Methods Positive mood in 7- to 9-year olds was induced experimentally and risk taking intentions and behaviors were measured when the child was in a positive and neutral mood state and after they had been exposed to either a safety or neutral peer-communicated social norm message. A few weeks later, half of the participants who experienced the safety social norm message were exposed to a reminder of this message via a slogan and risk-taking measures were taken again when in a heightened positive mood state. Results Exposure to a safety norm successfully counteracted the increase in risk taking associated with a positive mood state. These effects persisted for several weeks regardless of whether the children were exposed to a reminder. Conclusion Manipulating peer social norms holds promise as an approach to produce reductions in children's risk taking and these effects persist at least over several weeks.Introduction While surgical treatment is preferred for Graves' disease with active forms of GO, there are various concepts for treating inactive forms of GO. The goal of radioiodine therapy is to resolve immunogenic hyperthyroidism by damaging the thyroid cells.The effects of the radioiodine dose on an associated inactive GO remain unclear, however. Methodology We conducted a retrospective analysis of 536 patients who received first-time radioiodine therapy to treat Graves' hyperthyroidism. Patients without GO always received 200 Gy of iodine-131. Before the introduction of a differentiated treatment concept, patients with GO also received 200 Gy, while afterwards they received 300 Gy. For further analysis, we formed three patient groups based on GO diagnosis and administered radiation dose and compared their results. The main research question focused on the effect of an increased dose on Graves' orbitopathy. The sub-questions addressed the resolution rate achieved with the higher dose as well as the development of GO in patients who received radioiodine therapy. Results The results show that GO symptoms were improved after radioiodine treatment in 68.5 % of patients treated with 300 Gy but only in 47.5 % of the patients treated with 200 Gy (p = 0.003). While in the 300 Gy group, hyperthyroidism was resolved in 93.2 % of patients, this was achieved in only 68.8 % of patients in the 200 Gy group (p less then /= 0.001). Discussion Especially with an inactive form of GO profit from their hyperthyroidism being quickly and sufficiently resolved. This is achieved significantly better by administering 300 Gy instead of 200 Gy. For this reason, data analysis supports a differentiated dose concept that provides 300 Gy for patients with GO and 200 Gy for patients without GO.Volume averaged CT dose index (CTDIvol) is an important dose index utilized for CT dosimetry. Measurements of CTDIvol are performed in reference cylindrical phantoms of specified diameters. A size-specific dose estimate (SSDE) has been recommended for assessment of doses delivered to individual patients. Evaluation of the SSDE requires the size of the scanned region of the patient to be estimated in terms of water-equivalent diameter (Dw) to allow calculation of a dose value appropriate for the patient. Estimation of Dw, however, may be challenging and time consuming as it requires assessment of Dw for each slice within the scanned region. A study has been carried out to investigate the suitability of using Dw,mid for a single slice at the middle of the scanned region to estimate a value of Dw,mean to apply to all slices. 351 phantoms (158 paediatric and 193 adult) developed from reconstructed CT images of patients were employed. Six scan regions were studied chest, abdomen, pelvis, chest and abdomen, abdomen and pelvis, and the whole trunk. Results show that the use of Dw,mid can lead to over or underestimation of Dw,mean by up to 13% for paediatric and adult patients. SSDE values based on Dw,mid and Dw,mean were assessed for each phantom, and a linear regression analysis was performed. Use of the analysis could provide a simple and practical approach to assessing SSDE for a given scan based on Dw,mid with the root-mean-square errors estimated to be in the range of 1.2%-4.0% for paediatric and 1.2%-5.9% for adults.Background and objective Identification of subgroups may be useful to understand the clinical characteristics of ICU patients. The purposes of this study were to apply an unsupervised machine learning method to ICU patient data to discover subgroups among them; and to examine their clinical characteristics, therapeutic procedures conducted during the ICU stay, and discharge dispositions. Methods K-means clustering method was used with 1503 observations and 9 types of laboratory test results as features. Results Three clusters were identified from this specific population. Blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, potassium, hemoglobin, and red blood cell were distinctive between the clusters. Cluster Three presented the highest blood products transfusion rate (19.8%), followed by Cluster One (15.5%) and cluster Two (9.3%), which was significantly different. Hemodialysis was more frequently