After adding 0.1 M PS to the Fenton system at 1.0 h, the removal rate of BDE-209 was significantly increased from 62.2% to 94.0%. The degradation of BDE-209 in various soil samples was also investigated by the coupling Fenton-PS method. Removal efficiency of 73.4-95.8% was obtained, suggesting that this coupling method was feasible in real application. According to the radical scavenging experiments, •OH dominated the overall reaction of BDE-209 in the coupling system. Meanwhile, the enhanced removal was attributed to the generation of SO4•- from the catalytic decomposition of PS. The calculated energy barriers for SO4•- attacking on the carbons were smaller than •OH initiated reactions, which further confirmed that SO4•- plays a role in the accelerated removal of BDE-209. The initial attack of BDE-209 by SO4•- generated the SO4•- adducts, which may undergo debromination or CO bond cleavage reaction together with subsequent hydroxyl substitution to form the primary product OH-Nona-BDEs and pentabromophenol. Under the successive attack of radicals, these primary products were further transformed into lower-brominated hydroxylation products and bromophenols via direct debromination and hydroxyl substitution reaction. This work provides an economical and effective method for treating BDE-209 contaminated soils and samples.Observed multiple adverse effects of livestock production have led to increasing calls for more sustainable livestock production. Quantitative analysis of adverse effects, which can guide public debate and policy development in this area, is limited and generally scattered across environmental, human health, and other science domains. The aim of this study was to bring together and, where possible, quantify and aggregate the effects of national-scale livestock production on 17 impact categories, ranging from impacts of particulate matter, emerging infectious diseases and odor annoyance to airborne nitrogen deposition on terrestrial nature areas and greenhouse gas emissions. Effects were estimated and scaled to total Dutch livestock production, with system boundaries including feed production, manure management and transport, but excluding slaughtering, retail and consumption. Effects were expressed using eight indicators that directly express Impact in the sense of the Drivers-Pressures-State-Impact-Response r regions, to allow informed decision making across a broad range of impact categories.Dust particles are transported globally. Dust storms can adversely impact both human health and the environment, but they also impact transportation infrastructure, agriculture, and industry, occasionally severely. The identification of the locations that are the primary sources of dust, especially in arid and semi-arid environments, remains a challenge as these sites are often in remote or data-scarce regions. In this study, a new method using state-of-the-art machine-learning algorithms - random forest (RF), support vector machines (SVM), and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) - was evaluated for its ability to spatially model the distribution of dust-source potential in eastern Iran. To accomplish this, empirically identified dust-source locations were determined with the ozone monitoring instrument aerosol index and the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Deep Blue aerosol optical thickness methods. The identified areas were divided into training (70%) and validation (30%) sets. Measurements of the conditioning factors (lithology, wind speed, maximum air temperature, land use, slope angle, soil, rainfall, and land cover) were compiled for the study area and predictive models were developed. The area-under-the-receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) and true-skill statistics (TSS) were used to validate the maps of the models' predictions. The results show that the RF algorithm performed best (AUC = 89.4% and TSS = 0.751), followed by the SVM (AUC = 87.5%, TSS = 0.73) and the MARS algorithm (AUC = 81%, TSS = 0.69). The results of the RF indicated that wind speed and land cover are the most important factors affecting dust generation. The region of highest dust-source potential that was identified by the RF is in the eastern parts of the study region. This model can be applied to other arid and semi-arid environments that experience dust storms to promote management that prevents desertification and reduces dust production.Legal restrictions and bans have led to a steady decrease in PCB environmental concentrations. Yet, in recent years PCBs have been found at very high levels in the Mediterranean Sea, for instance, in some apex predators. This work aimed to investigate current PCB (eighteen congeners #28,52,77,81,101,105,114,118,123,126,138,153,156,157,167,169,180,189) concentrations in the Mediterranean Sea and their relevance today, focusing on their occurrence in edible fish species typically consumed in the Mediterranean diet. In spring 2017, a total of 48 fish samples from the Northern Thyrrenian Sea were collected 16 specimens of sardine (Sardina pilchardus), 16 of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and 16 of bogue (Boops boops). PCBs were quantified in the muscle of the animals by means of GC-QqQ-MS. They were found in all samples at the greatest concentrations (ng/g w.w.) in sardine (4.15-17.9, range), and very similar values between anchovy (1.01-7.08) and bogue (1.46-7.22). WHO-TEQ PCB values followed the same order, i.e. sardine (0.410-1.24, range in pg/g w.w.) > anchovy (0.0778-0.396) ~ bogue (0.0726-0.268). These concentrations lied below the European