Panscorpiones (new name) is proposed for the clade uniting Scorpiones and Pseudoscorpiones.
Distal sensory polyneuropathy (DSP) is a disabling consequence of HIV, leading to poor quality of life and more frequent falls in older age. Neuropathic pain and paresthesia are prevalent symptoms, however there are currently no known curative treatments and the longitudinal course of pain in HIV-associated DSP is poorly characterized.

This was a prospective longitudinal study of 265 PWH enrolled in the CNS HIV Antiretroviral Therapy Effects Research (CHARTER) study with baseline and 12-year follow-up evaluations. Since pain and paresthesia are highly correlated, statistical decomposition was used to separate the two symptoms at baseline. Multivariable logistic regression analyses of decomposed variables were used to determine the effects of neuropathy symptoms at baseline on presence and worsening of distal neuropathic pain at 12-year follow-up, adjusted for covariates.

Mean age was 56 ± 8 years, and 21% were female at follow-up. Nearly the entire cohort (96%) was on antiretroviral therapy (ART) and 82% had suppressed (≤50 copies/mL) plasma viral loads at follow-up. Of those with pain at follow-up (n = 100), 23% had paresthesia at the initial visit. Decomposed paresthesia at baseline increased the risk of pain at follow-up (OR 1.56; 95% CI 1.18, 2.07), and decomposed pain at baseline predicted a higher frequency of pain at follow-up (OR 1.96 [1.51, 2.58]).

Paresthesias are a clinically significant predictor of incident pain at follow-up among aging PWH with DSP. Development of new therapies to encourage neuroregeneration might take advantage of this finding to choose individuals likely to benefit from treatment preventing incident pain.

To examine the outpatient opioid prescribing practices and the factors associated with opioid prescriptions in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).

This cross-sectional study used the 2011-2016 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey. Descriptive weighted analyses were used to examine the trends in opioid prescribing practices for RA. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the factors associated with opioid prescriptions among RA visits.

According to the national surveys, an average of 4.45 (95% Confidence Interval [CI], 2.30-6.60) million office visits were made annually for RA. In this work, we introduce the first computational framework to help answer the following fundamental question How often does more than one gene get horizontally transferred in a single HGT event? Our method, called HoMer, uses phylogenetic reconciliation to infer single-gene HGT events across a given set of species/strains, employs several techniques to account for inference error and uncertainty, combines that information with gene order information from extant genomes, and uses statistical analysis to identify candidate horizontal multigene transfers (HMGTs) in both extant and ancestral species/strains. HoMer is highly scalable and can be easily used to infer HMGTs across hundreds of genomes. We apply HoMer to a genome-scale data set of over 22,000 gene families from 103 Aeromonas genomes and identify a large number of plausible HMGTs of various scales at both small and large phylogenetic distances. Analysis of these HMGTs reveals interesting relationships between gene function, phylogenetic distance, and frequency of multigene transfer. Among other insights, we find that 1) the observed relative frequency of HMGT increases as divergence between genomes increases, 2) HMGTs often have conserved gene functions, and 3) rare genes are frequently acquired through HMGT. We also analyze in detail HMGTs involving the zonula occludens toxin and type III secretion systems. By enabling the systematic inference of HMGTs on a large scale, HoMer will facilitate a more accurate and more complete understanding of HGT and microbial evolution.The fundamental receptive field (RF) architecture in human visual cortex becomes adult-like by age 5. However, visuo-spatial functions continue to develop until teenage years. This suggests that, despite the early maturation of the RF structure, functional interactions within and across RFs may mature slowly. Here, we used fMRI to investigate functional interactions among multiple stimuli in the visual cortex of school children (ages 8 to 12) in the context of biased competition theory. In the adult visual system, multiple objects presented in the same visual field compete for neural representation. These competitive interactions occur at the level of the RF and are therefore closely linked to the RF architecture. Like in adults, we found suppression of evoked responses in children's visual cortex when multiple stimuli were presented simultaneously. Such suppression effects were modulated by the spatial distance between the stimuli as a function of RF size across the visual system. Our findings suggest that basic competitive interactions in the visual cortex of children above age 8 operate in an adult-like manner, with subtle differences in early visual areas and area MT. The present study aimed to evaluate the correlation between serum hepcidin and ferritin levels in thalassemia patients. This cross-sectional study investigated 64 patients with thalassemia; 16 β-thalassemia major (BTM), 31 β-thalassemia/hemoglobin (Hb) E (BE), and 17 Hb H + AE Bart's disease (Hb H + AE Bart's). The levels of serum hepcidin and ferritin, and Hb of the three groups were measured. The median values of serum ferritin and Hb were significantly different among the three groups, whereas serum hepcidin values were not observed to be significantly different. The correlation of the serum hepcidin and ferritin levels was not statistically significant in any of the three groups of thalassemia patients with BTM, BE, or Hb H + AE Bart's (r = -0.141, 0.065 and -0.016, respectively). In conclusion, no statistically significant correlations were observed between serum hepcidin with any variables including serum ferritin, Hb, age, labile plasma iron (LPI), and number of blood transfusion units among the three groups of thalassemia patients. Likely, the regulation of hepcidin in thalassemia patients is affected more by erythropoietic activity than iron storage.This study aimed to determine if, relative to cognitively healthy controls, sleep-dependent memory consolidation (SDMC) is diminished in mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a group at high risk of conversion to dementia. We also sought to determine whether SDMC is associated with sleep characteristics, daytime episodic memory, and hippocampal integrity. Participants with MCI (n = 43) and controls (n = 20) underwent clinical and neuropsychological profiling. From polysomnography, apnea hypopnea index (AHI) and non-REM sleep spindle characteristics were derived. From magnetic resonance imaging, hippocampal subfield volumes were computed. Participants learned a novel 32-item word-pair prior to sleep; morning retention of the word-pairs was used to determine SDMC. Results showed that SDMC did not differ between MCI and controls, but there was a large effect size decrement in SDMC in those with multiple domain MCI (Hedge's g = 0.85). In MCI, poorer SDMC was correlated with CA1 and CA3 hippocampal atrophy, shorter spindle duration, and worse daytime episodic memory. In controls, poorer SDMC was associated with higher AHI. Impaired daytime memory consolidation, reduced hippocampal volumes, shorter sleep spindles, and greater sleep apnea severity are indicators of diminished SDMC in older adults and should be explored in future studies.

This aim of this study was to review the current literature regarding facial hair transplantation and provide recommendations and best practices for transgender patients.

A comprehensive literature search of the PubMed, MEDLINE, and Embase databases was conducted for studies published through April 2020 for publications discussing facial hair transplant in transmasculine patients, in addition to the nontransgender population. Data extracted include patient demographics, techniques, outcomes, complications, and patient satisfaction.

We identified 2 articles discussing facial hair transplantation in transmasculine patients. Due to the paucity of publications describing facial hair transplantation in transmasculine patients, data regarding facial hair transplant from the cisgender population were utilized to augment our review and recommendations.

Facial hair transplant is a safe and effective means of promoting a masculine appearance for transgender patients.
