- it got rid of opposition to Mao as they were all killed for speaking out against him, and labelled as 'rightists' causing the Hundred Flowers Campaign to become a cynical trap to get rid of all opposition to Mao
- The Shanghai Massacre took place b/c: Chiang Kaishek did not want to work with the Communists thus breaking off their alliance by getting rid of as many as possible in June 1927, he feared them and how much support/power they were gaining, especially with the working class and peasants, an example of which can be found in Shanghai where there were many large worker's unions. Chiang Kaishek felt that the time was right, seeign as the Northern Expedition had been completed, and that the Communists were beginning to gain large traction in Shanghai, which resulted in GMD troops killing any CCP members they could find in Shanghai, followed by those in other Chinese cities
- Mao Zedong was responsible for the Cultural Revolution, dictating its movements in order to make up for the failure of the Great Leap Forward and restore his power again, as suggested by his allying with then betraying the Red Guard, emphasis on nationalism and patriotism, and further removing any possible opposition to himself, aided by Lin Biao, mass rallies in Beijing, it is right to rebel, Jiang Qing and the Cultural Revolutionary Committee
- Democracy Movement: ignored by the government until gained enough power, then brutally cracked down, waves of freedom then punishment in the country, mainly affected university students and those in cities rather than peasants
- 2nd Sino-Japanese War: start of WWII, invasion of Manchuria in 1931, then July 1937 Marco Polo Bridge attack, helped the GMD lose power while the CCP gained it, Japanese people treated the Chinese brutally eg. Three All Campaign, Liberation areas + Soviets, USA involvement, strength of armies
