Nowadays, location awareness becomes the key to numerous Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Among the various methods for indoor localisation, received signal strength indicator (RSSI)-based fingerprinting attracts massive attention. However, the RSSI fingerprinting method is susceptible to lower accuracies because of the disturbance triggered by various factors from the indoors that influence the link quality of radio signals. Localisation using body-mounted wearable devices introduces an additional source of error when calculating the RSSI, leading to the deterioration of localisation performance. The broad aim of this study is to mitigate the user's body shadowing effect on RSSI to improve localisation accuracy. see more Firstly, this study examines the effect of the user's body on RSSI. Then, an angle estimation method is proposed by leveraging the concept of landmark. For precise identification of landmarks, an inertial measurement unit (IMU)-aided decision tree-based motion mode classifier is implemented. After that, a compensation model is proposed to correct the RSSI. Finally, the unknown location is estimated using the nearest neighbour method. Results demonstrated that the proposed system can significantly improve the localisation accuracy, where a median localisation accuracy of 1.46 m is achieved after compensating the body effect, which is 2.68 m before the compensation using the classical K-nearest neighbour method. Moreover, the proposed system noticeably outperformed others when comparing its performance with two other related works. The median accuracy is further improved to 0.74 m by applying a proposed weighted K-nearest neighbour algorithm.Machine-vision-based defect detection, instead of manual visual inspection, is becoming increasingly popular. In practice, images of the upper surface of cableway load sealing steel wire ropes are seriously affected by complex environments, including factors such as lubricants, adhering dust, natural light, reflections from metal or oil stains, and lack of defect samples. This makes it difficult to directly use traditional threshold-segmentation-based or supervised machine-learning-based defect detection methods for wire rope strand segmentation and fracture defect detection. In this study, we proposed a segmentation-template-based rope strand segmentation method with high detection accuracy, insensitivity to light, and insensitivity to oil stain interference. The method used the structural characteristics of steel wire rope to create a steel wire rope segmentation template, the best coincidence position of the steel wire rope segmentation template on the real-time edge image was obtained through multiple translations, and the steel wire rope strands were segmented. Aiming at the problem of steel wire rope fracture defect detection, inspired by the idea of dynamic background modeling, a steel wire rope surface defect detection method based on a steel wire rope segmentation template and a timely spatial gray sample set was proposed. The spatiotemporal gray sample set of each pixel in the image was designed by using the gray similarity of the same position in the time domain and the gray similarity of pixel neighborhood in the space domain, the dynamic gray background of wire rope surface image was constructed to realize the detection of wire rope surface defects. The method proposed in this paper was tested on the image set of Z-type double-layer load sealing steel wire rope of mine ropeway, and compared with the classic dynamic background modeling methods such as VIBE, KNN, and MOG2. The results show that the purposed method is more accurate, more effective, and has strong adaptability to complex environments.Fault tolerance is one of the effective methods to improve the reliability of magnetic bearings, and the redundant magnetic bearing provides a feasible measure for fault-tolerant control. The linearization and accuracy of the electromagnetic force (EMF) from the redundant structures is crucial for designing fault-tolerant controllers. In the magnetic bearing with a redundant structure, the current distribution matrix W is an important factor that affects the accuracy of EMF. In this paper, we improved the accuracy of the EMF model and took the eight-pole symmetrical radial magnetic bearing as the research object. The corresponding displacement compensation matrices have been calculated for the different coils that fail in the magnetic bearing while the rotor is at the non-equilibrium position. Then, we propose a fault-tolerant control strategy that includes displacement compensation. The rigid body dynamics model of the rotor, supported by magnetic bearings with redundant structures, is established. Moreover, to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy, we combined the rigid body dynamics model of the rotor with a fault-tolerant control strategy, and the corresponding simulation has been carried out. In the case of disturbance force and some coils fail in magnetic bearing and compared with the fault-tolerant control that absents the displacement compensation factors. The simulations demonstrate the disturbance rejection of magnetically levitated rotor system can be enhanced. The robustness of the rotor has been improved with the fault-tolerant control strategy proposed in this paper.Screen-printed sensing electrodes attract much attention for water pollution monitoring due to their small size, physical and chemical durability, and low cost. This paper presents the fabrication and broad potentiometric characterization of RuO2 pH sensing electrodes deposited by screen printing on alumina substrates and sintered in the 800-900 °C temperature range. All the fabricated electrodes showed close to Nernstian sensitivity, good linearity, fast response, small drift, low hysteresis, and low cross-sensitivity toward various