It is generally accepted that mitochondrial Ca2+ controls the pace of mitochondrial bioenergetics and thus ATP production. Szibor et al. challenge this paradigm, proposing that the balance between ATP consumption and production depends on mitochondrial pyruvate supply via the malate-aspartate shuttle (MAS) and is controlled by cytosolic Ca2+.Objectives Opioid overdose death rates have continued to spike exponentially from the start of the 21st century, creating what is known to be one of the worst public health crises in the United States. Simultaneously, as more states began passing medical cannabis laws (MCLs), the idea that marijuana was the solution to the opioid crisis began to spread nationwide. As some states have maintained strict medical marijuana policies, others-such as Colorado-have expanded their statutes to allow recreational marijuana sales within their state. Researchers have been able to provide sense of the public health implications resulting from MCLs, but little is known about the effects of this marijuana policy expansion. This preliminary study will focus on exploring the statewide effects of Colorado's recreational marijuana policy on the state's opioid overdose death rates. Study design Because Colorado has existing panel data for opioid overdose death rates, we can use statistical software to define and create an optimalwill be conducted to evaluate the method's predictive power and significance of the results. Results The results of the synthetic control model and its outcomes showed that the estimated negative 5% drop in overdose death rates was deemed insignificant on conducting a placebo in-space analysis, meaning there is not enough evidence to prove that opening recreational dispensaries as a result of recreational marijuana legislation was instrumental in reducing Colorado's ongoing opioid crisis depicted through opioid overdose deaths. Conclusion Owing to the lack of additional post-treatment data and captured lagged effects, it is too soon to dismiss this policy as inadequate in combating the opioid epidemic. In the absence of vaccine and proven specific safe and effective treatments, the experience and results achieved by Wuhan could serve as a good reference for leaders and policymakers around the world in formulating their strategies and policies in fighting against COVID-19.Reverse Osmosis (RO) desalination is an important step of wastewater reuse as it can remove salts and trace contaminants. However, RO also generates high salinity brines that need to be dealt with. Membrane distillation (MD), a process largely unaffected by salinity, provides a way to treat desalination brines up to high water recovery and has been proposed as a solution for RO brine management. However, pore wetting of membranes in MD is one of the major hurdles that prevents its implementation in wastewater treatment systems, as amphiphilic organic compounds present in wastewater can lead to pore wetting and loss of selectivity over time. The objective of this study was to identify a pre-treatment strategy to prevent wetting in MD treatment of municipal wastewater RO brines. We compared three pre-treatments with different separation or removal mechanisms foam fractionation, advanced oxidation, and ultrafiltration. We evaluated membrane wetting by measuring the change in conductivity in the distillate and identified the most effective pre-treatment to prevent wetting in MD. The results show that wetting is prevented by pre-treating the brine with foam fractionation. The effectiveness of foam fractionation as a wetting control strategy was confirmed for a high wetting propensity synthetic water using sodium dodecyl sulfate as a model wetting compound. Finally, the effect of the pre-treatments on the desalination brine was evaluated to understand the nature of the compounds removed by each treatment. The results of this study will help implement MD as a treatment process for desalination brines in municipal wastewater reuse systems.Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in ambient particulate matter contribute considerably to human health risk. Simultaneous sampling of ambient PM2.5/PM10 was done to analyze the Ʃ16PAH across the four seasons of 2017 in Islamabad, Pakistan. The average Ʃ16PAH concentrations in PM2.5 and PM10 were 25.69 and 40.69 ng m-3, respectively. For both PM2.5 and PM10, the highest PAHs concentration was in winter (45.14, 67.10 ng m-3), while the lowest was in summer (16.40, 28.18 ng m-3). Source appointment indicated that vehicular exhaust, i.e., diesel, gasoline and alternatively fuel liquid natural gas (LNG), and compressed natural gas (CNG) combustion was the primary PAHs contributor, whereas biomass burning and fuel combustion (coal, biomass, wood, CNG) from stationary sources were another important sources. Health risk assessment showed that the lifetime cancer risk (LCR) values of PAHs were higher than the acceptable level in all four seasons. LCR values were the highest in winter (9.23 × 10-4 for PAHs in PM2.5 and 13.98 × 10-4 for PAHs in PM10) which were 9 and 13 times higher than tolerable cancer risk level respectively, and they were 2-3 times higher than the acceptable values in other seasons. It is a central issue to improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers and the utilization of visible light in the field of photocatalysis. Herein, taking MIL-125(Ti) as a host material, the Pt/MIL-125(Ti) was first prepared by solvothermal method to build the interface of Schottky junction. Ag was then introduced onto the surface of Pt/MIL-125(Ti) to form the interface with the surface plasmon resonance effect. These double interfaces in the composite play a synergistic role on the photodagradation. The morphology, crystallinity and photochemical properties of the material were tested. By comparison, Pt/MIL-125(Ti)/Ag (4 wt% Ag) exhibited the best performance in the photodegradation of ketoprofen (KP, 10 mg/L) and the degradation process conformed to the pseudo-first-order kinetics. The photodegradation rate is 0.0253 min-1, which was higher than MIL-125(Ti) (0.0009 min-1). The TOC removal efficiency of KP reached approximately 51.5%. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and free radical capture tests verified that h+ and ·OH played the prominent roles during the reaction system.
