We analyzed in a multi-center cohort of 1,161 consecutive KT, granular baseline donor and recipient factors predicting transplant outcomes, selected by bootstrapping and Cox proportional hazards, and were validated in a contemporaneous European KT cohort (n=1,585). 74.3% were DBD and 25.7% cDCD-KT. ECD-KT showed the poorest graft survival rates, irrespective of cDCD or DBD (Log-Rank less then 0.001). Besides standard ECD classification, dialysis vintage, older age and previous cardiovascular recipient events together with low class-II-HLA match, long cold ischemia time and combining a diabetic donor with a cDCD predicted graft loss (C-Index 0.715, 95%CI 0.675-0.755). External validation showed good prediction accuracy (C-Index 0.697, 95%CI 0.643-0.741). Recipient older age, male gender, dialysis vintage, previous cardiovascular events and receiving a cDCD independently predicted patient death. Benefit/risk assessment of undergoing KT was compared to concurrent waitlisted candidates, and despite the fact that undergoing KT outperformed remaining waitlisted, remarkably high mortality rates were predicted if KT was undertaken under the worst risk-prediction model. Strategies to increase the donor pool, including cDCD transplants with highly expanded donor and recipient candidates should be performed with caution.Secondary contact between species often results in the formation of a hybrid zone, with the eventual fates of the hybridizing species dependent on evolutionary and ecological forces. We examine this process in the Amazon Basin by conducting the first genomic and phenotypic characterization of the hybrid zone formed after secondary contact between two obligate army-ant-followers the White-breasted Antbird (Rhegmatorhina hoffmannsi) and the Harlequin Antbird (Rhegmatorhina berlepschi). We found a major geographic displacement (∼120 km) between the mitochondrial and nuclear clines, and we explore potential hypotheses for the displacement, including sampling error, genetic drift, and asymmetric cytonuclear incompatibilities. We cannot exclude roles for sampling error and genetic drift in contributing to the discordance; however, the data suggest expansion and unidirectional introgression of hoffmannsi into the distribution of berlepschi.Pleiotropic roles of IL-10. We estimated HIV- and age-stratified cervical cancer burden at a country, regional and global level in 2020. Proportions of cervical cancer (a) diagnosed in women living with HIV (WLHIV), and (b) attributable to HIV, were calculated using age-specific estimates of HIV prevalence (UNAIDS) and relative risk. These proportions were validated against empirical data and applied to age-specific cervical cancer incidence (GLOBOCAN 2020). HIV was most important in SSA, where 24.9% of cervical cancers were diagnosed in WLHIV, and 20.4% were attributable to HIV (vs 1.3% and 1.1%, respectively, in the rest of the world). In all world regions, contribution of HIV to cervical cancer was far higher in younger women (as seen also in empirical series). For example, in Southern Africa, where more than half of cervical cancers were diagnosed in WLHIV, the HIV-attributable fraction decreased from 86% in women ≤34 years to only 12% in women ≥55 years. Metabolomics is the study of small molecules that represent the functional endpoints of cellular reactions that can impact health. Necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) and late onset sepsis (LOS) are the main cause of death in preterm infants surviving the initial days of life.

This review will explore and summarise the current literature exploring metabolomics in preterm infants.

There are a relatively limited number of studies investigating metabolomics in preterm infants with NEC and/or LOS and matched controls. Nonetheless, it is evident across longitudinally age related metabolomic studies that there are significant changes in metabolite profiles postpartum and over the first year of life. Existing studies have reported associations between the metabolite profiles of serum, urine, and stool in health and disease in preterm infants. While some studies have found selected metabolites are associated with disease, the specific metabolites vary from study to study and larger studies are required. Excitingly, recent work has also begun to untangle how microbially produced metabolites can impact immunoregulation of the infant.

