Learning is one of the key processes to acquire information about the environment and adapt to changing and uncertain conditions. Learning has long been acknowledged in animals from invertebrates to vertebrates but remains a subject of debate in non-animal systems such a plants and single cell organisms. In this review I will attempt to answer the following question are single cell organisms capable of learning? I will first briefly discuss the concept of learning and argue that the ability to acquire and store information through learning is pervasive and may be found in single cell organisms. Second, by focusing on habituation, the simplest form of learning, I will review a series of experiments showing that single cell organisms such as slime molds and ciliates display habituation and follow most of the criteria adopted by neuroscientists to define habituation. Then I will discuss disputed evidence suggesting that single cell organisms might also undergo more sophisticated forms of learning such as associative learning. Finally, I will stress out that the challenge for the future is less about whether or not to single cell organisms fulfill the definition of learning established from extensive studies in animal systems and more about acknowledging and understanding the range of behavioral plasticity exhibited by such fascinating organisms.
Little is known about the survival outcomes of and predictive factors for survival in hemodialysis patients undergoing surgery for gastric cancer.
We performed a multicenter retrospective study from 9 institutions to investigate the survival outcomes of 75 hemodialysis patients with gastric cancer. Patient characteristics included demographic data, hemodialysis- and gastric cancer-related variables. Multivariate Cox hazards models were applied to determine independent predictors of poor overall survival and non-gastric cancer related death.
Stage I disease was predominant (58.7%) in our series. The overall morbidity and the 30-day mortality rates were 25.3% and 1.3%, respectively. The 5-year overall survival rates of patients with pStages I, II, III, and IV disease were 59.2%, 42.9%, 32.3%, and 0%, respectively. Eleven (14.7%) patients died of gastric cancer, whereas many more (40.0%) died owing to causes other than gastric cancer. Non-gastric cancer-related death was especially prevalent in patients wiic cancer-related death. Since the implementation in 2018 of the DUSP in the microbiology services of the Galician Health Service hospitals (SERGAS), new diagnoses of active HCV infection have been retrospectively identified and characterized.
In 2018, a total of 258 patients with unknown active HCV infection (70,2% men, middle age 52 years) were identified through by reflex testing from consultations of primary and specialized care units in 54.8% and 39.8% respectively, as well as from other locations by 5.4%. Of the 258 patients, 81.0% were referred for therapeutic evaluation, with a median of 54 days from their diagnosis. In 58.3% of the cases the reflex testing was determined by viral load, the predominant genotype was 1a (30,7%) and 52,1% were treated, observing sustained viral response in 93.7% of these.

The etiological factors of colorectal cancer (CRC) are not precisely known, although genetic and environmental factors have been implicated. A possible association with Fusobacterium nucleatum may provide opportunities for an early diagnosis.
To review studies that address the association between F. nucleatum and CRC.
The MEDLINE PubMed database was searched using the terms «colorectal cancer» and «Fusobacterium nucleatum», retrieving publications published up to January 1 2020. Stata software was used for a meta-analysis.
The systematic review included 57 articles. Meta-analysis results indicated a more frequent presence of F. nucleatum in CRC tumor tissue samples in comparison to control samples of healthy tissue, with an odds ratio of 4.558 (95% CI 3.312-6.272), and in comparison, to control samples of colorectal adenomas, with an odds ratio of 3.244 (95% CI 2.359-4.462).

However, the delivery of protein drugs into the body is challenging. In this review, we summarize and highlight progress in developing affinity hydrogels (i.e., hydrogels functionalized with protein-bound ligands) for controlled protein release. Contrary to traditional hydrogels, which release proteins mainly through diffusion, affinity hydrogels stably retain and sustainably release proteins based mainly on diffusion coupled with a binding reaction. These hydrogels can also be modulated to release proteins in response to defined molecules in a triggered manner. Future research efforts may focus on the development of intelligent affinity hydrogels to mimic the properties of human tissues in sensing different environmental stimuli for on-demand release of single or multiple proteins (i.e., biomimetic intelligence for protein delivery).The study aimed to correlate between the stimulated nerve, intensity of trigeminovagal reflex (TVR), and neuropathophysiological pathway by which the efferent arc is activated. Material and methods A retrospective study included patients who developed TVR during the surgical management of mandibular, midface, and orbital fractures. The reflex was divided into type I, II, III, and IV-TVR according to the following nerves ophthalmic, maxillary, mandibular, and non-trigeminal nerves, respectively. The magnitude of hemodynamic drops was identified at the intraoperative baseline, during reflex, and postoperatively. The needed time to elicit the reflex, frequency and duration, need for medical intervention, and sequence of the drop were also recorded. P - values less then 0.05 was considered significant. Out of 260 patients' files were reviewed, the TVR was observed in only 30 (11.55 %) patients. However, subgroup analysis revealed that vitamin E supplementation in studies conducted on participants with normal BMI (18.5-24.9) had increasing impact on BMI (P=0.047).
