A visible light mediated stereospecific C(sp2)-H difluoroalkylation of (Z)-aldoximes to (E)-difluoroalkylated ketoximes has been described. In this reaction, (hetero)-aromatic and aliphatic difluoroalkylated ketoximes could be obtained with the retention of the configuration of the starting aldoximes. A preliminary mechanism study showed that a difluoromethyl radical via an SET pathway was involved.Silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) can be challenging to prepare with defined size, crystallinity, composition, and surface chemistry. As is the case for any nanomaterial, controlling these parameters is essential if SiNPs are to realize their full potential in areas such as alternative energy generation and storage, sensors, and medical imaging. Numerous teams have explored and established innovative synthesis methods, as well as surface functionalization protocols to control these factors. Furthermore, substantial effort has been expended to understand how the abovementioned parameters influence material properties. In the present review we provide a commentary highlighting the benefits and limitations of available methods for preparing silicon nanoparticles as well as demonstrations of tailoring optical and electronic properties through definition of structure (i.e., crystalline vs. amorphous), composition and surface chemistry. Finally, we highlight potential opportunities for future SiNP studies.Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of cardiovascular diseases worldwide. Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a metabolite of intestinal flora from dietary quaternary amines, has been shown to be closely related to the development of atherosclerosis. Previous studies have shown that Enterobacter aerogenes ZDY01 significantly reduces the serum levels of TMAO and cecal trimethylamine (TMA) in Balb/c mice; however, its role in the inhibition of choline-induced atherosclerosis in ApoE-/- mice remains unclear. Telotristat Etiprate Here, we demonstrated that E. aerogenes ZDY01 inhibited choline-induced atherosclerosis in ApoE-/- mice fed with 1.3% choline by reducing cecal TMA and modulating CDCA-FXR/FGF15 axis. We observed that E. aerogenes ZDY01 decreased the cecal TMA and serum TMAO levels by utilizing cecal TMA as a nutrient, not by changing the expression of hepatic FMO3 and the composition of gut microbiota. Furthermore, E. aerogenes ZDY01 enhanced the expression of bile acid transporters and reduced the cecal CDCA levels, thereby attenuating the FXR/FGF15 pathway, upregulating the expression of Cyp7a1, promoting reverse cholesterol transport. Taken together, E. aerogenes ZDY01 attenuated choline-induced atherosclerosis in ApoE-/- mice by decreasing cecal TMA and promoting reverse cholesterol transport, implying that E. aerogenes ZDY01 treatment might have therapeutic potential in atherosclerosis.Theaflavins (TFs) are the characteristic components of black tea and have been widely acknowledged for their health benefits. The current study aimed to investigate the effects and mechanism of TFs, TF1, TF2a and TF3 on glycolipid metabolism in obese mice induced by a high-fat diet (HFD). Mice were randomly divided into seven groups (n = 8 per group) as follows low-fat diet (LFD), HFD, HFD + metformin (Met, 100 mg kg-1 d-1), HFD + TFs (TFs, 200 mg kg-1 d-1), HFD + TF1 (TF1, 100 mg kg-1 d-1), HFD + TF2a (TF2a, 100 mg kg-1 d-1), and HFD + TF3 (TF3, 100 mg kg-1 d-1). All groups were studied for 9 weeks continuously. The levels of serum glucose, insulin, TC, TG, LDL and HLD in the plasma, lipid accumulation in the liver, and injury of the liver were investigated. In addition, the effects of TFs and their monomers on the SIRT6/AMPK/SREBP-1/FASN pathway were also evaluated. The results showed that oral administration of TFs, TF1, TF2a and TF3 not only dramatically suppressed weight gain, reduced blood glucose leveland ameliorating obesity, and TF3 may be the best choice.Oxazole-type fluorophores show an increase of fluorescence intensity upon interaction with nucleic acids, and therefore can be used as tools for nucleic acid-sensing and fluorescence imaging. Here, we developed a novel stilbene-type fluorophore, MO-VN (1), consisting of a mono oxazole bearing a vinyl naphthalene moiety. This compound (1) was embedded in a trioxazole 2 and a cyclic hexaoxazole 3a. The fluorescence properties of 1, 2, and 3a were evaluated in the presence of various nucleic acid sequences. Compound 3 showed significant fluorescent enhancement upon interacting with G-quadruplex (G4) structure, which plays critical roles in various biological phenomena. Further structural development focusing on the vinyl naphthalene moiety of 3a afforded a turn-on type G4 ligand 3e that shows G4-specific fluorescence. Measurement of the fluorescence of 3e during titration of a telomeric DNA, telo24, with its C-rich complementary sequence, which unwinds the G4 structure, allowed us to monitor the dynamics of G4.This paper reports a study involving the formation of a self-assembled polymeric monolayer on the surface of a high surface area activated carbon to engineer its affinity towards organic contaminants. A nanoporous activated carbon cloth with a surface area of ∼1220 m2 g-1 and a pore volume of ∼0.42 cm3 g-1 was produced by chemical impregnation, carbonisation and high-temperature CO2 activation of a commercially available viscose rayon cloth. The subsequent modification with a silane polymer resulted in a nanoscale self-assembled monolayer that made it selective towards organic solvents (contact angle 92% oil removal efficiency. The adsorbent was studied extensively with a series of advanced characterisation