Water permeability of textile vascular grafts has been considered as a key indicator for predicting blood permeability after implantation. However, a correlation between water and blood permeability has not been established yet. To solve this problem, four types of woven vascular grafts were designed and manufactured in the present work. Moreover, the correlations among the water permeability, the simulated plasma permeability, and the anticoagulated whole blood permeability were established. The results suggest that relatively steady correlations exist between the water permeability and the anticoagulated whole blood permeability, and that the evaluation of the blood permeability using the water permeability is feasible and objective. The present work provides a quantitative method for evaluating the blood permeability using the water permeability, and the latter is thus endowed with practical significance for guiding designs and clinical pre-clotting operations of textiles vascular grafts.Madura foot is a chronic, progressively destructive bacterial or fungal infection of the subcutaneous tissues, which may affect skin, muscle, and bone. It is endemic in tropical and subtropical areas known as the "Mycetoma belt" between latitude 30°N and 15°S. Mycetoma is prevalent in the poor population living in remote areas of developing countries that lack proper reporting system and management. The World Health Organization recognized mycetoma as a neglected tropical disease back in 2016. Though the diagnosis is challenging, early detection and proper treatment can reduce morbidity and provide a promising outcome. We report a case of chronic painless, multiple papulo-nodular skin lesions at the foot that resembles mycetoma infection which was detected early and recovered with a satisfactory outcome with proper treatment.
Monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) or neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are useful for diagnosing periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), but their diagnostic values are unclear for screening fixation-related infection (FRI) in patients for whom conversion total hip arthroplasty (THA) is planned after failed internal fixation for femoral neck fracture.

We retrospectively included 340 patients who underwent conversion THA after internal fixation for femoral neck fracture from January 2008 to September 2020. Those patients constituted two groups noninfected patients and patients diagnosed with FRI according to the 2013 International Consensus Meeting Criteria. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to determine maximum sensitivity and specificity of these two preoperative ratios. The diagnostic performance of the two ratios combined with preoperative CRP or ESR was also evaluated.

The numbers of patients with and without FRI were 19 (5.6%) and 321 (94.4%), respectively. Areas under the ROC curve for diagnosing FRI were 0.763 for MLR, 0.686 for NLR, 0.905 for CRP, and 0.769 for ESR. Based on the Youden index, the optimal predictive cutoffs were 0.25 for MLR and 2.38 for NLR. Sensitivity and specificity were 78.9% and 71.0% for MLR, and 78.9% and 56.4% for NLR, respectively. The combination of CRP with MLR showed a sensitivity of 84.2% and specificity of 94.6%, while the corresponding values for the combination of CRP with NLR were 89.5% and 91.5%, respectively.

The enzymatic activity of constitutively expressed HO-2 must be strictly controlled in terms of the toxicity and chemical stability of CO. In this study, the molecular interaction between HO-2 and caveolin-1 and its effect on HO action were evaluated. An enzyme kinetics assay with residues 82-101 of caveolin-1, also called the caveolin scaffold domain, inhibited HO-2 activity in a competitive manner. Analytical ultracentrifugation and a hemin titration assay suggested that the inhibitory effect was generated by direct binding of caveolin-1 to aromatic residues, which were defined as components of the caveolin-binding motif in the HO-2 heme pocket. Herein, we developed a HO-2-based fluorescence bioprobe, namely EGFP-Δ19/D159H, which was capable of quantifying heme binding by HO-2 as the initial step in the CO production. The fluorescence of EGFP-Δ19/D159H decreased in accordance with 5-aminolevulinic acid-facilitated heme biosynthesis in COS-7 cells. In contrast, expression of the N-terminal cytosolic domain of caveolin-1 (residues 1-101) increased the probe fluorescence, suggesting that the cytosolic domain of caveolin-1 potently inhibits the binding of heme to the heme pocket of EGFP-Δ19/D159H. Taken together, our results suggest that caveolin-1 is a negative regulator of HO-2 enzymatic action. Moreover, our bioprobe EGFP-Δ19/D159H represents a powerful tool for use in future studies addressing HO-2-mediated CO production.This study focuses on dendritic glycerols and investigates the construction of biocompatible surfaces by understanding how differences in the branching of these molecules change the interactions with the biological components. The two molecules, polyglycerol dendrimer (PGD), which has a completely branched structure, and hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG), which has an incompletely branched structure, are compared and the differences in branching are evaluated. It is shown that PGD has a little bit more intermediate water than HPG, which reflects the differences in the branching. The effect of surface state on the adsorption of the plasma proteins, human serum albumin (HSA), fibrinogen (Fib), and fibronectin (FN), is discussed by modifying a glass surface using these molecules with different hydration states. The adsorption of HSA decreases to several percent for HPG and 10% for PGD compared to unmodified substrate. Although the adsorption of Fib decreases to 5% for HPG, an increase to 150% is observed for PGD. Since this specific Fib adsorption observed only onto PGD is suppressed in the cases of a mixed solution of HSA and Fib or sequentially using HSA solution and then Fib solution, it is thought that the Vroman effect is suppressed on the PGD-modified surface. Furthermore, when AFM measurements are performed in PBS to understand the surface roughness, PGD is found to be more highly non-uniform. Because of this, the nanometer scale roughness that is significantly observed only on the PGD-modified surface is thought to have an effect on the characteristic adsorption properties of Fib. Thus, although both PGD and HPG with different branching have intermediate water, the proportion differs between PGD and HPG. Therefore, it is found that differences occur in the plasma protein adsorption mechanisms depending on the coordinates and density of hydroxyl groups within the molecules.TiO2/Cu2O/CuO multi-nanolayers highly sensitive toward volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and H2 have been grown in various thicknesses by a cost-effective and reproducible combined spray-sputtering-annealing approach. The ultrathin TiO2 films were deposited by spray pyrolysis on top of sputtered-annealed Cu2O/CuO nanolayers to enhance their gas sensing performance and improve their protection against corrosion at high operating temperatures. The prepared heterostructures were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The gas sensing properties were measured at several operating temperatures, where the nanolayered sensors with oxide thicknesses between 20 and 30 nm (Cu2O/CuO nanolayers) exhibited a high response and an excellent selectivity to ethanol vapor after thermal annealing the samples at 420 °C. The results obtained at an operating temperature of 350 °C demonstrate that the CuO/Cu2O nanolayers with thic and TiO2(111)/CuO(1̅11)/Cu2O(111) devices that are fundamental in driving the change in the sensitivity response observed experimentally. The experimental data, supported by the computational results, are important in understanding the use of the multi-nanolayered films tested in this work as reliable, accurate, and selective sensor structures for the tracking of gases at low concentrations.Making heterojunctions between semiamorphous carbon nitride (CN) and other well-matched semiconductors (or even insulators) can solve many photocatalytic problems such as the recombination of charge carriers. However, many researchers encounter intrinsic problems including the lack of detailed information on contact boundaries in their heterojunctions, particularly in the amorphous/amorphous interface. In addition, the roles of contact boundaries in the photocatalytic mechanisms of many heterojunctions are still obscure. This study synthesized a novel CN/SiO2/WO3 photocatalyst having two different contact features by constructing an amorphous/amorphous (CN/SiO2) interface and a crystalline/amorphous (WO3/CN) interface to provide deep insights into heterojunction interfaces. SiO2 plays an exceptional role as a major component in the separation and migration of charge carriers. It not only modifies the texture but also transfers electrons. Surprisingly, the amorphous/amorphous interface shows an unpredicted capability for decreasing the recombination of electron-hole pairs.
