For physiological measures, transfer effects in the first test could only be imputed on the basis of group-based inferential statistical analysis. Evidence for between-subject replication was weaker, with only a limited proportion of participants meeting the individual criterion for transfer.
This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the microbial profile and to quantify the levels of endotoxins (LPS) and lipoteichoic acid (LTA) present in periapical lesions associated with root filled teeth and those that had received root canal retreatment. It also aimed to investigate the association between microorganisms and their virulence factors with clinical and radiographic features.

Patients with periapical lesions in teeth with post-treatment endodontic disease following primary root canal treatment (n=19) and unsuccessful root canal retreatment (n=13) were treatment planned for endodontic microsurgery, where the periapical lesions were collected. Clinical and radiographic data were also collected. For microbiological analysis, nested polymerase chain reaction was used to detect 17 bacterial species. Levels of LPS and LTA were determined using limulus amebocyte lysate and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, respectively. The Student t-test or Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney tests were applied to comparetreatment had similar polymicrobial composition. The levels of LPS and LTA in periapical lesions associated with teeth after primary root canal treatment and retreatment were similar, and both were associated with the same symptomatology.

Prevertebral fascia invasion is a feature of advanced hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPSCC) that predicts surgical futility. Magnetic resonance and computed topography imaging are used to identify prevertebral involvement, but reliable prediction remains a challenge. Our aims were to describe a new indication for esophagrams and assess its ability to detect prevertebral invasion preoperatively.

Retrospective Review.

A retrospective review of advanced HPSCC patients from 2001 to 2019. Thirty-one patients underwent curative treatment (21 surgically, 10 with chemoradiation) with a preoperative esophagram. Operative and pathology reports, and fluoroscopic images were collected from the medical record. Esophagrams were read independently by two blinded radiologists. Excursion of the laryngeal complex was quantified relative to the height of vertebral bodies; <0.5 bodies was considered positive for fixation. Surgery or comparative imaging modalities were the gold-standard comparisons.

Mean age at diagnosis was 63 years. Twenty-one patients underwent surgical treatment with laryngopharyngectomies. One patient had prevertebral invasion during surgical exploration. Ten patients underwent chemoradiation therapy, and three of these had prevertebral invasion. The average hyolaryngeal elevation was 1.05 vertebral bodies (standard deviation = 0.5). There was a strong correlation between radiologists (R = 0.80, P < .0001). Compared to the gold standard, esophagrams had sensitivity of 75%, specificity of 93%, positive predictive value of 60%, and a negative predictive value (NPV) of 96%.

This study highlights the utility of a common radiologic modality in assessing prevertebral fascia invasion in an advanced-stage HPSCC cohort undergoing surgical treatment. With a high NPV and specificity, the esophagram's potential to rule out prevertebral fascia invasion is a useful predictor of resectability.