provided to Cluster Three while bronchoscopy was done to Cluster One and Two. Cluster Three showed the highest mortality (30.4%), which was more than two-fold compared to Cluster One (14.1%) and Two (12.2%). Conclusion Three subgroups were identified and their clinical characteristics were compared. These findings may be useful to anticipate treatment strategies and probable outcomes of ICU patients. However, we seldom have empirical studies that provide spatio-temporally explicit information on the main drivers among these factors that determine regional groundwater change. This research explored a spatio-temporally explicit understanding on the socio-ecological determinants on the changes of groundwater storage in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) of north China. We selected this basin because the spatial heterogeneity of this basin complicates the relationship between socio-ecological factors and groundwater resources, whose changes would in turn fundamentally affect the socio-ecological system in the YRB. We collected annual (time resolution) data between 2003 and 2016 (time scope) with 1° × 1° grid (space resolution) about 18 social-ecological factors that might affect groundwater storage change in the YRB (space scope). Using this data and groundwater storage information from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment database, we determined best predictors, highly-performed predictive models, and dominant drivers for temporal and spatial changes of groundwater storage. Temporal changes of groundwater in the YRB between 2003 and 2016 were mainly contributed by anthropogenic factors, including population density, plantation, and irrigation water consumption over time. The spatial groundwater change across the YRB was determined by both the geographical location (e.g. indicated by longitude) and urbanization level (e.g. indicated by the domestic and industrial water consumption). The knowledge about socio-ecological determinants on groundwater dynamics in space and time in the YRB can help determine main levers to control regional change of groundwater storage and assist in a sustainable use of groundwater resource.Background Genotypes associated with venous thromboembolism (VTE) may protect against bleeding due to a hypercoagulable state. Whether the risk of major bleeding is reduced in parallel with an increasing number of prothrombotic genotypes during anticoagulant treatment in VTE remains unknown. Objectives To investigate the association between multiple prothrombotic genotypes and risk of major bleeding in patients with VTE. Methods Patients with incident VTE (n = 676) derived from the Tromsø Study were genotyped for rs6025 (F5), rs1799963 (F2), rs8176719 (ABO), rs2066865 (FGG) and rs2036914 (F11) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Major bleeding events were recorded during the first year after VTE according to the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis criteria. Cox-regression was used to calculate hazard ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for major bleeding adjusted for age, sex and duration of anticoagulation according to individual prothrombotic SNPs and categories of risk alleles (5-SNP score; 0-1, 2, 3 and ≥4). Results In total, 50 patients experienced major bleeding (incidence rate 9.5/100 person-years, 95% CI 7.2-12.5). The individual SNPs and number of risk alleles were not associated with major bleeding risk. The hazard ratios for major bleeding per category increase of genetic risk score were 1.0 (95% CI 0.8-1.3) for the total study population and 1.1 (95% CI 0.8-1.5) when patients with active cancer were excluded. Analyses restricted to the first 3 months after VTE yielded similar results. Conclusion Our findings suggest that an increasing number of prothrombotic risk alleles is not protective against major bleeding in VTE patients during anticoagulation.This commentary addresses volume replacement in hyperglycemic crises in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). This work is an effort to provide an improved new class of organofluorine pesticides.Proteins of all living cells undergo a myriad of post-translational modifications (PTMs) that are critical to multifarious life processes. In this study, we describe the first comprehensive multiple PTM-omics atlas in parallel with quantitative proteome analyses of two representative species of African trypanosomes, Trypanosoma brucei and Trypanosoma evansi. Ten PTM types with approximately 40,000 modified sites and 150 histone marks with a fine map on each protein of the two African trypanosomes were accomplished. The two biologically different trypanosomal species displayed distinct PTM-omic features, regulation pathways, and networks. Modifications in the proteins involved in the redox system were mainly upregulated in T. brucei, whereas proteins associated with motility were predominantly modified in T. evansi. The establishment of a database of multiple PTMs in the two parasites provides us with a deep insight into the biological mechanisms that underpin life processes in trypanosomes with different life cycles.