techniques to establish the formation mechanism and performance in emulsion separation. Findings from this work provide crucial insights towards large-scale implementation of surface engineered activated carbon-based materials for a wide range of industrial separation applications.Fe3O4-SiO2 microspheres were synthesized by a three-step synthetic procedure involving silica coating, surface capping, and surface modification. These magnetic mesoporous microspheres were employed as sorbents for the incorporation of ultrasmall Ru nanoparticles (2-5 nm) followed by thermal aggregation of the microspheres for achieving better heterogeneity and low leaching. The Ru decorated Fe3O4-SiO2 microspheres (Ru@Fe3O4-CSM) were applied as chemoselective catalysts to convert more than 20 substituted nitroarenes to corresponding amines with good-to-excellent conversion (77-99%) and selectivity (70-100%) under mild conditions; the catalyst can be magnetically recovered within a frame of 90s (recovery time-lapse) and reused up to 5 times without significant decrease in activity or selectivity. Magnetic hysteresis studies were performed to elucidate the magnetic behavior of the ruthenium decorated materials.Germanium-based materials attract more interest as anodes for lithium-ion batteries, stemming from their physical and chemical advantages. However, these materials inevitably undergo capacity attenuation caused by significant volumetric variation in repeated electrochemical processes. Herein, we designed 3D porous Ge/N-doped carbon nanocomposites by the encapsulation of 3D porous Ge in a nitrogen-doped carbon matrix (denoted as 3D porous Ge/NC). link2 The 3D porous structure can accommodate the volume change during alloying/dealloying processes and improve the penetration of the electrolyte. Furthermore, the doping of N in the carbon framework could introduce more defects and active sites, which can also contribute to electron transportation and lithium-ion diffusion. The half-cell test found that at a current density of 1 C (1 C = 1600 mA h g-1), the specific capacity stabilized at 917.9 mA h g-1 after 800 cycles; and the specific capacity remained at 542.4 mA h g-1 at 10 C. When assembled into a 3D porous Ge/NC//LiFePO4 full cell, the specific capacity was stabilized at 101.3 mA h g-1 for 100 cycles at a current density of 1 C (1 C = 170 mA h g-1), and the cycle specific capacity was maintained at 72.6 mA h g-1 at a high current density of 5 C. This work develops a low-cost, scalable and simple strategy to improve the electrochemical performance of these alloying type anode materials with huge volume change in the energy storage area.Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a technique that demonstrates a number of advantages for the rapid, specific and sensitive detection of pathogenic microorganisms. link3 In this review, an overview of label-free and label-based SERS approaches, including microfluidics, nucleic acid detection and immunoassays, for the multiplexed detection of pathogenic bacteria and viruses from the last decade will be discussed, as well as their transition into promising point-of-use detection technologies in industrial and medical settings.
Injurious falls remain among the most common, dangerous, and costly adverse events in hospitals, despite the widespread implementation of fall prevention programs. Many current health care system policies and nursing practices oversimplify fall prevention by focusing on limiting the person's mobility and making the environment safer, or simply documenting a fall risk score. But most falls are caused by factors intrinsic to that individual; merely limiting their mobility can increase preventable hospital complications and readmissions, and still leaves them at risk for falls. This article proposes a new approach to reducing injurious falls in older adults-one grounded in evidence-based protocols known to positively impact the health of older adults. The approach, called by the acronym ERA-Electronic health record integration, Risk factors that matter, Assessment and care plans-allows nurses to use a validated fall risk assessment tool to reframe fall risk factors as part of the comprehensive care plan, and tcols known to positively impact the health of older adults. The approach, called by the acronym ERA-Electronic health record integration, Risk factors that matter, Assessment and care plans-allows nurses to use a validated fall risk assessment tool to reframe fall risk factors as part of the comprehensive care plan, and to map modifiable risk factors to interventions that address the underlying causes of falls and promote safer mobility. The ERA approach can help nurses use their time more effectively by focusing on targeted actions that improve patient outcomes, working in coordination with an interprofessional, cross-continuum care team.
Stroke, the most common form of cerebrovascular disease, is a leading cause of death and disability throughout the world. There have been no significant advances in the development of effective therapeutics for hemorrhagic stroke, and for ischemic stroke highly effective, evidence-based therapies such as alteplase and mechanical thrombectomy are widely underutilized. Improving outcomes for patients experiencing ischemic stroke requires faster recognition and appropriate intervention within the treatment window (the first 24 hours after symptom onset). This article discusses the pathophysiology underlying the various types of ischemic stroke; the risk factors for ischemic stroke; stroke presentation; and the evidence-based treatments, nursing assessments, and monitoring protocols that are critical to patient recovery.
