The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad and was doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China. Origins

With a name as evocative as Asia you'd expect the group to be prog queens and kings - but it's actually a pretty straight forward rock group. The band started out as a quartet, and they released two albums - 1979's self-titled debut, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a diverse musical background, but their greatest success was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster, but not without its share of problems. Record companies put the band on position with the order "give us an album that's a smash or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on to meet the deadline. Toto was able to do this through the aid of the hit song "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is the result of their previous experiences. Before forming the group, the band members worked as session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic signature has become the norm for pop music from the 1980s, and has influenced many modern artists.

The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write amazing AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into your. But the album also contains some more mellow, jazzy tracks, like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song which combines folk and distorted AOR and should sound totally wrong, but is incredibly effective.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band was through various drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in wake of drug charges and the group continued to perform as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. The group managed to release an album that topped the charts, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first album to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet format of the previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. Its edgier sound reflected the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's greater proficiency on the drums, as well as a more confident, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard skills were as well more refined, more precise and less akin to previous recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded their Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. A new studio album was released just a few months later and the band embarked on an extensive world tour to promote the album. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which restricted his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the band. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was occupied with Yes at the time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
