies, we found that phenotypic and genetic LGI-g correlations were positive and statistically significant in many cortical regions. However, all LGI-g correlations in both samples were extremely weak, regardless of whether they were significant or nonsignificant. For example, the median phenotypic LGI-g correlation was 0.05 in one sample and 0.10 in the other. These correlations were even weaker after adjusting for confounding neuroanatomical variables (intracranial volume and local cortical surface area). Furthermore, when all LGIs were considered together, at least 89% of the phenotypic variance of g remained unaccounted for. We conclude that the association between LGI and g is too weak to have profound implications for our understanding of the neurobiology of intelligence. This study highlights potential issues when focusing heavily on statistical significance rather than effect sizes in large-scale observational neuroimaging studies. © The Author(s) 2020. For permissions, please e-mail [email protected] to estimate temporal trends in handgrip strength (HGS) for older Japanese adults between 1998 and 2017. DESIGN AND METHODS adults aged 60-79 years were included. Annual nationally representative HGS data (n = 176,449) for the 19-year study period were obtained from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Temporal trends in mean HGS were estimated by sample-weighted regression models relating the year of testing to mean HGS. National trends in absolute, percent and standardised HGS were estimated by a post-stratified population-weighting procedure. Temporal trends in variability were estimated as the ratio of coefficients of variation (CVs). RESULTS collectively, there was a small improvement in mean HGS of 1.4 kg (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.3-1.5), 4.5% (95%CI 4.3-4.7) or 0.27 standard deviations (95%CI 0.26-0.28) between 1998 and 2017. The rate of improvement progressively increased over time, with more recent values (post-2008) 1.5-fold larger than earlier values.