The edible oil storage period is one of the important indicators for evaluating the intrinsic quality of edible oil. The present study aimed to develop a portable electronic nose device for the qualitative identification of the edible oil storage period. First, four metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors, comprising TGS2600, TGS2611, TGS2620 and MQ138, were selected to prepare a sensor array to assemble a portable electronic nose device. Second, the homemade portable electronic nose device was used to obtain the odor change information of edible oil samples during different storage periods, and the sensor features were extracted. Finally, three pattern recognition methods, comprising linear discriminant analysis (LDA), K-nearest neighbors (KNN) and support vector machines (SVM), were compared to establish a qualitative identification model of the edible oil storage period. The input features and related parameters of the model were optimized by a five-fold cross-validation during the process of model establi of the edible oil storage. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.Sagittaria trifolia is an aquatic plant that is distributed worldwide. The edible tuber part of S. trifolia is a very common and popular vegetable in China. The aim of the present review is to discuss the discovery of nutraceuticals from S. trifolia tuber by reviewing its major constituents, food processing, food products, and health-promoting benefits. Sagittaria trifolia tuber comprises a series of nutritional and bioactive constituents, including dietary fibers, amino acids, minerals, starches, non-starch polysaccharides, diterpenoids, colchicine, phenols, and organic acids. Food processing affects its flavor, biocomponents, and bioactivity. Numerous S. trifolia tuber-based food products and nutraceuticals have been developed, but new categories of products and the anticipated functions still need to be explored. The non-starch polysaccharides could be the central ingredients that contribute to the plant's antioxidant, hepatoprotective, hypoglycemic, lipid-regulating, and immunostimulatory properties. Of these, antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects have been thoroughly investigated. Procedures for the extraction and purification of polysaccharides influence their health-promoting actions. Overall, S. trifolia tuber is an underutilized aquatic vegetable species that is an emerging subject for nutraceutical research. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of aqueous extract of Paullinia cupana (AEG) against ketoprofen side effects, through biochemical, hematological, and histological parameters. AEG showed antioxidant activity in the DPPH• scavenging (IC50 = 17.00 ± 1.00 µg/ml) and HPLC analysis revealed that this extract is constituted by antioxidants (caffeine, catechins, theobromine, and polyphenols). In vivo experiments in female Wistar rats demonstrated that alterations in urea, creatinine, and uric acid levels promoted (p less then .05) by ketoprofen were reversed when AEG was co-administered. Ketoprofen significantly decreased the catalase levels of animal tissues (p less then .05), which were restored when AEG was co-administered with the mentioned drug. Histological analysis showed that AEG protected tissues from damages caused by ketoprofen. Moreover, AEG reestablished the number of white blood cells, which had decreased when ketoprofen was administered. In conclusion, this study suggested that the association between ketoprofen and AEG may be an alternative to reduce health damages caused by this drug. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Paullinia cupana, popularly known as guaraná, is commonly consumed as a beverage in Brazil and exhibits pharmacological and beneficial effects to humans. Ketoprofen is an efficacious drug employed in the treatment of inflammatory processes. ICEC0942 However, this drug can cause several side effects in humans. Thus, the usage of natural products and plant extracts that can reduce such undesirable effects consists in a valuable strategy to be applied in therapeutic interventions.
Physician compensation for procedures is typically rooted in the work relative value unit (wRVU) system. Operative time is one of the factors that goes into the determination of wRVU assignment. There should be consistency between the wRVU/hr rate, irrespective of average operative time required to perform certain procedures. We investigate if wRVU assignment for otolaryngology procedures adequately accounts for increased operative time.

Retrospective analysis of a surgical database.

NSQIP was queried from 2015-2018 for the top 50 most frequently performed otolaryngology Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes completed as standalone procedures. Median operative time was determined for each CPT code, and wRVU/hr was calculated. Correlations between operative time, wRVU, and wRVU/hr were investigated using linear regression analysis. link2 A secondary analysis using complication rate as an indicator for procedure complexity was performed to examine the relation between wRVUs and complication rates.

Fifty CPT codes containing 64,084 patients where only one code was reported were included in this analysis. The median operative time was 84 minutes, median wRVU was 11.23, and median wRVU/hour was 7.96. Linear regression analysis demonstrated a strong positive correlation between operative time and wRVU assignment (R
= 0.805, P < .001). Further analysis found no correlation between operative time and wRVU/hr (R
= 0.008, P = .525). Linear regression of wRVU/hr and complication rate showed a statistically significant positive correlation (R
= 0.113, P = .017).

This analysis suggests that compensation for otolaryngology procedures is positively correlated with operative time. Surgeries where more than one code is reported could not be evaluated, thus excluding some common combination of procedures performed by otolaryngologists.

Singers have high vocal demands and are at increased risk of developing voice disorders. link3 Different singing genres place different technical demands on the voice. However, differences in laryngeal pathology based on genre have not been well-researched. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of laryngeal pathology in different genres of professional and amateur singers who present with a voice complaint.

Retrospective review.

Retrospective review of patients seen at a tertiary laryngology practice. Self-identified singers who reported their primary singing genre and categorized their singing as a full-time job, part-time job, or amateur involvement were included. Type and prevalence of pathology were calculated based on genre and professional status.

Of the 302 self-identified singers, 54% (n = 164) had laryngeal pathology. Among those with pathology, the most common finding was fibrotic lesion (38.4%, 63/164). Genres in which a majority of singers had pathology were other (69.2%, 9/13), choral (64.