limits of 75 ng/g (w.w.) for the six indicator PCBs and 6.5 pg/g WHO-TEQ for dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in muscle meat of fish. Additionally, estimated weekly intakes (EWI, in pg WHO-TEQ/Kg/week) for sardine (1.2), anchovy (0.29) and bogue (0.35) scored below the safe value proposed by EFSA of 2 pg WHO-TEQ/Kg/week. When comparing with data reported for the same species in previous Mediterranean studies, values found here were lower than those surveyed in the late 90s and early 2000s; however, they were often not notably different from concentrations reported in last years. This builds up on the concept of a current slow decrease of PCBs in the Mediterranean Sea, likely linked to new inputs and/or remobilization of burdens, and reinforces the need of continous monitoring of these legacy contaminants still ubiquitous today.A one-pot efficient biocatalytic strategy for the synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-ones was developed in a circulating microwave reactor selecting α-chymotrypsin as the promiscuous biocatalyst. In the circulating reaction system, the combination of microwave heating and external cooling could avoid the denaturation and inactivation of enzyme, and greatly improved the radiation power of microwave, thus improving the specific effects of microwave. During the reaction process, the microwave radiation power was automatically adjusted by adjusting the speed of the reaction mixture circulation. When the microwave power was maintained at 110 W, the best results could be obtained with the highest yield of 96% at 55 °C in 50 min, and the reaction had a wide range of substrates. But no obvious product was detected in a tank microwave reactor at 55 °C for 100 min, under this condition, the microwave power was maintained at about 3 W. As a contrast, the reaction only obtained 63% yield in 55 °C oil bath for 96 h.Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a heterogeneous disease which is characterized with excessive inflammation and autoantibodies, macrophage and complement activation, and subsequently immunologically mediated tissue damage. In spite of improved treatments of SLE, these patients experience premature atherosclerosis and the rate of mortality among them remains high. Autoantibodies and circulating immune complexes might contribute to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis by injuring the endothelium, as well as inducing pro-inflammatory and pro-adhesive endothelial cell phenotypes, as well as altering the metabolism of lipoproteins involved in atherogenesis. Hence, high levels of atherogenic lipoproteins (like low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL)) and low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) are important risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular complications in SLE patients but these traditional risk factors fail to fully explain the increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in these patients. The exact mechanism by which inflammation decreases HDL levels is not defined, but decreases in apoA-I production and lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) activity, as well as increased serum amyloid A (SAA), endothelial lipase and secretory phospholipase A2 activity (PLA2) could all contribute. In addition, during inflammation multiple changes in HDL structure occur, leading to alterations in HDL function which may be implicated in the CVD complications of SLE. Therefore, this review will aim to identify the mechanisms implicated in HDL dysfunction which occurs in SLE patients.Objective To estimate the economic burden of systematic lupus erythematous (SLE), stratified by disease severity, in commercially- and Medicaid-insured US populations. Methods Adults (≥18 years) with SLE treated with antimalarials, selected biologics, immunosuppressants, and systemic glucocorticoids (2010-2014) were identified within the commercial and Medicaid insurance IBM MarketScan® databases (index date = first SLE medication claim). Both cohorts were stratified into mild (receiving antimalarial or glucocorticoid monotherapy ≤5 mg/day) versus moderate/severe SLE (receiving glucocorticoids >5 mg/day, biologic, immunosuppressant, or combination therapy) during a 6-month exposure period. All-cause healthcare utilization and costs were evaluated during the 12 months following the exposure period. Results Among 8231 commercially-insured patients, 32.6% had mild and 67.4% had moderate/severe SLE by our definition. Among 802 Medicaid-insured patients, 25.2% had mild and 74.8% had moderate/severe SLE. Adjusted mean total healthcare costs, excluding pharmacy, for moderate/severe SLE patients were higher than for mild SLE patients in the commercially-insured ($39,021 versus $23,519; p less then 0.0001) and Medicaid-insured populations ($56,050 versus $44,932; p = 0.06). In both SLE severity populations total unadjusted costs were significantly higher among Medicaid-insured than commercially-insured patients. Conclusion Commercially-insured patients with treatment suggesting moderate/severe SLE incurred significantly higher adjusted mean healthcare costs, excluding pharmacy, compared with mild SLE patients. While not reaching statistical significance, moderate/severe Medicaid-insured patients had higher costs then mild SLE patients. Total unadjusted healthcare costs were significantly higher among Medicaid-insured than commercially-insured patients. These differential costs are important to consider and monitor when implementing interventions to improve health and reduce healthcare spending for SLE.