Metabolic exploration is an emerging research area with huge potential for developing novel biomarkers and better understanding disease processes in preterm infants.●Many plant species simultaneously interact with multiple symbionts, which can, but do not always, generate synergistic benefits for their host. We ask if plant life history (i.e. annual vs perennial) can play an important role in the outcomes of the tripartite symbiosis of legumes, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), and rhizobia. ●We performed a meta-analysis of 88 studies examining outcomes of legume-AMF-rhizobia interactions on plant and microbial growth. ●Perennial legumes associating with AMF and rhizobia grew larger than expected based on their response to either symbiont alone (i.e. their response to co-inoculation was synergistic). In contrast, annual legume growth with co-inoculation did not differ from additive expectations. AMF and rhizobia differentially increased P and N tissue concentration. Rhizobium nodulation increased with mycorrhizal fungi inoculation, but mycorrhizal fungi colonization did not increase with rhizobium inoculation. Microbial responses to co-infection were significantly correlated with synergisms in plant growth. ●Our work supports a balanced plant stoichiometry mechanism for synergistic benefits. We find that synergisms are in part driven by reinvestment in complementary symbionts, and that time-lags in realizing benefits of reinvestment may limit synergisms in annuals. Optimization of microbiome composition to maximize synergisms may be critical to productivity, particularly for perennial legumes.There has been an increased prevalence of several allergic manifestations such as food allergy, atopic eczema, allergic rhinitis, and asthma. Several explanations have been proposed why this has occurred, but one of the main contributing factors may be the gradual loss of microbial exposures over time in regions where allergy is prevalent. Such exposures occur in individuals who practice a traditional farming lifestyle and are protected against allergy. Infant consumption of human milk, more commonly practiced in these farming communities may provide an alternative in combatting allergy, as it known to be beneficial to infant health. In this review we cover human milk and its role in shaping the gut microbiome promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterium, as well as the downstream impact of the farming lifestyle, human milk and Bifidobacterium has on developing infant immunity.Global warming is occurring at an alarming rate, with climate change creating severe water-related hazards that are at the top of the natural disasters list. The highest human losses have been recorded in the past 50 years based on world meteorological organization calculations. Thus, everyone needs to play their part in environmental sustainability (ES). This will require a change in behavior; therefore, the current study considered pro-environmental behavior (PEB) crucial to ES among university employees. The moderating effect of green organizational culture (GOC) on the relationship between PEB and ES was also investigated. As it is typical of a Thai public university to expend a considerable amount of natural resources in the process of conducting its routine academic and operational activities, it is a setting worthy of investigation. The higher education sector is rarely explored in the areas of resource use and conservation; for this reason, this study was specifically targeted at the human factor in this specialized setting. A survey was performed on the faculty members of Thai public universities to verify the model. It was found that PEB influenced ES, and GOC moderated the relationship between PEB and ES. The results encompassed six dimensions of PEB and the moderating effect of GOC in the context of higher educational institutions. The findings have provided new insights into PEB intervention and modification in the context of higher education institutions whose management may use the results to strengthen employees' PEB by offering information, knowledge, and training.Structure, function, and evolution are interdependent properties of proteins. Diversity of protein functions arising from structural variations is a potential driving force behind protein evolvability. Intrinsically disordered proteins or regions (IDPs or IDRs) lack well-defined structure under normal physiological conditions, yet, they are highly functional. Increased occurrence of IDPs in eukaryotes compared to prokaryotes indicates strong correlation of protein evolution and disorderedness. IDPs generally have higher evolution rate compared to globular proteins. Structural pliability allows IDPs to accommodate multiple mutations without affecting their functional potential. Nevertheless, how evolutionary signals vary between different classes of disordered residues (DRs) in IDPs is poorly understood. This study addresses variation of evolutionary behavior in terms of residue conservation and intra-protein coevolution among structural and functional classes of DRs in IDPs. Analyses are performed on 579 human IDPs, which are classified based on length of IDRs, interacting partners and functional classes.
