To investigate the role of a microbial consortium in influencing of Camellia sinensis growth and rhizosphere bacteria microbial community structure.

Based on glasshouse trials, the microbial consortium TCM was selected for a field trial. TCM significantly increased bud density (67·53%), leaf area (31·15%) and hundred-bud weight (22·5%) compared with the control treatment (P<0·01) during 180days. Furthermore, TCM-treated soil showed a significant increase (P<0·05) in organic matter (60·89%), total nitrogen (66·22%), total phosphorus (3·34%), available phosphorus (3·82%), available potassium (9·24%) and 2-3mm water-stable aggregates (77·93%). Molecular ecological network analysis of the rhizobacteria indicated an increase in modularity and the number of community, connection and nodes after TCM application. Several plant growth-promoting bacteria were categorized as hubs or indicators, such as Haliangium, Catenulispora and Gemmatimonas, and showed intensive connections with other bacteria.

The TCM consortium enhances the effectiveness of soil mineral nutrition, influences the indigenous rhizobacterial community, alters the rhizobacterial network structure in the rhizosphere and promotes the growth of C. sinensis.

The TCM growth-promoting mechanism was closely related to rhizosphere bacterial diversity; therefore, strengthening rhizobacterial interactions may help promote C. sinensis growth, which could be a sustainable approach for improving C. sinensis growth and health in tea plantations.

Data from the UK transplant registry were used to describe kidney donation and transplant activity in the UK, and a detailed analysis of short-term, single-center, patient results in two periods during the pre-pandemic era from 30th December 2019 to 8th March 2020 ("Pre-COVID era") and the 9th March 2020 to 19th May 2020 ("COVID era"). Marine systems are often suggested to support larger and more highly connected populations, but quantitative comparisons with terrestrial systems have been lacking. Here, we compared the population histories of marine and terrestrial elapid snakes using the pairwise sequentially Markovian coalescent (PSMC) model to track historical fluctuations in species' effective population sizes (Ne ) from individual whole-genome sequences. To do this we generated a draft genome for the olive sea snake (Aiysurus laevis) and analysed this alongside six published elapid genomes and their sequence reads (marine species Hydrophis curtus, H. melanocephalus and Laticauda laticaudata; terrestrial species Pseudonaja textilis, Naja Naja and Notechis scutatus). link3 Counter to the expectation that marine species should show higher overall Ne and less pronounced fluctuations in Ne , our analyses reveal demographic patterns that are highly variable among species and do not clearly correspond to major ecological divisions. At deeper time intervals, the four marine elapids appear to have experienced relatively stable Ne , while each terrestrial species shows a prominent upturn in Ne starting at ~4 million years ago (Ma) followed by an equally strong decline. However, over the last million years, all seven species show strong and divergent fluctuations. Estimates of Ne in the most recent intervals (~10 kya) are lowest in two of four marine species (H. melanocephalus and Laticauda), and do not correspond to contemporary range sizes in marine or terrestrial taxa.
Adding perfusion index (PI) to pulse oximetry screening (POS) may increase neonatal detection of CoA (aortic coarctation). A cut-off <0.7% has been suggested but is associated with a high rate of false positives. We aimed to evaluate the specificity of PI when using repeated instead of single measurements.

A pilot study was conducted in 50 neonates. PI was recorded in right hand and a foot by pulse oximeter. If PI was <0.7%, the measurement was immediately repeated up to 3 times. If all three measurements were <0.7% in hand and/or foot the screen was positive and echocardiography was performed. There were 3/50 false positive screens. The protocol was therefore modified requiring 30 minutes intervals between measurements.

An additional 463 neonates were included using the modified protocol at a median age of 18 hours. There were no false positives. The only neonate with CoA had a negative screen (PI hand 1.2% and foot 0.8%). The measurement required on average an extra 3 minutes and 30 seconds compared to POS only.

The false positive rate of PI was reduced by using repeated PI-measurements. The sensitivity for CoA using this protocol should be evaluated in large-scale prospective studies.

The ecological processes that contribute to the "perfect storm" of conditions that create environmental injustices are well documented in applied ecology scholarship; yet the human dimension or the co-production of research on those impacts seem to fall into the range of "somebody else's problem." In a literature review of the last 15 years of research published in the Ecological Society of America's family of journals, we explored the intersections of environmental processes and social justice issues, searching for themes, gaps, and opportunities. The resultant is a collection of articles on environmental justice topics that includes issues on access to resources and unequal exposure to environmental hazards and pollutants. In this study, cultured hippocampal neurons treated with NMDA or dexamethasone showed an increased of DNA methyltransferase 3b (DNMT3b) mRNA expression, which was blocked by pre-treatment with nNOS inhibitor nω -propyl-l-arginine (NPA). In rats submitted to the Learned Helplessness paradigm (LH), we observed that inescapable stress increased DNMT3b mRNA expression at 1h and 24h in the hippocampus. The NOS inhibitors 7-NI and aminoguanidine (AMG) decreased the number of escape failures in LH and counteracted the changes in hippocampal DNMT3b mRNA induced in this behavioral paradigm.