interfering cations and anions. Furthermore, decreasing the sintering temperature led to better adhesion of the RuO2 layer and a negligible response to interfering ions. The measurements in real-life samples from different water sources showed that the fabricated electrodes are on par with conventional glass electrodes with a maximum deviation of 0.11 pH units, thus indicating their potential for application in water quality monitoring.Mastery of fire is intimately linked to advances in human civilization, culture and technology [...].Visual simultaneous location and mapping (SLAM) using RGB-D cameras has been a necessary capability for intelligent mobile robots. However, when using point-cloud map representations as most RGB-D SLAM systems do, limitations in onboard compute resources, and especially communication bandwidth can significantly limit the quantity of data processed and shared. This article proposes techniques that help address these challenges by mapping point clouds to parametric models in order to reduce computation and bandwidth load on agents. This contribution is coupled with a convolutional neural network (CNN) that extracts semantic information. Semantics provide guidance in object modeling which can reduce the geometric complexity of the environment. Pairing a parametric model with a semantic label allows agents to share the knowledge of the world with much less complexity, opening a door for multi-agent systems to perform complex tasking, and human-robot cooperation. This article takes the first step towards a generalized parametric model by limiting the geometric primitives to a planar surface and providing semantic labels when appropriate. Two novel compression algorithms for depth data and a method to independently fit planes to RGB-D data are provided, so that plane data can be used for real-time odometry estimation and mapping. Additionally, we extend maps with semantic information predicted from sparse geometries (planes) by a CNN. In experiments, the advantages of our approach in terms of computational and bandwidth resources savings are demonstrated and compared with other state-of-the-art SLAM systems. This paper assesses the performance of a localization technique for underwater visible light networks. The proposed approach is based on a fingerprinting technique, collecting the channel impulse responses from different wireless optical signals in the visible range. A local database related to the power level distribution within a maritime environment is built and exploited to estimate user position, e.g., a diver moving in a given space for underwater fish monitoring. In this paper, we investigate on the noise effect on the localization accuracy in underwater scenarios and for different water turbidity coefficient and we demonstrate that the estimation error suffers on variable channel impulse responses. Different configuration parameters and environmental scenarios have been considered, showing that the LED transmitter deployment can be effective in the localization estimation. A comparison of the proposed localization approach to the traditional triangulation method has been finally carried out, showing the effectiveness of the fingerprinting-based solution for a lower number of LED transmitters.Autonomous vehicles (AVs) rely on various types of sensor technologies to perceive the environment and to make logical decisions based on the gathered information similar to humans. Under ideal operating conditions, the perception systems (sensors onboard AVs) provide enough information to enable autonomous transportation and mobility. In practice, there are still several challenges that can impede the AV sensors' operability and, in turn, degrade their performance under more realistic conditions that actually occur in the physical world. This paper specifically addresses the effects of different weather conditions (precipitation, fog, lightning, etc.) on the perception systems of AVs. In this work, the most common types of AV sensors and communication modules are included, namely RADAR, LiDAR, ultrasonic, camera, and global navigation satellite system (GNSS). A comprehensive overview of their physical fundamentals, electromagnetic spectrum, and principle of operation is used to quantify the effects of various weather conditions on the performance of the selected AV sensors. This quantification will lead to several advantages in the simulation world by creating more realistic scenarios and by properly fusing responses from AV sensors in any object identification model used in AVs in the physical world. Moreover, it will assist in selecting the appropriate fading or attenuation models to be used in any X-in-the-loop (XIL, e.g., hardware-in-the-loop, software-in-the-loop, etc.) type of experiments to test and validate the manner AVs perceive the surrounding environment under certain conditions.A novel wideband high-power single-pole two-throw (SP2T) switch based on gap waveguide technology is presented in this article. The proposed switch has a SP2T structure and consists of three standard WR62 waveguide ports. Due to the advantage of gap waveguide technology, the switch design structure requires no electrical contact between its different parts, and the leakage of the electromagnetic wave is suppressed. The proposed switch has an air gap between its parts. As a result, the sliding part of the switch can be moved freely to change the switch states. Consequently, a low-precision and low-cost fabrication can be utilized. The simulation and measurement of the proposed switch indicate that a 50% operating frequency bandwidth covering the range of 12-20 GHz can be achieved. The switch input return-loss is better than 15 dB within the frequency bandwidth, whereas the insertion loss and isolation levels of the proposed design are above 0.15 dB and better than 65 dB, respectively.
