The products of the PCR reaction were then visualized in agarose gel, and a statistical analysis of the results was performed. No statistically significant differences were found in the frequency of glutathione S-transferase polymorphisms between 66 patients with prostate cancer and the control group (64 healthy volunteers). The GSTM1 gene deletion was found in ca. 47% of patients with prostate cancer and in ca. 55% of the controls. The GSTT1 deletion was found in approximately 17% of patients and 14% of the controls. The distribution of GSTP1 Ile/Ile, Ile/Val, and Val/Val polymorphisms was ca. 51.5%, 39%, and 9% in the group of patients and 61%, 34%, and 5% in the control group, respectively. The results indicate that there is no relationship between glutathione S-transferase polymorphisms and prostate cancer in the study group, which is a novelty when compared with the previous work on the role of these genetic variants in the etiology of cancer.In the present study, isolated strains of the microalgae Chlamydomonas sp. (CH) and Chlorella vulgaris (CV) were used to treat aquaculture wastewater and to obtain fatty acids and from a fattening culture of tilapia. The microalgae were cultivated for 11 days in tubular photobioreactors with an operating volume of 2 L, constant aeration and illumination. High removal rates of NO3- and PO43- were achieved for both Chlamydomonas sp. (84.7% and 96%, respectively) and Chlorella vulgaris (94.6 and 97.9%, respectively). The maximum biomass productivity achieved by Chlamydomonas sp. was 0.06 and 0.10 gL-1d-1 for Chlorella vulgaris. Therefore, tilapia wastewater contained the necessary nutrient concentration for algal growth and development. Chlamydomonas sp. biomass lipid content was 69%, while that of Chlorella vulgaris was 40%. The lipid profile of both microalgae was abundant in palmitic acid (78% for Chlamydomonas sp. and 35% for Chlorella vulgaris). This fatty acid is suitable for biodiesel production. Tilapia wastewater is low-cost alternative culture medium as it contains the necessary nutrient concentration for microalgae development and growth.This study investigated the prevalence of ten odorous compounds (2-methylisoborneol, trans-1,10-dimethyl-trans-9-decalol, isophorone, 2,4,6-trichloroanisole, 2,3,6-trichloroanisole, 2,3,4-trichloroanisole, β-cyclocitral, β-ionone, 2-isobutyl-3-methyoxypyrazine, and 2-isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine) in raw drinking water, as well as their removal by traditional processes, advanced oxidation processes, ultrafiltration, and nanofiltration processes, with the use of an ultrahigh-resolution Orbitrap. The most abundant odorous compounds referred to 2-methylisoborneol and trans-1,10-dimethyl-trans-9-decalol with maximal concentrations of 1.6 ng/L and 0.09 ng/L after treatment by traditional processes respectively, and their maximal concentration was 2.05 ng/L and lower than the detection limit after treatment by advanced oxidation processes, while the raw drinking water of the mentioned two processes was different. The high concentration of isophorone in water treated by traditional process, advanced oxidation process, and membrane process was also ascertained. On the whole, the removal rate of membrane process is the maximal for all odorous compounds except for 2,3,6-trichloroanisole, followed by the advanced oxidation process as well as the traditional process. Eight odorous compounds identified in raw water were preserved after traditional treatment, while five compounds were preserved after the advanced oxidation treatment. The combined ultrafiltration and nanofiltration with pre-flocculation was more effective than either the advanced oxidation process or the traditional treating process in removing odorous compounds, and over 90% of all the odorous compounds were removed. Further investigation is required to facilitate the removal of odorous compounds from drinking water by the incorporation of ultrafiltration and nanofiltration units based on current drinking water treatments.Many industries discharge wastewater from processing into surface and underground waterways, and then, these waste waters must therefore be treated in order to remove heavy metals. The most common treatment used is the activated carbon adsorption, a particularly competitive and effective process; however, the use of activated carbon is not suitable due to the high costs. Then, in order to minimize processing cost, recent investigations have been focused on the use of low-cost adsorbents as zeolites. In particular, clinoptilolite is known to have high selectivity for certain heavy metals. In this paper, the capability of clinoptilolite as a low-cost adsorbent for the removal of zinc and cadmium ions from wastewater was analyzed in a batch system. Preliminary characterization was performed on adsorbent material in order to evaluate the chemical-physical structure. Tests in batch for analyzing adsorbing capacity of clinoptilolite were carried out varying zinc and cadmium concentrations between 10 and 200 mg/L with different amounts of sorbent in the solution (10-60 g/L). For both zinc and cadmium ions, complete adsorption was reached when the concentration was equal to 10 mg/L and adsorption capacity decreased increasing metals amount. In particular, clinoptilolite permitted high Cd2+ abatement, probably due to its greater affinity with adsorbent in the single system. Binary system was then analyzed, and, contrary to previous tests, the adsorbent in the simultaneous presence of the two metals demonstrated a greater affinity toward zinc, showing a higher percentage of absorption, due to a different absorption mechanism in the presence of two ions.Surface water is one of the important landscape resources in tourist attractions. The objectives of this study were to assess cigarette smoking knowledge and attitude among smokers and non-smokers using validated scales in the Lebanese general population and evaluate their association with current cigarette smoking; a secondary objective is to assess the dose effect relationship of knowledge and attitude with cumulative smoking. This cross-sectional took place between May and December 2018, and enrolled a sample of 2623 participants, representative from all Lebanese governorates. A questionnaire about knowledge of the harmful effects of tobacco and attitude toward smoking bans retrieved from other studies was used to collect data. Male gender (ORa = 0.75), having a low monthly income (ORa = 1.56) and a higher passive smoking score (ORa = 1.25), were significantly associated with higher odds of being current smokers. Higher knowledge score (ORa = 0.97) and positive attitude toward smoking ban score (ORa = 0.94) were significantly associated with lower odds of being current smokers. In addition, increased age (ß = 15.21) and higher passive smoking score (ß = 26.58) were significantly associated with higher cumulative cigarette smoking. More positive attitude toward smoking ban score (ß = - 6.51) and having a university degree (ß = - 68.35) were significantly associated with lower cumulative cigarette smoking. Higher knowledge about the smoking-related health problems and better attitudes toward smoking ban were observed among non-smokers compared to smokers.
